My Master's Accomplishments

One of the greatest personal achievements in my life is earning a college degree. Being the first one in my family to attend and graduate from college was already an unexpected accomplishment. I started my academic journey as a non-traditional student. Being the mother of six children, I waited until my youngest child entered school full-time before I enrolled myself in college. I was 38 and I found myself sitting among teenagers that had just finished their high school education. This was the beginning of a journey that has fundamentally changed my life and the life of my children. I now have completed a master’s degree.
As an undergraduate at The University of Texas at Brownsville, I double majored in Sociology and Psychology (BA) and complete an associates (AA) in Social Work. As a graduate student, I completed a Master’s of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies (M.A.I.S.) with an emphasis in Sociology, Psychology and Public Policy. Your program is the perfect fit to help me attain the theoretical foundation and skills necessary to become a successful rehabilitation counselor and assist and empower persons who have been affected by a disability. I then will like to apply these skills and knowledge and expand the body of literature regarding the use of animals in rehabilitation counseling. There is an abundance of research from a wide range of disciplines that offer evidence on the interactions with animals and the positive effects on overall health, psychosocial well-being and recovery of individuals that are faced with a disability. I will like to develop academic courses to teach others about this fast growing, and fascinating side of rehabilitation
