Every time I drive through streets of Washington DC, I see the homeless people sleeping on the side walk, benches, and stairs ways. I always wonder what can cause someone to end up like this? The most likely reason that comes to my mind that lead to this situation is not having a purpose in life. I believe having a purpose in life is the fuel of motivation to do anything, without it there is no reason to try. Today I have a wife, a house, and a decent fulltime job; which five years ago I wouldn’t even see in my dreams.
My decline started when I migrated to United State with my family. I was a conservative religious person raised in a religious family who always followed the faith. During my migration to US my family went through severe harsh
It can be very challenging to move away from the country you grew up in. Recalling all those moments of laughter, excitement, and adventure can only make one more and more depressed. I was born in Port-Au -Prince, which is the capital of Haiti and raised in Gonaives. I spend most of my early childhood in Haiti. I only knew my native language, food, music, and history. I was only familiar with my native holidays and celebration. Therefore, the day my mother came to me and told me I had been awarded my resident card, and we had to move to America. My life changed forever.
Imagine what it would be like not knowing what to do or not knowing where to sleep for the night. There is no where to go and once again sleeping outside on the cold, hard ground is the only choice. This ground becomes a bed and some nights it may be located under a bridge or even on a park bench. The smells that linger from other homeless people sleeping close by is nauseating but soon goes away because it becomes a way of life. Hunger has set in and begging people for food is the only option. People in society tend to label the homeless as alcoholics or drug abusers. The homeless people who choose to do such things set a bad example for homeless individuals
I was all packed and ready for the journey. I was very frightened, because I was leaving the only place I knew. My family was not coming with me and I missed them. I was riding a stinky old steamboat to America. I was not excited for the long journey to America. The food smelled bad and I was uncomfortable, but I was going to America so I tried to keep my thoughts on that. At least I was waking up to a better life in America.
My mom immigrated from India to America in her adolescence and later was the first in our family to attend college and get a degree. I want to follow in her footsteps and go and get a college education and prove to her that I did not take all the back-breaking hours of work that both my mom and dad put in for granted, and to prove that I am willing to work hard. My parents both came to America with a couple dollars and a dream, and they were able to provide for me with little outside help. I am fortunate for this situation, and many, like me, have not had such lucky childhoods, and this has shaped my aspirations and goals in life. I want to go into the medical field in order to one day help other people. I want to make a living out of helping
Hi, I’m Anna Sophia Wager and I am from Germany. I immigrated to the United States in 1908. There was a big drought and my mother and father were very ill. I was helping my parents and my other family. One day, my father pulled me aside after school. I was a teacher at Berlin British School. He talked very softly. “Anna Sophia,” My father said, “Here is a ticket to Americana. Go and find Ben.” Ben was my older brother. My parents gave him a ticket to the United States. I looked at the ticket. It was a ticket that was golden brown. I gave my father a hug and ran to my room. I started packing, I didn’t know what was ahead of me. It was finally my third week on the crowded boat. When I look own the steerage door I see the dirty faces, hard lumpy beds, and chunky slimy soup.
This novel has only increased the knowledge I have already for the immigrants that migrant to this country. All of the sacrifices humans make day in and day out to make sure their families are in a better place than their homeland. I also went through a similar experience as the Garcia sisters. Living a wonderful life in my homeland of Honduras, parents were both college graduates working in their respected professions. Oppressed by the struggles of living a life where we feared every time we stepped out of our homes. Having been kidnapped and told there would be no tomorrow unless your family pays up the ransom. Brought us to the United States of America. Living a totally different lifestyle, unlike many went from having so much to struggling to make ends meet. Fights after school with kids trying to bully me and just trying to adjust to the new surroundings. Their story definitely hits home a hard way for me.
There are many factors that push people into living on the street. Impairments such as depression, mental illness, and physical disabilities are also responsible for a large portion of the homeless. For people who are already living in poverty, everyday life issues can lead to homelessness. Things like a broken down car, lack of insurance, unpaid fines, or even speeding tickets can lead to homelessness. Other things like serious illness or a disabling accident can push people out of their homes. Natural disasters can also destroy homes and lead to people living on the street. Since I have been researching homelessness, I am totally convinced that laziness is not one of the major reasons leading to people living on the
lessness .org/pages/snapshot_of_homelessness). There are a variety of reasons people end up homeless. Some families cannot afford housing, some people are mentally ill and cannot provide for themselves, some people are unable to hold a job due to a disability, and the list goes on forever. This issue not only affects families and adults but children as well.
My story starts in the year of 2003, when I decided to follow up on my
There are several reasons people can become homeless. People go through life changing events that sometimes have severe and life-marking consequences. An important one can be the loss of a love one, or unexpected loss of a job. Also, domestic violence, a divorce, depression, mental illness, traumatic brain injuries, and even drugs and alcohol.
I came to the United State as an exchange student in 2012 when I turned sixteen. When I stepped off the plane in Detroit frantically looking around for the host family I had only seen in a small picture, it suddenly dawned on me that my life would be altered forever. Despite meticulous preparation, I was still bewildered by this exciting yet unfamiliar environment. For the first time in my life, I felt so helpless when I learned that I was the only Chinese student at school. Talking to someone in my own native language suddenly became a luxury.
What causes homelessness? There are many reasons why people become homeless. These reasons include poverty, disabilities (untreated mental illness), substance abuse/drugs, domestic violence, housing, gambling addictions, low income, destroyed homes (fires), and lose of jobs. Until recently, the attacks of September 11, 2001 has greatly impacted the homeless
I interview my father who arrive to the united states from Mexico The major problem that motive my father to migrate to the U.S.A were as he mention on pages (1-2) was an economically problem has he said since he was a child he grew up in a farm with his parents and brothers and sisters and had many struggles since the only one that work was his father. My grandfather did all he could to give him an education and a better life that he had that’s the same idea he view for me when he become a father he was young and money was like the priority to care for the necessary that a child has, but to get money you need to have a job. With salary he earned at my grandfather farm he knew was not enough to support himself and a child and he could
I was born in Mymensingh, Bangladesh in 1997. I was immigrated in Canada in 2010 with my mother. We moved in order to live with my father who is living in Canada since 2003. I'm currently 20 years old and I'm studying at Dawson College in General Social Science enrolled in Day Division section of Research Methods in Winter 2017. I love talking a lot, watching movies, listening to music, surfing in the Internet etc. I would love to travel to Japan and South Korea in the
The primary causes of chronic homelessness include poverty, disability, mental illness, along with substance abuse or addiction. Poverty is a challenging but is a doable cycle to break and becomes progressively difficult to get out once you begin to fall behind a specific income level. Once people reach that point they are then usually not able to obtain the proper resources for the acquired knowledge and resources that are necessary for a higher paying job. Disability affects an immense percentage of the homeless. This is frequently caused by an injury that prevents them from working numerous jobs within their societies and without their dependable
