I work in the place where people come to rehabilitate their lives after serious injuries. Many patients are there due to events that change their lives forever. Many of my patients are spinal cord injuries which left them paralyzed for life. This where two of my mission statements come from; To accept the things as they are, things that I have no power to change. To advocate for others when they can’t advocate for themselves. As any other organization, we have established organizational codes of ethics. Many of these codes Ferrell described are trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Values and ethics are essential in the workplace. It establishes how a company is run and remains profitable. Leaders are the key to demonstrating and creating the organization’s culture, ethics and values. It has to start at the top of the organization including the Chief Executive officer, board and owners. As a Director of Human Resources for a public organization, in writing a comprehensive Code of Ethics, I would define the following key areas regarding expected standard of employee behavior as especially important; 1. I need to learn to be a better and more fluent writer and I believe Composition 1 will teach me that. I am very bad with words and have a hard time getting my point across in any conversation/essay and that is not a good thing when applying for scholarships. ‘Which college will you be going to?’ you might ask me after reading this mission statement, and I can honestly say that I have absolutely no clue. In order to achieve all my goals to be overly content and successful throughout my life, I will rely on resources that cross my path to guide me to become the person I plan to be. When the path becomes difficult and my goals seem unclear as well as unachievable, I will reassure myself that no matter what I will find a solution and everything will work out in the end. Once I’ve accomplished my plans, all the hardships will fade and nothing will matter as long as I’ve made myself and my family proud. An organization's ethical guidelines encompass how the organization and its employees embody ethical principles in their dealings, with each other, and other stakeholders. Therefore, Ferrell, Fraedrich, and Farrell (2008) have defined Business ethics as "The principles and standards that guide behavior in the world of business" (p.6). In many situations, individuals must incorporate their personal ethics to match those of the organization's ethical culture. For this reason, business ethics theory indicates that an organization's ethics are evident in its organizational mission and vision (Hummels & Timmer, 2004). This is because the mission and vision determine organizational structure and culture, and thereby organizational and individual behavior.
Codes of conduct are policies including rules such as maintaining honesty, attitude, and respect (Traveler, 2009) for co-workers, the organization and customers. Only by separation of personal ethical choices in the work place, will an organization succeed and flourish. It is never appropriate for any employee, management or otherwise, to conduct business for personal gain. The people who become harmed lose trust, confidence, and the expectation of themselves and of the people who chose to put their personal ethical choice before the needs of the customer and business.
