Journal entry #4 My Old Newcastle
This essay by David Adams Richards, was really interesting. I liked many things about his style of writing. I liked how he made the title of the essay "My Old Newcastle" a paradox. The structure of the essay was different than the other essays I have read. I liked this essay in terms of structure but I'd have to say my favorite structure of all the essays that I have read was "the swan." Not to say that I havent enjoyed and learned lots from the other essays that I have read but I enjoyed the structure of "the swan" the best. I really liked the descriptive words that the author used to describe his hometown of Newcastle, New Brunswick. Even though I have never been to New Brunswick I got a good picture of
Although I enjoyed the essay about love, I found the essay about Cannibalism very helpful formulating my essay. Each paragraph had a purpose. Especially the first impression paragraphs. The first four paragraphs
In this Ted talk, Mr. Norman Spack talks about a very sensitive issue prevalent in the whole of the world, an issue which affects a substantial population of the world yet people find it difficult to address it. He talks about how sometimes when a child is born the doctors find it difficult to specify the sex of the child because of either the discrepancies among the externals or between the internal and external organs of the body. I agree with his statement that many times our feelings and sexual orientation differ from our gender identity. We also feel something which is not a normal thing for our gender but is a common trait with the opposite gender. The speaker rightly points out that whether the sexual orientation is in harmony with
The essay I chose to read was “Planting a Tree” by Edward Abbey. To me, the most interesting part of this essay is the shift from describing the terrain, to describing the missile bases located in the area. The way the author describes the military is simply fascinating ,”The life expectancy of the average Tucsonan, therefore, is thirty minutes-or whatever it takes for an ICBM to shuttle from there to here.” Also, whenever the author describes the great contemporary empires ,”Like mortally wounded tyrannosaurs, they thrash out in frenzy, seeking enemies, destroying thousands of innocent lives with each blind spasm of reaction.” The author’s use of active verbs and language makes this story develop in such a way that the story will never fall
This essay, written by David Adams Richards, was really interesting. I enjoyed many things about the author’s style of writing. Making the title of the essay "My Old Newcastle" a paradox created intrigue to read the rest of the story. The structure of the essay was different than the other essays I have read. I thought this essay was well done in terms of structure, but my favourite structure of all the essays that I have read so far was, "The Swan." Not that I haven't enjoyed and learned many things from the other essays that I have read but I enjoyed the structure of "the swan" the best. Why did you like this structure better? The descriptive words that the author used to describe his home town of Newcastle, New Brunswick really painted a
His writing transitions well and every point is made in a logical order so the readers can follow the essay easily. Secondly, Bogards ideas are clear
Passing Strange is a Broadway production that explores the life journey of Youth, a brave young man, who is doing the impossible to achieve his dream. At first he is presented as a shy guy, who does not have enough courage to declare what he desires. His mother is the one that worries about his life and his feelings, because she wants the best for her son. However, Youth decides to go on a journey far away from his mother, from his old lifestyle, far way from everything. He travels to foreign lands, meets new and interesting people; he is living the dream. Everything looks unreal, because indeed it is. Youth forgets that only love is real and everything else without love is empty. When he recalls what love is, it is already too late
In the first essay, “The Miss Dennis School of Writing,” I liked that it wasn’t only just a story but it also was filled with writing advice. “Pay attention” was the advice that popped up several times throughout the story and it is nice that this time around the teacher wasn’t saying something like, “pay attention to me and the lesson.” She really meant, “pay attention to what is going on around you in the world.” This advice goes deep into description because if you pay attention
My least favorite essay had to be the writing styles one. It was to me very boring and difficult for me since I did not know how my writing style really was. I thought that the topic was very dull and lacked any interesting qualities. In my opinion it was stupid to write about our writing styles. It was hard for me to even write a
This amazing documentary was about a woman, Kitty Hart-Moxon, who is a Holocaust survivor and talks about her experience in Auschwitz; the largest death camp during the Holocaust. After viewing this documentary, it has given me an insider about what actually went down there in those death camps. My thoughts on this documentary is that these Jews were treated like animals similar to what happened in our own state with slavery but this was far worse. This tragedy killed 6 million Jews in theses ghettos and “concentration camps”. In the concentration camps, the conditions were made of up very low food ratios and lack of sanitation and breathing space. In my perspective, the Holocaust is probably the most gruesome race genocide that has ever occurred
Simultaneously, it’s agreed that we’ve all read one to many fourth grade story endings where it was just a dream and little Jimmy didn’t actually get eaten by a tiger. Or everyone lived happily ever after. We live in a world where one of the most hated expressions is clichés – because they seem to lack the expression that the speaker intends to show. A cliché is deemed to be lacking of originality, which, on its own, can seem to explain why they always get a red pen mark in the margin that says “Really????????????” with that many question marks. And because no one wants to hear the overused “YOLO” ever again, we’ve seemed to classify it as yet another cliché.
As an artist one should have money to continue painting. Warnke’s article explain that in the renaissance time in Italy it was not the exception regarding how talented you were. In this period of time it was known as the rebirth of mostly everything. In a place filled of talented persons, Italy was the location in which performance were needed for one important time in a rich or important person.
Claar views the protectionist policy as a policy that is in favor of the countries which are rich and not considered poor. I do agree with his view because these policies create division between countries, and these polices do not benefit the poorer countries be creating barriers. He states “if we really cared about global poor, we should work to make trade freer for everyone in our global community; that means tearing down all barriers we use to keep the global poor…”(Rae and Wong, p.257). The barriers that are created were only made to make the richer countries richer, but the poorer countries better off if the barriers were lifted. I do understand that protectionit polcies were created to keep out lower prices commodities, but I think poorer
Cléo from 5 to 7 (Cléo de 5 à 7) is Agnés Varda’s third film that brought her international fame and respect. Directed by a Belgic born French female director, the film incorporates existentialism, feminism by completely destroying the border between the reality and the surrealism. Cléo from 5 to 7 contains the aspects of documentary and fictional elements at the same time and portrays a life of a spoiled young singer Florence “Cléo” victoire who nervously awaits her medical results through 5 PM till 7 PM on June 22nd. The film is all about the conflicting moments in general – artificiality and realism, bright musical comedy and tragic drama, loveliness and grotesqueness Cléo experiences while walking along the streets, and the meaning of life
My best essay that I wrote throughout the year was by far the Mango DBQ which was titled as “The Obstacles of the American Dream”. This was my best essay because of many reasons. One reason why is because I received a 98 percent on it which was my best grade of the year. Also this essay was easy to write because when papers have many structures that need to be followed it is very straightforward for me.
Although someone has died, the news of this apparent death has to be brought to the attention of the family, friends, and the public. To do this, one must know the appropriate synonyms of “to die” or “has died” to use in a formal manner. When a person normally speaks about someone that has died, it is advisable to be respectful as if one were preserving the deceased person’s existence. Therefore, an English speaker would not use slang like the phrase “she kick the bucket” or “he croaked” in a formal setting. Another example of a word that might not be acceptable in a formal situation is the Middle English word “perishen” which is defined as “to suffer death, destruction, or damage” or “to suffer a violent, sudden, or untimely death” (OED).
