My biggest issue with the way that most English classes are taught, not only in college, but at all education levels is that they don’t necessarily teach people how to write. Rather, they teach the students how other people have written. I came into this class hoping that maybe I would receive the opportunity to write my own fiction writing, which maybe does not interest the majority of students, but for me is something I looked forward to as someone who considered himself to be full of at least some worthwhile ideas. This semester was interesting and educational but not entirely my ideal learning choice. Maybe creative writing is the better path to take for dreams like mine, but that is not the point of this paper. The unit that I found the most lacking that I think could benefit the most from this teaching style that I have in my brain is definitely the third, Setting and Symbol.
I picked this because of the large amount of potential to be found with those two words. Setting is often what draws people in. Sure a round character or two sprinkled into a book will net you a few people reading, but a fully immersive setting and engrossing world will draw people in for decades. If you don’t believe me, see Harry Potter for inspiration. Whereas a strong symbol can be used to communicate meaning in ways that no other form of idea transferring device can. From elementary school to high school, I was taught that my writing had to be structured and follow strict criteria. After I arrived in Mr. Mukherjee’s ENG 102 class, I was given the opportunity to express my creative freedom through words and graphical pictures. It can often be difficult and challenging to improve upon my own writing abilities unless motived with an idea in mind. When looking back on my time at ASU, I thought about the goals that I wanted to address for myself and the course goals that my instructor had set for the class. These goals include ones that I had accomplished to the best of my ability and ones that I need to address as well as improve.
Writing is a practice that most of us were taught when we were young. We were taught the basics of grammar, how to form a sentence, conjunction words, how to write paragraphs and more. Although we have learned this skill while growing up and have used the skill every year after entering kindergarten, this does not mean our writing process will ensure the best work. The authors that I chose each encourage their audience to excel in the art of writing in their own way to help with the writing process.

Throughout the course of freshmen year I have developed different skills and opinions on writing. I feel I have created a more mature style of writing and a better understanding of literature. I have changed my view of writing over this semester and acquired a strong liking for it. The importance of writing has become more visible throughout the past few months. Writing is crucial in many aspects of a person’s life. I have grown to be a more powerful and well built writer throughout this course.
During this semester in English 107, I have progressed more as a writer. Before I went to University of Arizona, my writing was rigid. I wrote five-paragraph TOEFL style essay all the time in my high school life. After I attended in English 107, I was not confident about my writing skill. Throughout these three projects we have done, I become more and more confident about my writing skill than before. The Student Learning Outcomes also helped me to grow as a writer a lot. In these goals, I did well on several of them, but I still need to work on the other goals.
This course has helped me to understand the difference between college and high school writing. When I was a high school student, I was very confident about my writing skills. From an early age I have been passionate about reading. Like seriously, when I was five years old I was upset that I didn’t get the newest Little Mermaid book for Christmas. However, I have never had an interest in writing. Unfortunately, as I plan to go to graduate school to obtain my Ph.D, I really cannot avoid it. Over the years, my lack of enthusiasm about writing has caused me to view most English classes as a chore, something I needed to do in order to advance to what I really wanted to do with my life. With the risk of sounding like a suck-up, this is one of the first English classes I have valued because I have felt like I improved some aspect of my writing in each essay.
Within the English III class, my former experience in creative writing and affinity for classical styles of literature shall more than likely provide the ability for growth within the classroom. As a person who values differing perspectives, my ultimate goal is to obtain a variety of perspectives involving those in the course, as well as the literary discussions relating to real world social perspectives and morality. Expressing myself through writing has always exhilarated my mind. Throughout grade school, I was continuously composing poems and short stories, not only for class assignments, but for the pure joy of doing it. However, entering a college English course terrified me. Having graduated fourteen years prior, and only flexing my writing muscles for personal journal entries and job resumes, I felt intimidated. Yet, I understood that in order to succeed in college, and my future career, I would need to absorb the knowledge of techniques, structures, and critical thinking skills presented within this course.
Imagine reading the same book over and over and over again. After about the fifth time it would start to get boring. College professors have to read multiple papers and it tends to get boring when they all sound the same. When writing, students do not venture out and get creative. Writing in English is all about perception and varies from person to person. Every piece of writing should be different and based on each individual 's perspective. Sometimes students do not venture out and get creative with their writing, they stick to the bland and boring basic ways that everyone else uses. In the article Freirean Voices, Student Choices, a college professor at Mid Michigan Community College explains the problems students and teachers face with writing and how he has worked to fix this problem. Barry Alford, the author of the article, uses all personal experience to persuade the reader that students should be writing in more complex and rich ways. Another tactic he used to persuade the audience is by expressing other people’s ideas including Kenneth Burke, David Bartholomae and Ira Shor’s ideas. Alford’s main purpose was to express upon readers the idea that students should be writing in more complex and rich ways with more creativity.
I believe that teaching is one of the most important professions in the world today. From the very beginning, until present time, teaching has been around. The book of Genesis speaks of God walking and talking with Adam in The Garden of Eden, God was teaching Adam. I will be proud to, one day, be a part of this great calling.
This paper will identify which of the Kolb learning styles best suits me and why I think so. It will also give some examples from my past and present to support these findings. After determining, the learning styles that best fit me and completing an inventory exercise, I have concluded that I learn best using audio and visual techniques in the learning process. I agree with everything this exercise has brought to light. I never knew that these styles were the meaning by which I learned. I have also included examples as to how I see the use and benefits of these learning styles in my career.
Course Description: This course focuses on skills required for effective writing in a variety of contexts, with emphasis on exposition, analysis, and argumentation, and also including introductory use of a variety of research skills.
During the semester of English Composition, I have grown into a stronger writer. Through writing different pieces such as descriptive and persuasion topics, the ideas have been created through words. Due to this class, I have felt to become a more confident writer going into college. By achieving the curriculum, developing new ideas and describe new topics, I have learned to achieve in this course.
In the field of education there could arise many philosophical ideas of each individual teacher. Many of the past philosophies have been and still are used in today’s education programs, such as the Socratic method. My philosophy will also contain some of the many philosophies of the past and possibly the future. I will state the nature of students, the nature of knowledge, the purpose of public education, method, and curriculum according to my own philosophies, which also may be based the philosophical ideas of previous individuals.
