My Organization's Structure

Which of the organizational structures does your organization operate under? My organization is mostly decentralized with a variable degree of specialization. However, my organization is large enough that the other elements of organizational structure can be observed as well. The term organizational structure is defined as: how job tasks are formally divided, grouped, and coordinated. There are six key elements concerning an organizations structure: work specialization, departmentalization, chain of command, span of control, centralization and decentralization, and formalization (p. 231).

The span of control used to be larger. However, such a large span of control proved to be counterproductive due to miscommunication, quality control, and accountability issues.
Centralization refers to the degree to which decision making is concentrated at a single point in the organization. In centralized organizations, top managers make all of the decisions, and lower level managers merely carry out their directives. In organizations at the other extreme decentralized decision making is pushed down to the managers closest to the action or even to work groups. The organization that I am employed at is decentralized. It utilizes standard operating procedures such as a share point website on the corporate intranet, internal employee training programs, and standardized codes of conduct which clearly define appropriate employee behaviors. These efforts clarify the main goals of the organization and establish well defined parameters of operation for its team members which empowers its employees to make the appropriate decisions in their daily activities. Consequently, employees who are able to think and act independently allow an organization to become decentralized, which reduces the number of high salaried managers needed to run the organization.
