My Passion For Football

Ever since I could walk, I can remember being involved in some kind of sport. Whether it was recreational or competitive, I wanted to be involved in it. As the years went on, my passion for athletics narrowed to one particular sport, football. What drew me to this particular sport are its three main characteristics: physicality, mental prowess, and the intangibles. These assets are required for not only a person, but a team to be successful.

The physical aspect of the game of football separates those who are truly dedicated and motivated from those who aren’t willing to sacrifice their body. That sacrifice doesn’t just mean throwing my body into a collision. It entails the preparation, not just the performance. This takes place in the weightroom and on the practice field. There are days when lifting and conditioning aren’t the most fun activity, just like going to school. I have to know what every teammate is doing on any given play. I also have to figure out what the defense’s plan is. In a way, football is like a game of chess, full of calculated risks and strategy. My experience at my position has taught me how and when to take those risks, and when it is best play it safe. The analytical aspect of football is the most crucial and unseen characteristic of the game.

The last main characteristic, intangibles, can be described most accurately with the word passion. Passion is what fuels every effort towards success on the field. It is what gets me up early in the summer to workout, or to run and extra sprint when my body aches not to. It’s why I’ve spent countless hours studying film on opponents.
