My passion is law enforcement, I love watching the activity on “cops” getting criminals off the street. I first got into law enforcement as a kid, the D.A.R.E program in 5th grade inspired me, to help people to not do drugs. The TV show “cops” really got my attention of how much they do to help the community. When I watch “cops or CSI”, I get completely sucked into the show and enjoy learning how evidence is gathered, processed and presented in court. I love law enforcement not only because I enjoy watching cop shows, training for the police academy, meeting new people, and what it feels like to be a cop for a day. School is a big part of helping me become a law enforcement officer and I enjoy school a lot. I love learning new things. The classes I take in High School and College are helping me achieve my passion. English class helps me, with expression in written English, word format, and complete sentences. In college, I can take Administration of Justice Classes; like evidence, patrolling and how to write reports for when I need to put evidence in the system. Many classes at Las Positas let one volunteer and help the Police departments in the area. The second reason I love the idea of becoming a Police Officer is joining and passing the Police Academy rigorous standards. The expectations are for men and women as well as for women in the armed forces; I need to be able to do sit ups in a time period of 32 per minute, do push-ups in a time period of 15 per minute,
This book also offers a chapter on the pros and cons of becoming an officer. In general, it has information on how to become an officer. The book also sheds light on the inner world of police officers, how officers will protect their own--even if that individual is wrong. There is also a chapter on the traits an individual should have to better function as an officer. I will use this source to build on the "initial entry" of my outline. I will also be able to extract information for the "requirements" section of my
Becoming a police officer takes a lot of heart and determination. To become a police officer you must obtain a high school diploma or GED, pass the law enforcement entrance exam, graduate from the police academy and work towards promotion. In order to graduate from the police academy recruits must undergo 21 weeks of intense training. At the police academy recruits will learn all the following: state laws, criminal investigations, patrol procedures, firearms training, traffic control, defense driving, self-defense, first aid and computer skills (“An Overview of Police Academy Training”). The final step before graduating from the police academy recruits will take the Oath of Honor. “On my honor, I will never betray my badge, my integrity, my character, or the public trust. I will always have the courage to hold myself and others accountable for our actions. I will always uphold the constitution, my community and the agency I serve” (“What Is The Law Enforcement Oath of
My main focus for making this program is to become part of law enforcement and help protect the people that I will serve. I think I am fit for this program because I am athletic, intelligent, and outgoing. I always try to make the right decision and look out for my fellow peers. My father is apart of law enforcement and I look up to what he does which peaked my interest into law enforcement. As I watch a cop car go by I always imagined what it would be like to be that officer. Every year, my family and I go to the National Night Out when my town hosts it and our neighboring town, Manalapan. They have all types of law enforcement, DEA, K-9 unit, sheriffs, and police officers that participate and demonstrate what it would be like to be one of
It gives me a leg up on other applicants for police jobs that only have a degree or military training. With both military training and a degree, the only competition for a job is someone with both military training and degree like me or someone who already is a police officer and is looking to move somewhere else. The job outlook for future police jobs looks good because as the population increases every year, the criminal element increases as well resulting in more police officers needed to deal with the increase in crime. This increase in police jobs also means there are more openings for advancement to higher level police jobs such as Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) or a police dog handler (K-9 Unit). Both of these police jobs appeal to me and would be the pinnacle of my career, only barely being beaten by becoming a SWAT Commander or a Police Chief. Getting either a SWAT or K-9 Officer job is going to be tough because these two higher level police jobs are the most sought after by police officers, especially those officers that are ex-military as in the case of SWAT. In order to get a SWAT or K-9 job, I plan on showing them I am the best person for the job. I am working on this even now by keeping up with my physical training by working out twice a day. I go to the gym for two hours in the morning and then in the evening, doing sprint drills
Law enforcement is a career that is both violent and rewarding in many capacities. Justice needs to be served in law enforcement and they have a responsibility to uphold the law and serve the people in the community. Law enforcement is crucial in the world today as a global realm as life continues to be more complex and law enforcement struggles to combat many aspects of crime. In order to combat these problems and have a positive future in the criminal justice system, everyone must work together on a bigger scale.
Police officers attend academy for a designated period of time. Every state is different some states require that classes to be taken at a community college, while other states require that training is taken at a local academy. While in the academy police officer are trained to protect and serve the citizens within the community. There are physical and educational courses that are taken to prepare officers to handle crimes that may happen at any given time. Some of the courses include: report writing, patrol procedures, investigations, traffic accident investigation, defensive tactics, use of force, nonlethal weapons, criminal and constitutional law and juvenile justice law/procedures. While in the academy training courses are offered to prepare academy students emotionally, physically, and mentally to handle themselves professionally on the scene of a crime. Training does not end with the academy, officers are required to complete continuing education hours yearly to stay current with training.
How you become an officer is by obtaining the Necessary Education. A high school diploma or a GED is typically the minimum level of education needed to become a police officer, Submit an Application to a Police Department, ,Graduate from a Police Academy Training Program, Actively Work to Obtain Promotions. A police officer, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the common duties of a police officer include patrolling designated areas, enforcing laws, answering calls for help, arresting individuals suspected of committing crimes, issuing citations, testifying in court and conducting traffic stops. Every Officer has to take an oath before beginning their career in law enforcement to set a good structure of what they are there to do.
Courts, police, and corrections have been established in order to enforce law. These agencies consist of trained and educated individuals in the criminal justice field. Police officers are required to attend an academy where they learn, “…state laws, criminal investigations, patrol procedures, firearms training, traffic control, defensive driving, self-defense, first aid and computer skills” (Education Portal). These officers are prepared to deal with any dangerous situations in a safe and
As a child, I always wanted a career enforcing the law. Weather it was with the police department or criminal justice was undecided at that time. As I grew older I pulled more to the fence of criminal justice. Simply because I do not like the way the system is set up.
The purpose of law enforcement is to protect the lives and property of both the community’s citizens and people who visit and work in the community. There are many different levels of law enforcement careers such as local, state and federal agencies. There are also many different occupations within the law enforcement field. One of those occupations is a police officer. (10 Things You Need to Consider Before Becoming a Police Officer, Criminology Careers.com, August 2012, Timothy Roufa, Criminology Careers Expert). To become a police officer it takes more than just wanting to carry a gun and “catch the bad guys”. The hiring process will be long. After submitting an application, each candidate must go through a written test, a physical agility test, an oral interview or two, a “background” check of nearly every aspect of his life, including driving records, drug or alcohol usage, a thorough medical and psychological exam, and a polygraph test. Then after that, each candidate must go through an exhausting physical and mental challenge known as the Police Academy. If the candidates make it through the Police Academy then they advance to on-the-job training known as Field Training, which is even more difficult than the Police Academy. After all of this training and becoming a police officer, one would have to ask themselves if the job is worth it. Police officers are put into dangerous situations daily. After all they have to deal with drunks, the mentally disabled
First and foremost, law enforcements first order of business is to serve and protect, which is common in their credo, to all no matter what background they come from. Along with that, they are also put in place to investigate crimes, call response and emergencies, and being active members in the community (educate students on safety). Police officers play a crucial role in the law enforcement system. Usually you only need a high school diploma to qualify for police academy training, many officers have two to four year degrees in criminal justice. The median annual pay for this field is usually $55,010, which was according to the 2010 Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Being a police officer is by no means easy, there is a lot of things that goes on behind the scenes, things that don’t make the job so great. The job of a street cop is physically demanding, yes there is cops that aren’t in the best shape but to be a good cop you should be in decent shape. Their job is dangerous, there is all kinds of crimes and calls they get sent on every single day. There is many of
The police academy does prepare you physically and also provides theory that you may use. The academy is also where you learn proper handcuffing procedure, self defense etc. However, to have the academy without FTO or vice versa is ludicrous! When you bring the craft and the profession together then you have a great officer in the making. Most of us learn our skills and knowledge
I really enjoy the concepts of the criminal justice system and how it works. I grew up in a family that revolved around emergency units, ranging from EMTS, AEMTS, Prison Guards, Nurses, Police Officers and so forth. Being around that at the time gave me a love for the field. Understanding the codes, the high pace calls, honestly, even the hours. I fell in love with the idea of being able to make a difference in people’s lives, and for example, if I was going to be a police officer that is what I would do.
The curriculum that is devised for a police officer is very important to the police officer and his or her success in their chosen career path. An officer’s training is also very important to the community in which they serve and the department in which they work. An officer must receive training in a variety of fields to help them be a well-rounded police officer. Officers receive training in such areas as: law, community relations, firearms, vehicle driving, search and seizure, and cultural awareness. The basic curriculum that is offered to a new recruit is focused on giving the recruit the best overall training that will give him or her the tools necessary to become the
