PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY OF NURSING The American Nurses Association defines nursing in this way, “Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of the individual, families, communities and populations” (ANA,2010) During this paper, I will discuss why I chose nursing as a career and the essence of nursing including historical, ethical and political factors. Then, I will examine my own personal belief system about patients, their friends and family, other members of the health care team and my own health. Finally, I will explain my future plans in two, five and ten years, including what limitations I might experience and what strengths will help me accomplishing my goals. Choice of Nursing As a nurse we encompass so many different responsibilities into the daily care of patients. The main reason I chose nursing as a career is because I have a passion to help patients and communities improving quality of life by providing not only health care but education. I am passionate for serving others and helping to improve their lives. As a nurse I am able to engage with people of different backgrounds, race, social economical class and culture. Nursing enables you to learn so much about people, giving you a better understanding of the world as a whole, which helps you to become more compassionate and appreciative of
