As I am shuffling through the plethora of papers sitting on my desk, hoping to find the career pamphlet that tells me who I am and what I am supposed to be doing with my life, I realize that no one other than myself can answer “Who am I? Who am I in the process of becoming?” As I begin to map out my future in accordance with my interests and career goals, I realize how lending a helping hand and acting as role models for others have been an essential part of my daily life. I aspire to impact the lives of others, as there is nothing else that brings me more happiness and personal gratification. There is no other way to describe the warm feeling that I experience when I see the change in someone’s expression or attitude after I help them, whether it be through the way their eyes light up or the way they smile gratefully at me. It could be a small act of kindness, such as holding the door for someone or assuring a worried person, but I believe as humans it is our duty to serve and act as a role model for others, to promote the well-being of communities worldwide.
As I grown up, my community, consisting of my parents, friends, and pastors, all have been nurturing me and giving me the resources I need to become successful in the future. Therefore, I choose to spend my time-serving others, so I can help give the necessary resources for the coming generation, as well. Volunteering in my local soup kitchen and working in a rehabilitation center, I witness first-hand the impact of a
My vision as an undergraduate student of the Haskayne School of Business (HSB) is to become a well-rounded influential leader and equip myself with a set of skills and values that will enhance me as an individual in my career. Thus, my goal is to succeed academically and socially, graduating with a distinction and having built strong relationships.
Pursing a career as a medical doctor is an opportunity for me to mentor youth in underserved populations. As a child, I was raised in the low income, urban community of Roxbury, MA. Although not as notorious today, the neighborhood had garnered negative attention for its high crime rates. My mother emigrated from Haiti and raised me as a single parent. Due to our financial circumstance, Roxbury became our permanent residence. I have always felt there was something lacking in Roxbury in comparison to other towns I visited. My teenage years were largely spent in the suburban town of Stoneham where I attended high school. There was a literal difference in air quality and a psychology contrast in future prospects. While native students of
There are few certainties of what one will encounter during life. A common joke names two: death and
One deciding to serve their surrounding community in an attempt to better the lives of people living in that community is one of the most selfless actions one individual person can perform. Throughout my time in high school career I committed myself to serving the broader community in order to better society whether it be me serving as Co-President of Life is Delicious or raising money for Special Olympics Connecticut by doing the Penguin Plunge.
There has always been a desire for in me to help others who can be in difficult situations or in need of help. This desire has pushed me to pursue a career within the social work field. There have been numerous instances in my life, where I took the chance to help others before helping myself. Whether these instances dealt with my family, friends, peers or strangers, I have always seen the worth in helping others. Putting others before myself has always been an enjoying experience because I am able to be selfless and provide opportunities to others who might not have the resources or help to do so. Knowing that I can have a great impact on others’ lives by directing them to resources or listening to their experiences excites me because I want
My church opened many doors for me to assist my local community. For example, for the past 6 years, I led low-income families around my church campus to collect free school supplies and clothing. Every year in November, I delivered Thanksgiving meal to struggling families. At Christmas, I assisted my church in giving away Christmas presents to children who wouldn’t otherwise receive gifts. I also traveled to needy parts of the country on mission trips. On them, I restored a church and playground. These unique experiences were just the beginning of my service to beloved people and the community.
IM was introduced at an early stage in rotations and there was an immediate connection. I was fascinated by the sheer diversity of cases, many unsolved, as well as the amount of direct patient contact. These were patients that spanned ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic gender differences and more, a fascinating mix. Unlike many other specialties, comprehensive holistic care is at the core of treatment, with emphasis on caring for the chronically ill or acute patient. These would be patients that would require continuous and coordinated care which is in line with how I seek to approach case management. Internal Medicine complements my professional and personal ethos of hard work, discipline, compassion, while necessitating challenging diagnoses
Over the past few years I have discovered how truly heartwarming it is to help those around you. One of my favorite quotes of all time pertains to that. "The greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively.” As people it should always be our goal to make a difference in the world around us. Every single person has something that they can contribute to society but their circumstances may prevent them from reaching their full potential. When given an opportunity to help someone no matter how big or small the task is a person should always give their all. That task may mean more to them than you even realize.
Stepping on to my high school’s campus for the first time, I felt a little nervous, a bit excited and very clueless. I rushed to my friends who were conveniently standing near the entrance; almost as to feel safe. The transition from middle school to high school meant very much to me. I entered high school knowing that it was my chance to finally work towards reaching my goal of attending college; it was the chance life had privileged me with. Looking back it all now, It was a change I didn't feel prepared for, yet, I regret very little and glad I worked as hard as I did.
The two weeks I tracked were November 6th through the 19th. I chose those days because I was paid on the 6th, and I wouldn’t be paid again until the 20th. By choosing those dates, I was able to see how much I spent from that paycheck and how much left over I actually had. I liked being able to see how much of my paycheck was left over by the time I was paid again. I use that extra money for a buffer in case there is something I have to spend a little extra money on, and so I always have money in my bank account.
I thrive on gaining knowledge. Even now, as a non-traditional student and busy mother to two young children, learning excites me. As an 18-year-old in Germany, I began a 10-year career as a military analyst that honed my ability to think critically, pay attention to detail, and visualize holistic solutions to unique problems. However, I spent my free time riding a bike along The Rhine searching for a quiet space to settle in with the wisdom of books such as The Art of Happiness and The Elegant Universe. There, on those riverbanks, I discovered within myself an innate curiosity of the mind and the fundamental nature of the world.
I started my career in an unorthodox way: delivering science and technology news directly to
When it comes to careers I have always strived for something that would benefit others, and that thought alone has driven me to consider a plethora of effective careers. Ultimately my chosen career would be decided by an event that took place my freshman year of High School. During that time my best friend was suffering from severe depression. That was one of the tougher years for him, and he was doing alright for a while, until about halfway through the year. That night we were talking and everything began to hit him, he recently lost some friends, some of his family members were not respecting him for who he is,
As we approach adulthood there are obstacles, challenges, and decisions to come to but it all begins with oneself. There are several personal experiences that shaped me into the person I am today but all the experiences shared one common interest, the interest to assist, to help and guide others, to volunteer, do more and go beyond my limits. One specific experience includes, the opportunity I received of working with Bernice's Place (Elizabeth Coalition to House the Homeless)
I have a wide range of skills and knowledge that I have acquired throughout my personal and professional life. I can communicate with different types of people regardless of age, race or class. I have accessed a huge range of courses that have enabled me to develop interpersonal skills including negotiation and dealing with different types of people and personalities. I also have the knowledge, drive and enthusiasm to work alone when required as I am self-motivated and can meet targets and deadlines. I believe that challenges are best met positively by developing and improving knowledge and skills and through professional reflective dialogue that leads to change. I am very hard-working and reliable. I work well under pressure achieving a high standard of work. I have practical and organisational skills and I can find solutions to problems and face challenges confidently.
