My Personal Statement On Self Esteem

According to the textbook, the self-esteem is defined as “a person’s evaluation of his or her attributes or the positive or negative valence associated with those attributes”. Looking back at my childhood, it is difficult to rate my self-esteem in certain areas. This is due to the fact that I have never put these areas separately but rather as a whole. As a child going through my teens, I would rate my physical appearance a 5. Back then, I was not concerned with my physical appearance at all. In fact, I would just put on a simple outfit, brush my hair and be out the door in 10 minutes. My priorities back then were just to be successful academically and playing video games. Fortunately, my close group of friends were not concerned about physical appearance which is why I was comfortable enough to not to be concerned about makeup or certain clothes. It allowed me to grow as an individual and the confidence I needed in those years. After going through undergraduate career to the present, my self-esteem rating has changed since my earlier years. I would rate myself at a 7 or 8. I found myself starting to put an effort in my physical appearance and trying to dress more appropriate for my age. Starting to become aware of what I was wearing to wearing makeup soon became a norm for me. I find it very difficult to leave the house without having any makeup.
