Counseling is a profession of which the goal is to help people who are experiencing issues. In retrospect these issues are impacting the client greatly, to a point that is hindering or obstructing daily functions or some aspect of their lives. As it stands, the therapist is tasked with adjusting or changing how a client views, approaches, and reacts to the situations and circumstances that are taking place in his/her life. The idea of counseling is derived from many different theories. Depending upon the nature of the problem the client is experiencing will determine, which theory is ultimately used to bring about a change in behavior. With that being said, it is relevant to point out that counselor does not fix and make a problem …show more content…
I find myself always looking for the good in people no matter how bad they are and hoping for some element of change, because I know it can be mustered up from somewhere deep within. For as long as I can remember, I have always been encouraged to treat other people as I would like to be treated. In doing this, one has to exert a level of respect for people in general, while being specific as to how you treat them by internalizing if it were you the best treatment is what you would be seeking. I would also begin with Rogers, because I am a firm believer that the solution we have to many problems can be resolved within ourselves. Let me elaborate, the solution to any mans’ problem lies within themselves, each individual has an indication of how to resolve his/her problem, but may need a little help getting there. This help may take on different forms, maybe the individual needs to be pushed in the direction he or she needs to go, often other people can see where you want to go and help you get there with a bit more clarity than your own naked eye or hindsight can perceive. Simply put, it could be a matter of exhausting oneself mentally, to see who can help me get to the end result that is necessary to make my life a little less stressful. Even though the solution lies within that doesn’t mean people are obligated to handle the task alone. The solution involves enlisting other people a counselor, teacher, preacher, your family to …show more content…
This therapy works only if I allow the client to become a fully functioning person. According to Rogers (1959), a fully functioning person is one who gives and receives positive regard. Once again this a non-directive therapy of which the clients chooses the goals, and the therapist has to be tolerant of that goal. This therapy allows the client to work through solutions that are within themselves to resolve issues. Which is why I like it, the client has to make an effort, and think through what behavior needs to be changed, and the needed steps to get there are agreed upon by the therapist. There is a need for the therapist not to just agree with whatever the client says. It is highly likely, the client will be able to see right through the therapist and let the therapist know that he/she are not being genuine. I would use this therapy in the school system to change a population whether it be test scores, undisciplined behavior, or community involvement with the school. I would also use this therapy with a client who has an issue he or she would like to solve for instance not being able to tell people no in her family, personal life, and at work when asked to do personal
The philosophy that underlies the counseling profession is unique among mental health professionals. According to Remley & Herlihy (2014), the philosophy is made up of four components. First, counselor 's view mental health challenges through a positive, wellness-oriented lens. The primary goal of the wellness model is for the client to achieve the highest degree of mental health possible. Psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers follow the medical model of mental health. The goal of these clinicians is to cure the client’s illness, which differs drastically from counselor’s view of clients.
I believe counseling is a collaborative partnership between client and counselor. Furthermore, this collaborative partnership is built from trust and acceptance of both client and counselor. I hope in conjunction with clients to understand the issues and concerns so to help them tap into their wisdom, creativity, and strengths to meet their current challenges. I believe in a comprehensive perspective through which clients can better comprehend themselves in the framework that our thinking about events can lead to emotional and behavioral upset. Moreover, counselors are to provide a safe environment for clients to explore their challenges and identify ways to move differently in overcoming these challenges.
Values, Morals, and Beliefs are components that play a role in an individual’s self-identity. The establishment of these components shape human nature, behavior, and the development of an individual’s purpose. The basis of these fundamentals has contributed to my desire to become a counselor. This paper will discuss my views of human nature, factors of behavior changes, goals of therapy, the roles of a therapist, and the counseling approaches that I chose to incorporate in a practice.
As a counselor in training, I believe that counseling is a collaborative process between you and I. Counseling is a personal and safe process that deeply respects and honors each individual’s unique life experiences. Here are some aspects of counseling and therapy as I perceive and practive it: Therapeutic counseling
In schools all over the world today, School Counselors are crucial to assisting students, parents, school administrations, and the community. I believe that creating an effective counseling program that supports the counselors’ role in education will foster a close interaction between students and counselor to achieve success in their personal/social lives, academic achievements, and college readiness careers.
According to author Kendra Cherry, “professional counseling is an application of mental health, psychological or development principles, through cognitive, affective, behavioral or systemic intervention strategies, that address wellness, personal growth, or career development” (Cherry - Paraphrase). Many counselors specialize in specific forms of therapy. Generally, counselors who focus on specific types of counseling methods usually require advanced knowledge in the specific field. Counseling can be described as guidance of an individual by utilizing psychological methods especially in collecting case history information, using various techniques of the personal interview and testing interests as well as aptitudes. Cognitive behavioral
This paper explores my counseling theory. It looks at the way I view human nature and the development of personality through the lens of an elementary school counselor. This paper looks at the development of psychopathology and the goals of therapy using fundamental cognitive behavioral theory (CBT) and techniques used in CBT and person centered therapy (PCT). Researched is used to advocate for my use of child center play therapy (CCPT) along with taking a look at reality therapy (RT) for use with the older elementary students . I conclude with a look at spiritual influences on my future counseling career. Throughout the paper I reference the American School Counselors Association (ASCA) and its national model to help tie in the theories and practices with the guidelines of being a school counselor.
Counseling is a relatively young profession when compared to other mental health professions. In my brief personal and professional experience with the field, I have come to define counseling as a process of engagement between two people, both of whom are bound to change through a collaborative process that involves both the therapist and the client in co-constructing solutions to concerns.
My personal philosophy of life and my philosophy of counseling has been deeply affected by my life experiences as a young child and also as an adult. I am fortunate that my life has been a good life and I consider myself to be fortunate to have to have good parents and many loving family members. I do not recall having any events in my childhood that I would consider to be abusive or neglectful on the part of my family, and for that I consider myself to be lucky. I know several people who were abused as a child and it seems to have impacted them in many aspects of their lives even into adulthood.
There are many definitions of counseling, but most share the same idea: it is when one person helps another. To me counseling represents one word more than any other: Change. One person is unhappy with some area of their life and wants it to change while the other person helps to facilitate that change. Just as there are many definitions of counseling there are many types of counseling with different philosophies.
This application paper will discuss my personal theory of counseling or psychotherapy in a number of different areas. Specifically, I will discuss the seven areas of interest. First, I will discuss and describe
In the beginning of the semester, I thought that I was not going to be able to go through with this program because I felt that I was not prepared to be in the clinic. The thought of being recorded made me feel very uncomfortable and nervous. I cannot believe how fast this semester went and how much information we learned. This semester was one of the most challenging, overwhelming, and nerve wrecking semesters that I have ever experienced. After a couple of practice sessions with my peers, it helped me feel a lot more relaxed and comfortable being recorded. As of right now, I feel very comfortable being in the clinic with my co-therapist and my client.
Counselors aid their clients by providing counseling services to them. Counselors also facilitate clients with exploring and understanding their worlds, as well as, discover better ways of thinking and living. A common factor in why people seek counseling services is that they are feeling weakened, under severe distressed, or circumstances have left them in a negative state of mind about something. Counseling services may vary, from individual, couples, family, or a group; assistance can be provided by face-face dialogue, group work, telephone, email and written materials’ methods.
¬When considering what my own personal philosophy of counseling would be, it was eye opening to consider who I was a person and how much I have grown. The self analysis was new to me because I never thought about how I do that on a day to day basis. Reviewing the questions I found that a lot of my focus surrounded family, my significant other, and close friends. Constantly living in a diverse population and having that as my surrounding also made its mark in my answers. I also noted that both past and present influences, but primarily the present, play a large role in my own perspective. By following the prompt, I was made to understand that my thought process makes me think of what is occurring in the present and how I can alter these
Manuel is a 15-year-old “at-risk” adolescent, who is a client at my practicum site. He has been extremely depressed and didn’t care about living anymore. However, as a counselor there are some ethical guidelines, which assist counselors with avoiding lawsuits. There are four particular guidelines a counselor must be aware of when working with a suicidal depressed 15 year old. According to McWhirter, “Knowing the ethics code specific to a practitioner’s field is paramount. The American Psychological Association, the American Counseling Association, the National Education Association, the National Organization for Human Services, and other professional organizations all have written ethic” (p. 74).
