My Philosophy of Education

A student is a person whom has not yet full grasped all the knowledge and understanding needed in a specific matter. In the degree I am studying to obtain, Elementary Education, it is essential to know and understand how to help that of younger age children. As a teacher there are many jobs one must take on, many roles that must be played, and many positions that must be filled. One of those is to help a child to overcome selfishness and self-centeredness as expressed by Rousseau. Although countless may think that this lesson should be taught within the home many students do not get that benefit. One role a teacher must take on is the mask of moral provider.
In my aspiration in my classroom is that I will be able to touch each child. Whether the touch I give is through that of knowledge and understanding, moral goals, or growth as a person within society. Behavioralism is seen in this particular part of my personal philosophy of education. Founded on the view that human beings are primarily the product of their environment and that children can become moral, intelligent people if they are rewarded for proper behavior.
Essentialism is also going to be an exceedingly important part of my everyday classroom. I believe in some parts of the “Back to Basic” approach; however, not in all ways.
My philosophy of education would include a classroom that supports creativity and gives students an opportunity to explore the world in the confines of four walls. Knowledge results from countless experiences and interactions throughout an individual’s lifetime. I believe the purpose of education is to allow students to discover who they are through exploring who has come before them, and what is possible for them in the future. Formal education should provide students with more than a foundation in basic disciplines. As children we have many goals and dreams. Eventually, the time comes when we have to make a career decision based on our interests and goals. The choices that we make now will have a lasting effect on our lives. Like most college students I have explored many career options, but I am always lead back to the education field. Teachers have a very difficult job because they have the power to shape and inspire our future nation. If I had to pick one view that is most compatible with my own view and learning and teaching it would have to be Constructivism. If I got to choose another one I would go with Cognitive. Constructivism is a view that focuses on the active role of the learner and a Cognitive view sees learning as an active mental process of receiving, remembering, and using knowledge. Both of these views see the role of students as an active role; an involved role. I believe that we learn knowledge and change our behavior based upon this knowledge; instead of the other way around. A teacher used the Socratic method in my senior English class in high school. Although it had its merits, many students did not respond to the questions and dialogue favored by the teacher. Perennialism is a nice philosophy, but its use in the classroom should be limited. Students need to be made to feel that they are part of the physical world and the world is constantly changing. The great works of literature should be used in the classroom, but other work, and activities need to be included as well.
My personal philosophy of education is that children learn from different ways. Children learn by watching, listening, and hands-on activities. Different learning styles are implied in an inclusive classroom. For example, children best learn by doing and experiencing things on their own. Therefore, as an educator we accommodate the children’s needs by creating an active teaching environment. Inclusive education system enhances those different learning styles that match the child's learning needs and helped them adapt to the environment. It also has students with and without disabilities that are being educated together, giving them an opportunity to socialize with other students with different learning preferences. For me, the decision to become a teacher is more of a way of life than a career. I have always loved school, practicing at being school marm from a young age, and voraciously devouring every shred of education offered me in my career as a student. If it were possible, I would be a student for the rest of my life. And then I still would not have learned enough. As a teacher, I hope to instill this appetite for knowledge in secondary students. They are, after all, the future leaders of the world, and what better place to expand the minds of the generations to come than here in Appalachia where education programs, especially the sciences, which I plan to teach, are poorly funded and children’s dreams
Cicero said, "What noble employment is more valuable to the state than that of the man who instructs the rising generation?" He was correct in saying this because the young people of today will become the world leaders of tomorrow. The educators that instruct these children are important to this society because they will help shape the lives of these young people.
“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” (Angelou, 2009) This is a truth that I have witnessed firsthand. As a child, at the tender age of seven years, I was blessed with an educator, Mrs. Cager, whose commitment to her students was so profound until I have never forgotten her. She made me feel like I was the most important person in her classroom. Her encouraging words instilled a level of confidence within me that I still cling to and apply more than 40 years later. Her commitment is directly responsible for my personal philosophy of education also being commitment.
For many individuals, choosing a career is one of the hardest decisions to be faced with. The majority of students in college spend their first year stressing about what they are going to do with the rest of their life. I, fortunately, have known since I was in middle school that I wanted to be an elementary school teacher. As a future teacher I feel that essentialism and progressivism are going to be my unique philosophies of education.
Education entails individual human development in the cognitive, emotional, creative and social areas. All children are entitled to a free education regardless of race, cultural background or handicaps. For education to be an effective part of the students life, the student and teacher must be actively and enthusiastically involved in learning. A teacher needs to be well prepared and organized. They need to know the perspective goals for each student and ways to achieve these goals. Teachers need to work with students to help them grow and develop ways to use their knowledge.

I believe helping students learn and grow is my purpose in life. Education helps prepare students for the real world. When students become young adults, they can help contribute to society by having a job and giving back to their community. Education is a vital part of each individual's life, we need to look to the education team in finding ways to make education better. Each team member has a role to play. The role of the student is to attend school and learn new information that they can apply to their lives. Teachers are responsible for meeting the needs of every learner and ensuring continual growth for students. A paraprofessional, an assistant to the teacher and students, forms a bond with the education team to carry out the task of educating the students. There are all different kinds of students and each of them deserve the chance at a fulfilling education that improves their self - esteem and self - efficiency in the world. Every child deserves a teacher that is fair and understanding of the different ability levels of each student in their classroom. This is my philosophy of education. In preparing to become a teacher who truly tries to understand the vast differences between children, I want to address the nature of students, the nature of knowledge, the purposes of public education, the methods of teaching, and the curriculum area that I am studying.
The learner is the most important person in teaching and they are the ones that allow us to become better at what we do. The view of the learner is very important to me.
