The medical field is in high demand and the need for medical professionals will keep growing in society; especially with the baby boomer’s population rising. According to data from the U.S Census Bureau, it shows that there are 76.4 million baby boomers in the U.S today. (Pollard and Scommegna). As a result, many Americans will be retiring and receiving Medicare so the heath care field will have an increase in employment opportunities and a higher chance of career advancement. Since the variety of health care occupations are higher, there is a higher chance to work from home. Some of the key skill for HIM includes communication, attention to detail, and problem-solving, Interpersonal skills, and integrity. As the demands for health information become more diverse, health information management (HIM) professionals provide their expertise to protect health information and play a vital role in the healthcare industry. Education/Certification Since the Health Information Management is in high demand there are a variety of schools who offer (HIM) programs with specific concentrations. The college I currently attend, Central New Mexico Community College, offers a Health Information Management Program, which states that an associate of an applied science degree program will provide you with the opportunity to gain the knowledge and technical skills necessary to pursue a career in HIM. (Health Information Management) CNM offers two types of associate degrees, which are Electronic Health Information Informatics and Health Information Technology both are Associates of Applied Science.
