My pursuit for higher education has been quite a lengthy journey. I was not successful for my first attempt for a bachelor’s degree because I had to make personal sacrifice in order to help my folks in time of family crisis. This circumstance led me to join the military which kept me further from school. Now, I am taking the path for higher education again. This time, I am ready and more driven. It feels like a long time since the time that I decided to choose UNCW as my school to further my education. Although my transition process to UNCW went without any substantial hindrance, there are some obstacles that I had to overcome and still overcoming which may alter my intended plan for my education. My decision to attend UNCW began when I signed up for Seahawk Saturday on September of 2014. UNCW was at the top of my list for schools that I knew I wanted to visit because I have heard good things about UNCW and the city of Wilmington from my acquaintances at work and school. On that Saturday, I listen to the speeches delivered by the representatives from different UNCW offices. They covered topics including what set UNCW apart from other institutions and different programs and resources that were readily available to transfer students. Afterwards, student representatives from the school took us for a tour around campus. I enjoyed that tour; I thought the campus was aesthetically pleasing and that I would be proud to be part of this institution.
After visiting UNCW, I had
Fear and anxiety plagued my mind during this transition, however my wife and daughter kept my mind at ease. The information and instruction that was provided from the Professors at Durham Tech galvanized something deep within me. I began to strive for goals that I thought were unattainable as a naïve adolescent. Instructors encouraged me to work hard and to be persistent when it came to the immense obstacles of my course work such as giving a presentation at an honors symposium as an honors student. After countless years of self doubt and negative feelings towards education as a whole, for the first time in my life, I felt like college was an option for
What motivated me to enroll at GCU and pursue a degree in higher education is to live my dreams and to also to let my grandfather live to see his wish comes to pass. My grandfather is my biggest motivation growing up with my grandparents from I was nine months old until I migrated to the united states for college give me a great inspiration about education, my grandmother always uses to teach me how to read adult books, when I was just a third grader. She would normally say if I can not read the adults book I must read all the sign words I know and pronouns the big words in syllables. My grandmother plays the mother figure in my life during that time frame, I become a great reader and use to be the honor student in school, two years after my grandmother was admitted to a hospital to do a
I have fallen in love with UNCW after first-hand seeing it for myself last summer. I know a lot of alumni from UNCW and have heard nothing but positive things about the school, teachers, and its courses. I am interested in majoring marketing or business and UNCW excels in both of these areas for me. In addition, it provides many courses that assist me in meeting my goals for my career. I would love to attend UNCW because it is close to my hometown but also far enough to where I can be an independent. Not only do I believe the University of North Carolina Wilmington is the right fit for me and my future career but also has every aspect that I am looking for in a college. It has the perfect location, the perfect size, very affordable, and the
The National Honors Society allows students to be build and create traits that are essential in a successful adult. I truly believe that hold many of these traits and joining the National Honor Society will grant me the opportunity to expand on these traits and grow as a person. Thus far I have focus greatly on the scholarship aspect of NHS and have been dedicated to my academics. I have held my GPA above 4.0 and have always been devoted to maintaining that high level of academic success. The skills I have shown in devoting myself to my academics can be easily translated into my dedication for the other aspects of leadership, service and character. Having previously held a officer role in the National Junior Honor Society I have gained experience
The University of North Carolina Wilmington gives a welcoming and home-like feeling to all who attend. Once I step foot on campus, it reminds me of the privilege I have of staying home. It has always been the college I've wanted to attend. The small and diverse community is what keeps me here in Wilmington, North Carolina and UNCW fulfills my dreams of not leaving. I find the mixture of races and gender to be essential in a community or school. It defines a person including their culture and allows everyone to be different from one another. It proves that we can all get along and work together to create greater changes as a whole; UNCW has that variety. However, not only does the diverse environment attract me, but so does the beautiful campus.
I love how UNC Wilmington’s population of students was so diverse. I knew coming out of high school I wanted a fresh start and I wanted to make my own way into this world. I felt like UNC Wilmington was the best place for me because it was going to allow me to do just that. The diverse amount of students meant that I was going to meet so many new people that were different from the people I had known all my life. Compared to the other schools I visited, UNC Wilmington stood out to me more than the others. The whole staff was so much more welcoming and helped me really feel like I was already a part of the Seahawk family. I think the staff reflected the atmosphere of UNC Wilmington and really made me want to work hard to be accepted into the school. I am the type of person where the size of the school really matters to me. I did not want to go to a school that I knew was so large in size that what I did was not going to matter. I think the main reason why I fell in love with UNC Wilmington is the size of the school. I know that at UNC Wilmington I will be given the chance to get to know my professors and to be
This paper will explain the reasons that I want to obtain a college degree at Columbia Southern University and how I will make that happen. It will be a difficult task to accomplish but I believe that it can be done.By putting in the work and staying motivated to accomplish this goal I will be successful.
Robert Frost once wrote, “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood and I, I took the one less travelled by and that has made all the difference. As a young, educated, black man I have already chosen to take the road less travelled. Life is a journey where you stumble and fall, but I elected to not become a negative statistic. While in high school I decided to start my college education early in the pursuit of bettering my mind and proving to my ancestors that their plight is being well-respected.
Over the past year, I have completely fallen in love with my new home here at Western Carolina University. I am so proud to be a part of such an incredible community with amazing staff and students. Next year, I will be continuing my studies at Western, taking courses for my chosen major: nutrition and dietetics.
My interest in attending UNC Wilmington comes from many different reasons such as the variety of student organizations and clubs, campus location, and most importantly the different concentrations offered in the computer science major. UNC Wilmington, as suggested by friends and research I've conducted, is a great place that gives students a sense of belonging. Another factor that attracts me to UNC Wilmington is how simple it is to get involved in campus.
I am interested in attending UNCW first and foremost because they offer the Sports Medicine Program that I am interested in. I was born in WIlmington and I like the idea of going to college in my hometown to be near the beach and my family. My mom attended UNCW and is very proud of the education that she received. I have a cousin that recently graduated from UNCW, so it would be great to keep the legacy going. Growing up in Wilmington allowed me the opportunity to participate in the Little Seahawks Program as a kid, attend numerous basketball games and to participate in camps that were offered on campus. My family loved volunteering for the Leon Brogden Tournament, when it was held at UNCW. I even got to play in that tournament one year
I have many goals I hope to achieve at UMBC. While it may seem like an obvious and simple goal, my main goal is to graduate with a degree in political science. This would not only represent the most significant achievement of my life and bring much pride to my family, who have supported me throughout my educational journey, but would also allow me to gain solace in being able to accomplish what I had set out to achieve three years ago. Therefore, I’m seeking the opportunity to rewrite my past mistakes, for one year I had the opportunity to think day and night about what went wrong the first time I attended college. This one year was one of the hardest emotional years of my life; having to think back at what could have been, looking into the eyes of the people I let down, and contemplating what I left unachieved. UMBC would be the canvas where I can redraw my life, path and goals; it would be an opportunity to learn from my past and leave the bad
Throughout my life I have fought to determine what my meaning in life is. Suddenly one day I found that meaning and it was to help those who needed it the most. As a current employee in the Human Services field, being a caregiver for the mentally and intellectually disabled has made me realize what my meaning in life is. Each and every day I strive to make a difference in a person’s life by assisting them to become more independent. For instance, every night that I pull out of work I smile, because I know I have made a difference in someone’s life other than my own. It is off extreme importance to help the people who cannot assist themselves on their own.
When I was in eighth grade, I wanted to attend Northwestern University to follow in my band directors footsteps and study Music Education. Unfortunately, I encountered a number of problems freshman year. Due to these problems, I quit band, and did not see college as an attainable option so I gave up on going to college. During my Junior year, I realized that college was an something I wanted to do so I decided to do whatever it took to be ready by graduation. During my junior year, I went on a college visit to UW-Oshkosh. However, the campus didn’t impress me and I became discouraged about post high school education. Everything changed when I attended Northwestern University on a college a at the beginning of the school year. Originally,
I have seen others go back to college with two or more kids and make good grades. They were making something of themselves. I want to make something of my life. I do not want to have to worry with losing my job and finding another one without a degree. It is hard to find jobs without an education. I want to show my two young girls that it is important to get a higher education. I want them to know that going and getting a degree is very important in the world we live in this day and time. I want to show that it is possible to better yourself even with a family. My youngest has Down syndrome, and I feel it is important to show her that with obstacles you can still further your education. I know that I do not have the same obstacles she has, but I want to be an influence on her. I want to show that I had a few obstacles including two kids, a job, and a husband that
