In a world where the word “freedom” is tossed around quite liberally, it is important to understand what it is. That having been said, freedom is not something that can truly be defined, nor entirely understood. Some may argue that you can never be free, while others may argue that you are as free as you choose to be. Some will argue that freedom can be achieved in your head and is not a physical thing. With that being said, the millions of slaves who once served as essential capital to the Unites States’ economy may feel differently. Others will argue that no one can be free until death, or until they enter the gates of heaven. The more simple minded might just say that to be free is to be able to do what you want. As an American I am not free to do whatever I want. I am not one-hundred percent free, and that is a good thing. I must obey the law in return for the freedoms I am so fortunate to receive. Just as the government grants me freedoms, they can also take them away if I use them in the wrong way. It is also important that I do not interfere with anyone else's freedoms, because all people are equal, and we all deserve equal freedoms. For example, no one should have the right to impede someone's ability to worship their god because that is a freedom which all people should have. When this happens in the United States, that is when the government steps in and begins to strip freedoms from the people who chose to disrespect someone else’s. Having that it mind, what government granted freedom means to me is the ability to do and say as I please so long as I do not disobey the law or disrespect someone else’s rights. This is the contract of freedom which exists in the United States, between government and citizen, and is one which works very well when it is respected. Freedom of thought is one of the strongest, most powerful types of freedom and it exists in all people. This is one of few freedoms that can not be taken away, and that is what makes it so strong. The oppressed and imprisoned, though stripped of many freedoms, will always maintain freedom of thought, and that is often times how they get through hard times. Those who used this freedom well can change the world, such as people like Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela. These are people who, with their thoughts and ideas brought great changes to the world, and through the use of freedom of thoughts, brought many other freedoms to the people who they were speaking for. On a personal level, the freedom of thought is one in which I understand the most and have experienced the most. There was never a moment in my life where I was not expressing this freedom, and I believe that for as long as I live, I will never stop experiencing it. Freedom of thought is what makes us human, it is what makes us unique. Another feature of this freedom, that contributes to its strength, is that freedom of thought is virtually limitless. As human being we can take our thoughts and ideas as far as we want them to be taken. As a young child my imagination flourished, which is something many young children experience.
