Day 2 - I spent the begining of Friday finishing up my rain drum by putting in "channels" and the top on the box. The purpose of the channels is to make it harder for the smaller pieces to get through causing there to be a variations in the sounds. The channels look like little mountains for the smaller pieces and a square with a hole in the middle for the larger pieces. After finishing up the ocean drum I began brainstorming with Adam again and we decided that I should continue with percussion instruments. I decided on a variety of shakers that are transparents and have different lengths. I put nuts, bolts and tacks into the different shakers so they all had different sounds, and taped the ends. At the end of the day I began working on a
In the beginning, many native americans were killed, while Omaamikwe was guided by a spirit. Protecting Omaamikwe was the spirit’s task and succeeded. Then, after some time a drum came to Omaamikwe which was the big drum. Omaamikwe was instructed on all the songs and eventually the big drum society was formed. Today the big drum is a powwow drum which is very social to the people. The drum’s purpose is to bring people together at a powwow. Which is a gathering of people to celebrate their heritage. The arrival of the drum allowed people to communicate with spirits and was vital to their own spirituality. Such vitals were pleasure, healing, hunting, war, and ceremony to ensure the spirits were with them. A sound of thunder comes from the drum
Ray Bradbury is an icon to readers. Still to this day he is an author, essayist, playwright, screenwriter, lecturer, poet and visionary. Bradbury is an amazing character that has achieved amazing things throughout his life. Bradbury was born on August 22, 1920 in Waukegan, Illinois. Growing up he was very loved by his family. He had a great childhood. Bradbury attended Los Angeles High school where he contributed in many clubs. He was part of the drama club inspired to be an actor. He improved his grades and then joined the poetry club where he let his soul free and wrote about what he wanted. He joined many after school activities to follow his dreams of being a writer. Two of his teachers encouraged him
Life can bring unexpected events that individuals might not be prepared to confront. This was the case of O’Brien in the story, “On the Rainy River” from the book The Things They Carried. As an author and character O’Brien describes his experiences about the Vietnam War. In the story, he faces the conflict of whether he should or should not go to war after being drafted. He could not imagine how tough fighting must be, without knowing how to fight, and the reason for such a war. In addition, O’Brien is terrified of the idea of leaving his family, friends and everything he loves behind. He decides to run away from his responsibility with the society. However, a feeling of shame and embarrassment makes him go to war. O’Brien considers
The film, Singing In The Rain, directed by Stanely Donen and Gene Kelly, uses many themes, camera angles, and overall simple techniques to engage its audience within the movie and yet still manage to symbolize plentiful acts. The movie mainly focuses on the new era of ‘talking pictures’ and how it affected Cosmo’s career and film, The Dueling Cavalier. Within the many scenes, I chose to focus upon the famous, “ Good Morning,” scene/melody.
Although the exact origin of the bassoon is unknown (JSTOR 7-14), we do know that the earliest versions of the bassoon appeared in Italy, around the 15th century. The earliest form of the bassoon was a wooden instrument, folded in half (to reduce the vertical size of the instrument). There were many bassoon-like instruments in the late 14th/early 15th century (JSTOR 48). One example could be the low-register shawm. This instrument was a larger version of a late 14th century oboe. Even though the low-register shawm was folded, it was still more like an oboe than it was a bassoon. However, the dulcian had the most bassoon-like qualities. It was a one piece instrument, with a folded bore and a metal bocal. Like the bassoon, the dulcian had six
Currently Colorado prohibits the collection of water runoff, except for certain cases where permission is granted, and how you get permission is still a mystery. Otherwise you cannot collect rain water runoff even in small amounts for personal use. Nevada has some very vague language in their regulations that leads many, if not most, to believe it is illegal.
Throughout Ray Bradbury’s short story ‘There Will Come Soft Rains’ Bradbury expressed themes such as the automation and technology advancement along with nature prevailing and outlasting humanity. These themes were presented to me through the setting, characterisation, and symbolism. Automation and technology advancement was shown through setting, where the house is set in the future of Allendale. The house can perform many tasks that a human character can do; the house is able to speak poetry and even seems to be able to express all emotions. The house was threatened by fire; it screamed “Fire!”
Courage is an important skill in life that can take time to build up but will benefit you and your decisions in life. Risks are decisions you make that can have good or bad outcomes, investing in certain stocks can be high risk high reward or low risk low reward based on how you want to do it. Part of being courageous is taking the risks that others won’t, to push forward and find success. The short story “The Terror” by Junot Dias demonstrates that courage is taking risks others won't with the character change of the narrator throughout the story. This is shown when after the narrator gets jumped by 3 brothers and being scared of them for years he states “I hated these brothers from the bottom of my heart, but even more than them, I hated
The short story “On The Rainy River” is written through the perspective of O’Brien in present day and as a young faced with a draft notice for Vietnam War. In “On The Rainy River,” O’brien portrays the importance of bravery in an individual through the use of symbolism, powerful tone, and reflective point of view.
Our seven piece kit is being sold at the same price as those offered by Pearl and Tama, while our eight piece kit is $100 cheaper than Tama’s eight piece kit. Ours is $50 more expensive than Pearl’s eight piece kit; however we feel our product to be vastly superior to theirs, and therefore do not anticipate this slight difference as being problematic. We will also be offering out 100 kits initially to established artists as endorsements. These kits will be distributed, free of charge, to 42 pre-selected musicians, in the hope that by being used by these artists, other musicians who are influenced by these drummers will be eager to also purchase a kit.
In “There Will Come Soft Rains” Ray Bradbury suggests that technology is very destructive and dehumanizing. Bradbury shows this through talking about a house in the year 2026 that does everything for the humans that live in it. The house makes their food, cleans the dishes, cleans the house, and even reads to them. To some people this may sound like a good thing, but Bradburry shows how the house is not a human and it just is not the same. These are things people are meant to do and can have some meaning. Having a house doing nearly everything for you truly is dehumanizing. When he describes the houses jobs he makes them sound useless. The movements are useless because there are no people in the house, due to what Bradbury suggests was an atomic bomb by writing that the house was the only one not destroyed in a whole city, and there was a green radioactive glow throughout the city. Another way bradbury showed the house was destructive was when
In Tim O’Brien’s fictional narrative “On the Rainy River,” the narrator faces the dilemma of avoiding the draft or submitting and going to Vietnam, a common predicament that many men faced after receiving draft cards for the Vietnam War. O’Brien displays the thought process of the narrator as he makes a decision, and near the beginning, the narrator describes certain qualities that he believes make him “too good for [that] war”(2). He lists off achievements like “president of the student body” and “full-ride scholarship,” arguing for the idea that he is “above” going to war(O’Brien 2). Through explaining what the narrator believes to be superior traits, the reader might begin to ask, “What types of people actually went to the war?” If the narrator feels that he was above going to Vietnam, there must be some preconceived notion of who was expected to serve. After seeing how the narrator reacted to his call to battle, a question is left of whether the draft was fair in relation to social classes.
Archetypes are defined as “a typical character, an action or a situation that seems to represent such universal patterns of human nature.” (“Archetype”) The short story “On the Rainy River” by Tim O’Brien is about the internal struggle and the journey he faces after he is drafted to serve the army. The classical hero’s journey archetype is similar to Tim O’Brien’s journey in his short story, “On the Rainy River,” with the exception of the arc length and depth of transformation.
Many countries are facing the issue of immigration, and the U.S has been trying to create a way to end this issue for many years now. Many politicians have put together thoughts , that seem as if they would work, however they do not. Immigrants are probably intimidated by the long process and the hourly long test, and feel that it would be impossible to become a U.S. citizen. Not only is the process long, but you have to be qualified in order to take the test. Qualifying for test isn't always easy, especially if you are not financially stable. Therefore, they choose the easy route, and immigrate illegally so that they do not have to wait, and go through the long process. To help solve this problem, the amount of time it takes to become a U.S citizen should be reduced, and take only axproximately 1-2 years. This will help create a fast and efficient way to make the visa process faster, so people are not waiting long years to see their family and friends. In addition, the government should create better job programs for non-U.S citizens because they think the United States is a place for opportunities, and a better life.
Gut microbiota represents a complex community in human intestines that aids in sustaining a dynamic metabolic ecological equilibrium, thus any changes in those beneficial bacteria (which may be sparked by the infection, illness, drugs and/or stress) have the propensity to substantially affect the health of individuals. It has been shown that these microorganisms are capable of producing and conveying various neuroactive substances such as gamma-aminobutyric acid and serotonin. The gut-brain axis is a quite novel term used to describe the communication between the central and the enteric nervous system, linking emotional and cognitive centres of the brain with peripheral intestinal functions. Recent advances in research have described the importance of gut microbiota in influencing these interactions, and it has been shown that microorganisms can affect the development and function of the central nervous system via the aforementioned gut-brain axis.
