I have loved writing since I was in fourth grade. I wrote a lot of sci-fi fictional stories for my brother and sister about magicians and princesses. As I have aged, my mother has pushed me when it comes to writing--she tries to make me write when I do not feel inspired, and wants me to send my writing to publishing even though I do not want to be a published author. After what seems like forever of this, I lost my will to write entirely, for fun, that is. I felt like every time I wrote I was being critiqued and it was not fun anymore. This English 101 class helped me rekindle my flame and passion for writing. I have learned a lot during this course, such as my MLA formatting was incorrect. I was homeschooled through a really strict curriculum, and yet they never explained to me that I was writing MLA style incorrectly. Sadly, I just now realized this error and a majority of my papers have an incorrect format. I realized this in my research paper instruction paper, where the MLA format was explained. This class also taught me to take criticism when it comes to my writing. One of the worst things for me is when someone nitpicks at my work and finds everything wrong with it. I am thankful my peers did not do this when we had peer reviews, instead they kindly showed me ways of improving my work that was quite helpful. I learned to take criticism and realized that not all criticism is harsh, and criticism is needed to become a better writer. I feel as though my
People have many ways that they write. Some do a process of doing drafts so they can look through, edit and make the paper better. Others will just write a paper and turn it in. My process consist of starting with making a thesis. Then from the thesis I create the topic sentences for the topic at hand. The best way to write the essay in a good format and have good detail in the writing I would write a paragraph a day. By doing that process it allows me to get what is needed out on the paper so none of the paragraphs are mixing content and making the paragraphs less structured. This process not only makes writing essays less stressful while also getting the paper done quickly.
I have been practicing on how to improve my writing over the past few weeks, which has taught me a great deal about writing. My teacher would like me to evaluate and explain my strengths and weaknesses in my own writing. This evaluation is in between my two essays. One on my own and another with my teacher's help. I have strengths and weakness in my introduction, body paragraphs ,and my conclusion.
We are already midway through the first quarter of my last year as a high school student. I find it hard to completely grasp how quickly this year is passing and yet I feel like we've already accomplished so much.
As a student entering the 10th grade my essay writing abilities were questionable at best. However over the course of my sophomore year I acquired new skills and techniques to construct and write essays. In some cases this class broadened my abilities already in place and in others it constructed new abilities to help strengthen others. All in all I am a better writer than when I entered my sophomore year. Despite all the positive changes to my writing style that have occurred over the past year some parts of my writing style require more effort to come to par with other parts of my writing style. As a writer over the past year I have reinforced my arguments well, and learned to develop a thesis better than I had, however I require more work
To effectively revise and edit my research paper, I read it carefully, as I played the reader`s role instead of that of a writer. In addition, I used a number of strategies to effectively revise and edit my research paper. First, I read my paper aloud as I listened for errors. After carefully listening, I was able to identify and correct errors in my writing, including grammar, incorrect sentence structure, incomplete ideas, and incorrect punctuation. While reading, I could stop and rectify the mistake at the point where I could note it. In addition, I read each sentence at a time so that I could digest the structure and identify any error. Prior to the reading, I noted down the common errors I usually commit while writing such as the omission
Throughout my first semester at the University of Portland, the quality of my writing progressively increased. My English 112 class contained many different activities that contributed to helping me become a better writer. Informal writing assignments, class discussions, peer review sessions and the writing center were just some of the resources available to me that helped progress not only my writing ability but my overall reading & writing analysis skills as well. Not only did I make new relationships with my peers, these relationships also helped me understand the content more thoroughly, work out any problems that I had with my ideas, and encourage me to be more social among my fellow classmates as well. Nearing the end of this
Throughout my years in writing and taking English courses I have always been a faulty writer and never have been strong in this aspect. Truthfully my writing was the same until I came to college and took English 104 with Professor Horjus. Horjus had taught me things about myself and my writing that I never gave my full attention too and explaining my thoughts. Professor Horjus had started off class on making us say things we could work on after turning in an essay and feel we lacked or felt very strongly about. Being able to talk about the lack of my writing skill or even the strong aspects in my writing let me see that everything teachers have taught me in the past has honestly not really helped. College English has defiantly shined a new light on writing for me.
As a student enrolled in all Honors English courses throughout my high school career, my teachers followed a relatively challenging curriculum. Every year, I was expected to write every one of the following types of texts at least one: argumentative, analysis and narrative. I have always considered English to be my best subject because not only was I enticed by it, but I was also excelled at it. Below, I will reflect on a few of the most honorable pieces of writing from my four years of high school. I will highlight my strengths, weaknesses and areas of improvement from each text as I have progressed a writer.
I learned from the teacher assessment about my writing that ideas and examples lack detail. Because of this, my writing was weakly supported my main ideas, and let make readers hardly understand what am I write about. Also, my writing did not have adjectives and adverbs that make readers boring and tired. I could not write long writing. Due to some word choice, word form, and sentence structure issues, the clarity of meaning in my paragraph is negatively affected. I really need to improve my writing in this semester because the hardest one in English is writing and I have many problems in my writing. I will read whatever I can get my hands on. I will not discriminate novels, essays, nonfiction basically anything. I believe that my writing
Reading page after page so far this semester there has been a few things that has really opened up my eyes. The first would be to be really detailed about my writing and not just throwing it together; before I wouldn’t think about what I was going to write and I would just start typing, whatever I came up with I turned it in. I never once revised a paper or reread my papers because truthfully I didn’t really care I just wanted to be done with the assignment. Another thing that stood out a lot to me was the free write strategy. It is my personal favorite now, it really helps you get all your thoughts out but not worry about the really important things. After I get all my thoughts out I can just go back to add more to details to the paper.
Over the course of the semester, we have studied a variety of styles of writing, from the perspective paper to the
I have been a student at The University of Texas at San Antonio for only a semester, but over the course of my stay I have learned and grown more than I ever thought I could. This writing course has taught me much more than just grammar and writing a bunch of essays. I have learned to express myself, how to think about topics by myself, and how to research innovative ideas I don’t know. As a biology major I’ve always loved math and science, but throughout the semester I have learned the importance of literature and language in everything we do. This course will later help me in my career and throughout life. Throughout this semester of writing composition, I have excelled at writing thesis statements, choosing my own essay topic and constructing background paragraphs, but I struggled with grammar, citations, and paragraph structure.
If I were to describe my writing style in one word it would be " ". I began to realize this the latter half of my sophomore year of high school. I was fortunate enough to have an excellent English department with supportive teachers throughout my four years at school. Each teacher I learned from was great at giving constructive feedback and always made me feel valued as a writer. I might not have been the best but throughout the different classes I took, I believe skills I have picked up along the way have made me a better writer. There's a point some people hit where writing doesn't feel like a chore, but rather they look forward to. I come from a family of readers as well as writers, and I like to believe they go hand-in-hand. I think that's why I looked forward to summer reading assignments and the essays that accompanied them. It became a way for me to reflect on the book I had just read, I got a better understanding of it when I needed to describe my favorite chapter or explain the plot.
As an English 100 student, I have learned that I am not as good at writing as I thought I was. As the year has progressed, the assignments seem to have become more tedious. I have also not taken the necessary steps to create a good essay as I did on my first few assignments. In my first essay, I carefully planned my essay and made sure that I actually understood what was being asked of me. As the essays were assigned in rapid succession, I became more careless. Due to this, my essay scores have dropped significantly. My first essay assigned in English 100 was, MICKY D. This essay is an observational essay that explained how my workplace, McDonald’s, is considered a discourse community. My initial grade on this essay was a 90%. The next assigned essay was a literary narrative essay called “How I Got These Scars.” This essay was about me learning how to ride my first “big kid bike”. This essay was very difficult because I was having trouble remembering my past experience of learning how to ride a bike. The memories were very vague and it is difficult for me to be creative enough to add fictitious statements to the essay. The grade for this essay was an 89% before revisions. My final essay was over an informative essay called, The Graft. The Graft is about my experiences with the processes that lead up to me getting my knee cartilage graft. This essay was poorly executed which lead to an initial grade of 73%. My grades have significantly dropped due to a decrease in effort and
As writing my piece, I there were definite challenges and successes. These challenges and successful moments reminded me in my own journey as a student writer to an adult writer. In working with a group, I also found definitive successes and challenges. However, writing is an ever changing and growing craft and this process was part of my personal journey as both a teacher and a student.
