In my portfolio I will be including my first essay and second essay that I did for this class. I am most proud of these essays not because I took my time on them but I know that I fixed what was asked and made a lot of improvements on them. I believe I did meet the contract agreement that we signed at the beginning of the quarter. Although, I did miss some days of class, more than I expected, but even after that I feel like I kept up with my work in and outside of the classroom and what was required. I enjoyed this class a lot because I was able to learn a lot about myself as a learner and was able to work on my study habits. I learned a lot about how to read properly and how reading aloud truly helps you as a writer and learner. I also became better at being able to correct others essays without feeling guilty of what I was saying. At first I felt like I wasn’t going to be able to put as much time as I wanted in my outside of class work. But over the course, I learned that I had to make it a priority and didn’t have any other choice. I had to make it work with my job schedule and use my time very wisely, which at first wasn’t easy because I wasn’t really good at that. These past ten weeks, say that I’m still working on my study/ work habits. Recording my labor hours really helped me keep track of the fact the amount of hours I should be putting in time into my study time. I learned that the easiest things are the biggest distractions to me. I also learned that I needed to
Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe
I learned a lot in this class during the semester. The first project was our learning narrative, it was not what I was expecting from a writing class. I expected we would be writing a many formal essays in MLA format with lots of sources and research. The first essay being a creative writing project was unexpected. At first writing a narrative from my personal experience was difficult for me. I had not written anything besides formal essays since high school. Writing something that was creative and expressive was an adjustment. After a few days of writing I began to really enjoy my learning narrative. I liked being able to express myself and my own experiences and share them with others.
When I started English 203, I was not a good writer. I have never been the best writer. I could not remember all of the rules, where commas go, and how to correctly use a semi-colon. I did not remember not to use the word you in professional writing or whether the period went before or after quotation marks. But, I think this semester in English I have actually started to pick up the correct way to use quotations, commas, how to avoid contractions, and how to avoid banned words. It took some time but, I feel like I have learned more in the past 16 weeks of English than I have in the past 14 years of school. One of the most valuable writing skills I learned was how to write a review on an article and not
Looking back over the semester and pondering all that I’ve learned is a bit of a shock. Included in my portfolio are two papers that I have revised and added to. The revision process is not an easy one for me to complete. A perfectionist with time limitations, is not an easy balance for me to maintain, so while my papers are never perfect, I do try to be thorough when completing an assignment. The variety of topics covered in this class are vast and have added an innumerable amount of success to my writing skills that cross over into daily life as well as my other classes. Friendships that I didn’t have prior to this class are an added bonus that I was not counting on.
People have many ways that they write. Some do a process of doing drafts so they can look through, edit and make the paper better. Others will just write a paper and turn it in. My process consist of starting with making a thesis. Then from the thesis I create the topic sentences for the topic at hand. The best way to write the essay in a good format and have good detail in the writing I would write a paragraph a day. By doing that process it allows me to get what is needed out on the paper so none of the paragraphs are mixing content and making the paragraphs less structured. This process not only makes writing essays less stressful while also getting the paper done quickly.
I made the decision to better my study habits, and I stop doing the item on my not-to-do list. This has been immensely beneficial; I have gotten so much more done than
I came into this class expecting to fly through it to complete the necessary credits for college. I got instead was an education through writing that will help me further myself in my future career choices. I wish that I had only worked harder on the essays I was given to write to help my grades and future even more. I valued the lessons and instruction on the different forms of essays that came from attending this class. My next step is to continue that path that was made possible with the skills that I have acquired from this course.
In conclusion, throughout English 101 I have learned a lot about myself and my writing. Being able to express myself in my memoir, and being able to learn more about my writing process throughout my profile has taught me so much. Overall, the portfolio system proves to be a very effective way to organize all of your writing and reflect on the quarter. Suggestions for the future would be to spread out the essays a little bit more. Having the profile, reflective essay, and final portfolio all due very close to each other was stressful. However, for the most part English 101 was
This is my English Composition portfolio, and it contains all the research and papers I worked on during the semester. They're my goals and comments on how i felt I performed. The topic proposals I had this semester were very educztional and interesting to me. My first paper was Social Media's impact on Cyberbullying, this was an interesting topics because it's something I always had in the back of my mind. The next couple papers having to do with field research were more group based and not individual, so I felt like my first paper was strictly about my opinion.
My experience throughout this class as a writer has been remotely good. I have learned many new ways about how to write an essay because one of my strengths is having a strong memory of the topic and another strength I have in writing is that I am much more experienced on how to describe a subject in great detail and because of this I know what I am capable of doing. I unfortunately still have some weaknesses in writing such as, procrastinating on starting the actual working process and because of this I start to panic on not getting done in time. Over all my writing skills throughout the class has not been what I expected but I did learn more about how to properly write an essay, which will help me out more later on in my future classes.
As I look back on my writing portfolio, I realize in all my first drafts I make numerous mistakes. I would like to believe that my errors became more complex mistakes but I know one of my consistent mistakes is with indefinite and definite articles. With the first couple of letters I had very few definite articles and by the end I had too many. However, I do think that as my writings progressed I tried to write about more complexly. I feel more confident in my writing since I have had to continually practice. Overall, I believe because I tried to write with more complex Arabic grammar, I had more mistakes from my attempts. Yet I am glad I tried to use difficult grammar because it has taught me how to correctly phrase sentences in Arabic.
During this semester, I have learned a great deal about my own writing, and writing in general. One of the main takeaways from this course for me was how to break down the intricate process of writing papers. In addition, I developed viable skills regarding going into more in-depth detail during each step of the writing process. I enjoyed having the freedom to write about a topic that I was able to choose. This allowed me to research and write about something that actually interested me immensely. Having to work with one topic for the entire semester taught me how to find reliable resources and how to pick out the essential research from each article.
When I first started the class I was struggling a lot. Since English is my second language, I had many stressful moments that made me think about dropping my classes. But when I thought about my future, I just kept studying even harder, waiting for my performance to improve. As a result, I felt like every time I wrote an essay, it got easier, which tells me that I’m on the right path. In addition, this class has helped me improve my grammar, taught me an important life lesson about sticking on my goal and helped me to enhance my computer skills
Writing is way that we can express ourselves, it is a way to interface ideas and thoughts and to prove a point. Throughout my writing experience or process I have struggled with writing especially using details or really expressing myself my work. In this course Facts & Fiction: Portraits in World Art I expect to gain more knowledge on how to write a perfect essay, story, letter, and assignment. I expect to learn new genres and rhetorical situations. I also think my writing will improve academically and I will develop my skills in writing. Also taking my writing to a different point of view, level, and writing something different rather than the usual. I look forward to getting feedback from my peers and learning their thoughts on my writing and how they can help me improve.
During the last month of the course, I was given the opportunity to go back over my essays and revise them. I was also asked to make a digital portfolio to display my final drafts. After careful review of the essays and feedback from my instructor, I chose to rewrite the essays. I knew that my entire class could see the work I had done, once the essays were posted into my portfolio. This pushed me to rewrite my essays to the best of my ability. When I completed the essays, I felt good about the work that I had done and I was more confident about my writing ability. I then began to work on my portfolio that would display my journey through
