As I reflect on the past five weeks I have discovered there is more to learning than I originally perceived. The term learning, to me, meant receiving new information, retaining it, and being able to apply this new knowledge in any everyday situation. While this definition still holds true, I have learned that there is much more to learning. For instance, learning is not a cookie cutter, one size fits all ability. Everyone learns at their own pace and in their own way, this is called our Learning Patterns. Your personal learning patterns are made up of your use of sequence, precision, technical reasoning, and confluence. There are Dynamic, Strong-Willed and Bridge learners, each having their own characteristics. Dynamic learners use at least one pattern in the use first range, other patterns are a combination of avoid of use as needed. Strong-Willed learners use at least three patterns at the use first level and Bridge learners neither avoid nor use any pattern first. Everyone has their own unique pattern that can be FIT for any situation. FIT is an acronym for Forge, Intensify, and Tether. If you avoid using a specific learning pattern it must be forged in order to strengthen your ability to call upon said pattern when needed. When a pattern is used as needed, you may need to intensify the use if an assignment calls for the use of a certain pattern, more so than you are accustomed to. Tethering your use of a pattern is needed when you use a specific pattern first, and such
Another way is knowing how to construct patterns help with learning and storing new information. According to Willis, “Once you become “brain wise,” you know how to seek and construct patterns of new information that match the way your brain most successfully stores information.” People know the importance of taking time think about what strategies helped them succeed. Another way is social, emotion, and academic intelligence is within every person’s control. With
After learning the different learning patterns, I realized that many things can be classified and grouped simply by finding the pattern. In other words, we never really realize there are patterns in our actions and everyday processes until they are titled and classified. The thinking and learning process is an amazing thing and knowing in what order we perform these operations can help us to accomplish goals more realistically, knowing our capabilities and realistic abilities will enable us to both learn more efficiently as well as expand our mind and try to utilize every aspect of the learning process and strengthen our
We all learn in diverse ways, inclined by the combination of our past educational experiences, study practices and personal approach to particular tasks. This can be designated as our learning style, defined as ‘particular ways of gathering, processing and storing information and experiences’ (Cuthbert, P.F., 2005).
I always read and follow all directions prior to starting any of my work. I tether my work because I have enough time to check the work at the end. My precision pattern is also in the use first level. I take pride in never waiting until the last minute to do my assignments. I tether my work in recognizing that it will not be perfect. I have realized that I think of something similar related to understand some assignments. I avoid using my technical reasoning by forging this pattern, I have learned to make the topic find a purpose in writing my discussions. I am one of those as needed confluence users. During the class readings, I would intensify my readings to stay on task. I honestly just went with the flow of what was being asked to
I looked up stephen king sayings and this one is trying to say is we all have demands and sometimes they win. I think that is true because i know people who have not made the best disonions ever but they are not bad people. I have not made the best decisions ever I ether.
Precise is my use first, I feel this learning pattern is the one I use the most, the reason being I always have task to complete and I will not quit until it is accurate and correct, I will go over and over it again until I feel it is what is required of me to do. When a new task is brought to me I need to know all the details, what do you want me to do, how do you want it represented, when do you want it done, why is it required to do it. Once you give me all the details and I have asked a hundred questions- because I will and I feel comfortable
I chose to do my analysis on my fiancé Kentrall. Anyone that knows him can easily point out his learning pattern. According to the LCI test he is a strong-willed learner. His use first learning patterns are confluence, Technical reasoning, and precision. He uses sequence as needed. We are definitely opposites, he thinks that he can fix anything without reading the instructions. Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not.
As a white Australian with Anglo-Saxon heritage, I truly believed that I had no race, ethnicity or culture. These were only things that people of colour and foreign languages had. In the first tutorial I could not articulate whom I was, where I had come from or why I didn’t completely understand anyone who was not as I was. I have no connection with religion or spiritual matters making it extremely difficult to understand the impact of what happened when there was a culture here in Australia before white culture dispossessed them. My life previous to being asked the question ‘Who am I?’ I would have responded saying I was ‘normal’. Even writing this reflection was difficult to begin because I have never really
After completing the Discovery Wheel and the Learning Style Inventory assignments which are presented by the text book Becoming a Master Student (Ellis, 2006, pp. 78-82), I discovered that I should trust my instinct now more than ever. I’ve always felt most confident when I had a chance to implement my knowledge and understanding in a lab or a real life setting. I learned that facts, figures, and examples are important parts in the way I learn. Breaking something down into smaller units and examining these units individually is something I enjoy doing, but that is not my preferred learning style.
Education benefits individual mentally, emotionally and physically by placing them in better place than they were previously before. Everybody would agree that learning something new would take place throughout the life. Learning style defined as "A term that describes the variations among learners in using one or more senses to understand, organize, and retain experience" (Reid, 1987, p. 89). Furthermore, Felder and Henriques (1995, p. 21) explained learning styles as "the ways in which an individual characteristically acquires, retains and retrieves information". However, different learners possess different characteristics and different preferred learning styles to perceive, process, take in and understand information.
Being able to take in the information that is presented and being able to apply it is a crucial tool that is needed in order to be successful. One of the assignments that we were given in ENGR 1000 was that we were tasked to see what type of learner we were. Everyone has their own unique way of learning and I myself feel that I am more of a visual learner than verbal. There are eight different characteristics on a scale from one to ten which means there can be fifty thousand and four hundred different possibilities. This is why it is important to know and understand what type of learner you are because you are only one of that fifty thousand and four hundred. You could and are very likely spinning your wheels trying to learn things the wrong way if you truly don’t understand how you learn. I can read a book cover to cover and at the end, sometimes I could not tell you what I have just read. After taking that survey I was surprised at how much I was heavily leaning only on visual and not verbal. Just this one alone was putting me at a disadvantage in my education because I was only really taking in half of what I could be. I have started to rely different learning styles so that I can be more we
The critical reading process drew me back to basics by redirecting my use of Sequence and Precision learning patterns to become the predominant patterns used. Sequence learning pattern was needed in the completion of discussions; I needed to focus, not only on discussions but completing all my work and submitting it on time.
Personal learning styles are highly complex and unique to specific individuals. It is often difficult to pinpoint an exact learning style. Though there are different categories, we often fine tune them to our own abilities. By examining our traits and tendencies we create a clearer understanding of how we process and learn information. With careful review, I have developed a specific analysis of my learning characteristics, including an evaluation of skill levels. Based on what I have recently learned and know from experience, I have also devised a structured plan for improvement of time management and study skills.
Learning is a multifaceted perception unique to each individual. In looking to address the intricacies of learning, there have been a multitude of learning theories established over the centuries. To this day new theories are developed and traditional theories continue to be developed and expanded upon. (Swinburne Online, 2016)
These twelve principles are not intended to be comprehensive, but to offer participants the ability to explore implications in an open, reflective way. In addition to the twelve principles for learning there are specific conditions for complex learning to take place in the classroom, according to Caine and Caine, these conditions help in the overall system of brain-based learning. First of all, students should feel a relaxed
