My research project is on Machinal by Sophie Treadwell. I will be focusing on the struggles that the Young Woman faces in the play, and how her behavior relates to mental illnesses. My approach is to create a scenario where half of the play seems like it is not real. I want to make the audience really think about what is real and what is being made up in the Young Woman’s mind.
I will bring more awareness to the struggles that people with mental illness have to deal with to the theatre stage. There will still be a full cast for the play but I want all of the characters except for the Young Woman to fall into a trap door after some of their lines, instead of walking off of the stage. I will also add light fog to make the stage less clear. This will help make it more obvious that the Young Woman cannot separate what is actually happening and what is apart of her imaginary life. I have selected this specific research focus because I think that it will be interesting to see how changing one aspect of a play changes the entire theme.
Most women during the 1920s were just finding their own identity, while others were still stuck doing what they were told to do. Being forced to act and think a certain way has reportedly been the cause of mental health problems in the past. Women can be dehumanized by their parents and their husband’s jobs according to Sara Freeman. Women are told by their parents and husbands how to act, what to think, what to wear, and what they are allowed
