My Sister’s Keeper, written by Jodi Picout tells the story about a young girl named Anna, who is the product of preimplantation genetic diagnosis and is born for the main purpose of being an organ donor for her older sister Kate. This novel gives us a brief interpretation of how cloning can have a negative impact into our society and in ourselves. Cloning may have succeeded during 1996 with the first cloned mammal, but can we take the risk today? Even though some people think cloning is an advanced method to seek answers in many fields of science, it can cause lack of diversity within species, increase the chance of a malpractice, and it is a procedure with ethical concerns. However, in order to understand cloning, we must know the procedure of it. Cloning is the creation of a genetic copy of a sequence of DNA of an organism. In the article, “Pros and Cons of Reproductive Cloning” by Crystal Lombardo, it states: “Because the reproductive cloning process involves the direct duplication of exact cells, the practice would limit the amount of diversity and variation within the human race.” This could prevent humanity from being able to adapt to any changing circumstances. Imagine living in a world where your relatives and strangers looks the same as you, and eventually died the same way at the same time. The lack of genetic diversity could lead to a “genetic bottleneck” (Should Endangered Animals Be Cloned?). This means that if the survivor members in a species all have the same genetic code, the breed will never adapt in its changing environment. Animal species should be ready for any environmental changes which mean cloning would not help at all because the whole group could be extinct.
