For my student leader interview, I interviewed Cordaro (Cord) Murry-H. He is a junior here at the University of Toledo and someone I personally look up for multiple reasons. Cord gives off a vibe that just says, “Hey! I’m a natural leader!” It makes band flow easier when he gives instructions and it also makes him much more approachable than the head director. Cord is what I imagine a leader who is dedicated to their followers looks like.
Cord is highly involved in both the Rocket Marching Band and in his fraternity, Triangle. For the Rocket Marching Band, Cord was a squad leader in the fall of 2015 and is now the Piccolo section leader. As a squad leader, Cord ensured that those around him knew the marching drill so that practice ran smoothly. He also assisted underclassmen with learning traditions about the Rocket Marching Band. As the piccolo section leader, Cord gives advice and instructions to the help the piccolo section get through practices and performances. He is also our voice and our connection to the drum majors and directors. Cord gained his positions of leadership in the Rocket Marching band through an application and an interview process with the directors. In his fraternity, Triangle, Cord has assumed many positions throughout his time with the fraternity. Cord began his leadership journey for Triangle as the treasurer during the spring and summer semesters of 2016. As treasurer, he collected dues, paid bills, and set up fundraisers for the fraternity.

Once selected as an officer to lead the 2016-2017 Big “D” Marching Band Auxiliary Drill Team, I will work hard on paving the path to leave a mark of dancers who are respectful, disciplined and perform higher than their best.
What comes to mind when you hear the word leader? Martin Luther King, Jr., John F. Kennedy? According to Webster's Dictionary, a leader is "one who leads." After participating in the Leadership Program, I have learned that a leader is hard to summarize.
It can come from being in charge in a school project for language arts literacy or running a fundraiser to help raise awareness to a disease. They take charge in something with an effective sense and choose to embrace their acts of self assessment. What their group or themselves is good at,their weaknesses and strengths.Once they figure that out, everything goes smoothly.Even from a project once the topic is clearly explained and managed by the leader there is no problem getting across from the littlest of obstacles. True acts of leadership here in Terence C Reilly, is not being carried out by bad influences. They have a good ethic of relations with other classmates and prove to work collaboratively.Although teamwork and cooperation is part of a leadership, it all leads up to an effective communication within others.Students have different leadership skills, but never do it in a bad way. They are integrated and not even in schoolwork do they have to be leaders. You can hall moniter and you’re the leader of the hallway or perhaps setting up a new fundriser you had created. You are managaing something for
The Leader that I chose to observe was Jacob Orgel, the president of Pi Kappa Alpha at the University of Maryland. I chose to observe Jacob because of the role he has played leading Pi Kappa Alpha back on campus at the University of Maryland. In doing so, Jacob had to meet with countless IFC officials as well as individuals from PIKE nationals in order get chartered. In order for our fraternity to be founded, Jacob and a couple other founding fathers needed to recruit men who shared the same vision and values that Jacob and Pike have installed in this Fraternity. Additionally, Jacob was able to recruit a diverse group of men because he knew that inclusiveness was very important to having a well -rounded fraternity. Furthermore, Jacob gave all the members a feeling of citizenship and brought the members together to work for a common goal. Not only does Jacob display signs of inclusiveness he also shows signs of empowerment. While observing Jacob at chapter meetings, I realized that he is always open to other’s opinions. Jacob is a very hands on guy but is always encouraging others to serve on different committees within the fraternity. Likewise, Jacob always lets others speak at chapter meetings and values their contribution. Jacob is able to show true leadership because he is constantly looking for growth and development within the fraternity. Another example of Jacob empowering others is at chapter meetings when a decision needs to be made there is always a vote among all
I think that if you were to ask my close friends or family, they would say that I am a natural leader and hardworking. As the captain of my lacrosse team, I am a leader on the field. In this position even though I strive to be the best I can, I find it more rewarding to watch my team succeed and improve above myself. I’m very passionate about motivating my team mates to be better and not just bossing them around. You can also find me as a leader of the Student Council at my school. Here I have been in charge of and organized countless events like the CB East’s annual Homecoming. This example also goes to show how hard working I am. I take these school events very seriously and I want every student to have a great time; I stay after school for
A leader is someone who leads a group, organization, or country. I believe an effective leader is confident, unbiased, open to new ideas, and will be organized so they can run the group effectively. What good would a leader do if they’re always missing due dates, if they’re scared of people, or don’t know what they’re doing? You don’t want an unqualified leader because then we won’t be successful in whatever we decide to do this year. I am all of these qualities that make a great leader, plus I have some experience from NJHS. I am a very organized and precise person, meaning everything will be in its place, everything will meet deadlines, and events will be planned in advance and thoroughly thought through. Im very confident in what I do,
In the two years I've spent in high school band, I've learned that the best leaders are the ones who do whatever needed to help the whole band succeed. Whether that be arriving at 6 in the morning to help your section with marching and music, or just spending time with them at football games and section parties. A great leader is someone who knows not only their own strengths and weaknesses, but the organization's as well. The best leaders can also fully differentiate when it is time to work and when it is time to have fun.
Being a leader is not considered a job or position. Becoming a leader is not a talent, job or position. Although, leadership can be rewarding and difficult at the same time. In today’s society, “the kind of leadership necessary to move social movements forward is very different from the type of leadership required in a military setting, especially on the battlefield. A more sharpened focus on leadership processes versus individual leader traits and behaviors deepens our understanding of the complexities and interactive nature of leadership” (Komives, Lucas and McMahon 2013, 46). My goal is to understand how to face the complexities in life as a leader to communities, universities, organizations, the workplace and the world. As a leader,
As a secretary for the Turlock FFA chapter, I consider myself a leader. I have a taken a leadership position that has expanded my knowledge of how a leader should be and how to take responsibility. I have influenced other members from my school to participate in events and attend meetings. I have shown them what I learned and how I applied it to my everyday life. I also learned that I can improve and better myself from trying an experience that would take me out of my comfort zone. It was a little challenging adapting and keeping up with the events and
What is a leader? Many people can not answer that question without thinking about it for a few minutes first. Up until this assignment, it would have taken forever Whether it’s an inspirational singer, president, wrestler, cook, etc. it’s someone who motivates another, someone who people look up to, and someone who in some eyes is amazing. Selena Quintanilla-Perez, John Cena, and Martin Luther King are examples of leaders.
As an introvert, I never believed that leadership would be my cup of tea. Quiet, observant, soft-spoken. Those are not the traits of a leader...or so I thought. Then, I journeyed to Europe for 20 days with People to People to become a Student Ambassador. Meeting a Parliament member in England and representing The United States of America to a group of German students opened my eyes to the world of leadership and showed me how capable of leading I truly was. Entering my sophomore year of high school, I was selected to be a National Honor Society Member, the Vice President of the Beta Club, and a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. While all of the leadership positions I’ve experienced have been extraordinary and eye opening, the most significant
I found each character a stereotype of a leader learned thus far, but the most interesting for me was that of Barry Fife. Barry Fife, who is the president of the Australian Dancing Federation demonstrates a leader frantically holding on to his status with, position power. He demonstrates this by use of title, reward, coercive and information power. (Northhouse, 2016 p 11-12) An illustration of this is when Fife disqualifies of Scott and his partner when he shows
What truly defines a model leader? Is it something that showed exceptional courage in a time others hid away? Or is it someone who consistently leads time after time, no matter the circumstances? These are interesting questions that if the idea of leader exists these questions will always be asked. There is a popular quote from the movie Sandlot said by Babe Ruth “Heroes get remembered, legends never die” (Ruth). The prior quote can be switched around to show the importance of leaders and that is “Bosses get remembered, leaders never die.” This quote is evident in the leader that I selected, seeing the impact they made two hundred plus years ago, that is still seen every day we wake up.
Determination, courage, and confidence are all characteristics needed to be a good leader. The principal player in a music group is considered to be a leader. Even bands need leaders, if we didn’t have leaders where would we be today? John Quincy Adams once said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” A good leader is liked by the people, has power, and produces followers. When there is an unwillingness to make things happen, to take the initiative and accept responsibility; this is when a leader emerges. Leaders develop through drive, creativity, and devotion.
