For my vanitas collage I selected a variety of images that spoke to me personally. Instead of doing an old fashion collage with scissors and glue. I decided to used a collage maker online, which really helped me in putting the images together to portray a meaningful meaning behind each image. At first, I struggled a little with selecting the right images to symbolize death, life, time and lust. From what I learned in module 1-2 vanitas are pieces of art that remind people of mortality and that material things are temporary. A common example of a vanitas collage would be images of skulls and rotting food, clocks and decaying flowers. For this specific project I chose six images. An image of a woman showing half of her skull with a cigar in her
On May 3rd when I visited the site where the Norman Blumberg Housing Project once stood, the air was hauntingly peaceful. I had read about the notoriety of the site during my research, how over its existence it had become an area of concentrated poverty and crime, but on this day this urban setting was quiet and calm. On the two square city blocks where a complex of apartment buildings once ruled the landscape, only a single high-rise remained among the unchecked wild grass. However, even in the peacefulness of this day in Sharswood, the looming presence of the infamous Norman Blumberg Apartments could still be felt.
Art History is the study of objects of art in their historical development and stylistic contexts. The history of art, we feel, can sometimes be confused with art criticism. However, Art History is concerned with finding the value of the artistic piece in respect with others in the same category of art or movement, and art criticism is more of an evaluation of art. The art examined best represents the culture during the time period, visions the artist imagined, and history behind an event. It also represents society in a specific area, beliefs the people may have, writing that tells a story, the natural world and environment, conflict between people and areas, and the human body. With these representations, artwork overall represents the life in which we live (d). Each piece has its own genre, design, format and style to it. This makes each piece extremely different, yet pleasing to the eye. They also vary between paintings, sculptures and architecture. These different types also make a variety of artwork to be seen by all people. The art pieces that I chose, Jar, Bottle and Glass by Juan Gris, The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dalí, and Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh, seemed interesting to me and I believe to best represent the context in which they were created, along with the major artistic movements of the time. I went on to research them more thoroughly to better understand the history behind them,

No-Kill Shelters are very different from Kill and Low-Kill Shelters. For example, Maddie’s Fund wrote that no-kill shelters save all healthy and treatable dogs and cats. They will even keep the animal until it gets adopted. Around 7.6 million dogs and cats are sent to an animal shelter every year. But only 4.9 animals are saved mostly by no-kill shelters. However, if the animal is unhealthy or untreatable, they will put it down. Also, they only take in animals that are adoptable. Pet360 stated, “They do not accept animals without appointments and have a very thorough screening process. Additionally, these shelters often will not accept animals over a certain age,
Christ house is an organization that empowers, heals spiritually, physically, and mentally, and providing clients with medical assistance in areas of their lives that needs stabilizing. The caregivers at the homes assist in arranging medical care, such as routine appointments or follow-up care as needed, in the event the resident or his or her guardians do not. In addition, a staff member normally attends the resident’s medical appointment. Each resident, or his or her guardian, is allowed to seek treatment from a physician of their choice. If they do not chose a physician, the group homes will bring the residents for medical care to consulting physicians. Frances House pays its consulting physicians a total of $150 per month for their consulting services. The physicians then bill the resident’s insurance or public aid for the medical services provided.
There are multiple organizations that offer help to the homeless, or give them the necessary materials to their survival. Food Banks, Soup Kitchens and Homeless Shelters give similar opportunities to the displaced. They tend to the individuals that are less fortunate in the community. There are rules that come along with attending to these places, for example, you have to be clean and not use substances and you are not allowed to carry any weapons of any sort. Although these places offer food and homes they don’t offer medical care. Well, luckily there is an organization that does offer medical care and incorporates faith within their work. This organization named Christ House, offers many opportunities to become a new, also to turn your life
Since 2013, I have had the privilege of working for the Jacksonville Humane Society (JHS). In my tenure, I have watched one of the largest cities in the United States achieve and sustain a live-release rate of greater than 90%. It’s been awe-inspiring and inspirational to me. Today, I’m hoping to put that inspiration to work and begin carving a new path in my animal welfare career by asking you to consider my application for the Maddie’s Shelter Management Scholarship. Due to financial constraints, I am unable to complete the program without the help of Maddie’s Fund.
In the late 1980s at the age of 58 Elliot Liebow was diagnosed with cancer and told he did not have much time to live. Receiving this news he retired his job as an anthropologist and decided to spend his time volunteering. At first he began in a local soup kitchen but then began volunteering at four emergency homeless shelters during the winters that served single women in a small city outside Washington D.C. During his time at the shelters, Dr. Liebow grew of great interest in the matter and decided to use a participant observation technique to gather all information he witnessed and write a book to illustrate how shelters really feel from the inside. His mission was to get everyday interaction and data in attempt to understand and perceive
Many shelters were built in London around the 12th through the 15th century (History of Long Term Care, n.d.). From the founding years of shelters similar to long term facilities were originally connected to monasteries (History of Long Term Care, n.d.). After King Henry VIII closed all monasteries, he closed the shelters involved with them (History of Long Term Care, n.d.) .
I am writing with sincere gratitude to thank you and the Trustees of the Vivian L. Smith Foundation for your recent $100,000 gift to the Houston SPCA’s More Than Shelter capital campaign. This gift is the second and final installment of your multi-year grant and has a critical impact on our goal of creating one centralized campus that is designed and equipped to serve all animals and the people who love and care for them.
While visiting Hannah Hall at Texas Southern University, I saw several murals that spoke to me. One mural in particular depicted the perfect image of distraught, anguish, and the depression Olaudah experienced. The mural is very dark, the artist uses shadow and light to distinguish the intense emotions of one face in three stages of grief. The background is dark, this suggests that the artist is in a state of depression. There is a hand that is larger than the figures in scale, reaching out and grabbing a figure of a man in deep thought. This represents God testing Olaudah’s faith with trials and tribulations. When reading The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Gustavus Vassa the African Written by Himself, I could feel the emotions he expressed
Vanitas is a still life painting of 17th century Dutch genre containing symbols of death or change as a reminder of their certainty and memento Mori, which is an object serving as a warning or reminder of death like a skull. The cow skull with cowboy hat both indicate death for humans and animals because the skull alone symbolizes the invertibility of being dead. Also, it adds some sort of humor to the composition to remind us that death can come at anytime and to live life to the fullest because our demise can occur where it’s least expected. Historically, the cow skulls have been used in rituals where usually a life needs to be sacrificed and it’s a symbol of death. As for the hat it means usually riders of any animals wear cowboy hats, which
The determination of these values requires you to add columns to the Inventory Analysis worksheet. Mr. Milligan asks you to use the worksheet provided. As Mr. Milligan will use the Inventory Analysis worksheet during a presentation, he wants the worksheet to have a professional appearance. To enhance the worksheet’s appearance, you include an appropriate header and format to the worksheet, column, and row labels. The header should display the name of the business, the name of the worksheet, and the current date. As you construct the worksheet, you use the currency format for all columns containing dollar values. Also, for any column that contains a percentage, you
