Hey Kennedy! You really missed out on not coming to the Summer Bridge Program. It’s been really helpful and has definitely prepared me for my engineering career. I think that the math class is my favorite, but the writing class is definitely the most helpful. It’s helped me remember some things that I’ve forgotten about writing, however, it’s also introduced me to the writing I’ll have to do in the engineering field. The assignments have been easy, but we got to interview a professor in our major which was pretty cool.
We’ve also had to do some reading responses. Basically we had to read the articles and write a summary and discussion about them. The first reading response was about academic writing and what academic writing is. One of the main points were 7 myths that the author, Irvin introduced. They were all common high school writing ideas that you shouldn’t use in college. Some of the prominent myths were perfect first drafts, the five paragraph essay, and the never use “I” (Irvin, 4-5). Our second and third reading responses gave tips about college writing assignments. For example, when a professor hands out an assignment sheet, you shouldn’t freak out. But you should listen because the

In my first interview, I got to interview a sophomore in Electrical & Computer Engineering. It was great talking to a student who has gone through all of the classes I’m about to take. For example, in his Intro to Engineering class, the writing assignments mainly consisted of short answer questions. However, he did have some classes with longer assignments. In one of his CAD/Engineering Design classes, he had to write a 25-page professional report. Later, he also had to write a 10-page paper for an Honor’s Seminar. Luckily, he said that I won’t have to take those classes and the professor no longer works here. I was definitely not looking forward to writing any 25-page
A review of Christina Berchini’s academic article “To Teach Writing, You Too Much Get Your Ass Kicked” In the article, Christina Berchini talks about how it’s helped her students to know she sends out her work to journals and newspapers because she wants to be a writer. She points to the difference between the way she views the debate about students’ writing and the way it is addressed in the mainstream media. First of all, the author talks about how her students found out she was putting herself out there by sending out her work but instead of teachers and professors criticizing it, it was publishers of journals and newspapers. At that point, based on her students’ reaction, she realized if she wants her students to buy into the importance
Throughout the progression of this course I learned countless things concerning my writing. {Simkin, M. G., Crews, J. M., & Groves, M. J. (2012). While it’s there’s a many amounts of things ‘ve learned throughout the course, there are several things I‘ve learned which include the step by step process, including the correct usage of grammar and properly proofreading my work before I turn it in. I found out i had a major problem with my punctuation usage and insufficient when it came my periods and commas. I’ve invested some time writing through grammarly and other helpful sites to improve my writing skills. I appreciate the assistance and help I received from Mrs. C
I began this course with goals to significantly improve my writing. I knew there were challenges for me to overcome, because I have not written much at all since high school, which has been more than twenty four years ago. Nonetheless, I was up for the challenge and each week I made sure to do exactly as instructed in the weekly syllabus, reading each every assignment very carefully. At first I felt overwhelmed, but as I completed the homework and discussion post assignments for the weeks prior to the major papers, the overwhelming feelings subsided and I concentrated on each task at hand.
I can remember my first writing assignment like it was yesterday. The Spring of 2011, I was a Junior at Goose Creek High School in South Carolina. In Creative Writing class with my teacher Mr. Geary, this kind of writing was a new learning experience for me. The first assignment he wanted us to complete was an essay telling our classmates about ourselves and the things that make us unique. It was a paper highlighting key moments in our lives that got us to where we are and who we are.
For my creative project I wrote four short stories, and seven poems. I found the ideas for these by looking at writing prompts on Pinterest. I went through quite a few ideas before I settled on doing this. It was a really fun project, and I think it has helped me understand, and analyze a lot of how and what I like to write. I think that being able to understand how I write will help me write a lot more productively, and enjoy writing a lot more in the future. I used the five steps of the creative process - first insight, saturation, incubation, “ah-ha”, verification - to analyze what I went through while I was writing.
Writing, I mean the process that we implant our ideas in; use certain skills to arrange them in a pursuable way and of course polish the words with our heart, differs from what I learned under a circumstance of passing a class or getting a good grade in a language test. I am not born in a circumstance that widely use English, and writing to me is a subject that I need to pass my English classes. I do not like to write things with limited topics and selected materials because that is lame and it does not involve many personal interests in it, I like to write things that can deliver my ideas and thoughts with materials that I interested in. I am not a good writer as I lack of understandings of English itself, I cannot find suitable words that
One day I got the phone call from my friend. She said my Instructor provide a topic and need to write a note on that particular topic. She had written and asked me to check that one. When I got time, I checked that note and uploaded on paper checking website for grammar mistakes or any plagiarism. I found there was 75% plagiarism. Immediately I called her and explain that what she has done is not good for her carrier, if you really like that web site, you can use for your references but when you write, use your own words and thoughts. That is the correct attitude to write because we can learn more vocabularies, writing pattern. My friend was so happy to know about plagiarism and keep telling me, ‘you save me.’
Upon entering college, I was actually quite nervous about what to expect from my Composition I class. I’d seen the films, read the articles and heard from others about all the insane deadlines and stress that came with that. I never enjoyed writing or English class in general, but taking Composition I has changed my views on both. This class has benefitted me in several ways, as both a student and a writer. I have learned how to write more effectively, expanded my writing methods, and learned how to properly use different grammar techniques.
Throughout my years of English class, essay writing has always been one of my weakest points. Putting my thoughts onto a piece of paper is easy, but it is the process of reforming my thoughts and conveying them properly that is difficult to do. The most difficult type of essay for me is argumentative. I find good quotes that are relative to the topic and incorporate them into my essay well. However, when writing, analysis and syntax is where I am the most lacking.
This cover letter aimed to describe what I learned in the Academic Writing class (ENGL 4893). In addition, to highlight the assignments I wrote as practice for the academic research writing in my scientific field. Academic writing might define as how scientists document research, and what scientific literature sources were cited. Before the class I knew that scientific article summarize a research done by a group of authors. Also, I knew that each article contains many sections. However, the academic writing class (ENGL 4893) improved my understanding for the role of each section. In addition, I improved my academic writing skills, taking advantage of the various practices we did at the class.
A journey into something unknown can be a very nerve-racking experience. For myself, this journey was into Composition 1 this semester. Coming into a college level writing class as a junior in high school was an exciting feat for my academic career. However, I was scared for the next step I would have to take. Little did I know that through the next fourteen weeks of writing I would grow exponentially. This class helped me to experience physical growth, emotional growth, and make critical improvements for the future.
As a college student writing is something that I have trouble doing. After struggling through high school with the same issues, I told myself that I was going to improve my writing skill one way or another. The three main things that I should focus on in order to get my writing skills to part are: 1. outlining, I always over look outlining because I hate to break writing down. 2. Finding someone to look over my paper, sometimes the idea of asking people to look at your writing and see if they find mistakes is hard. Criticism can be hard on you at times. 3. Do a more thorough search of my topic, usually when I research information I just get the first information that I find, but I should get deeper in my searches then I currently do. I think that these three things have not affected my communication, but
When first coming to Introduction to College Writing, I was nervous. I didn’t know anyone and nobody knew me. One thing I did know was that I was going to be writing tons of papers. As the class began on the first day everybody looked tense, but the professor made everyone feel comfortable. She told us that we were going to be writing 3 important essays and that we were going to improve as writers. When I wrote my first essay, I expected a decent grade. When I got my paper back, it wasn’t what I expected at all. This made me understand that most of the things in college are nothing like the things in high school. The professors won’t care if a student doesn’t come to class or if a student doesn’t do homework. Students have to be accountable and take care of themselves.
I needed to fill up my schedule and for the 2nd year in a row I tried to sign up for the coaching and sports class. However, for the 2nd year in a row, I wasn’t able to get into the coaching and sports class. The counselor randomly assigned me to creative writing. I didn’t pick creative writing because I was in the honor’s English class, and I knew I would be doing enough writing in that class alone. I entered your classroom with a high school attitude of thinking I was too good for where I was at. My attitude was that this class would be a blow off and that I could breeze through this semester. I was wrong, but it turned out to be in the best way. I’ve had you as an English teacher before, but in creative writing you provided me with freedom.
This fall semester was an exciting and interesting days to me. I was little nervous coming to this fall semester, even though I was happy to be in college after my high school graduation this year. The transition between high school and college was big, I changed my whole life system. I learned how to maintain the time and even changed my learning style from the high school in order to be successful in college. In this transition between high school to college, English 1301 helped me a lot. This semester in this online course I learned what it takes to be a good college student. Especially in this English class I improved my reading skills, writing skills and analyzing skills.
