At the start of this course, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I had a goal for myself to improve and learn skills that would make writing less daunting for me. I have learned so many things about my writing that I didn’t think much about before. Another goal I had was to break the cookie-cutter mold that was set upon me throughout high school. During the process of revision, I discovered many things about myself as a writer and techniques that have been effective for me in the writing process.
When I signed up for this course I was not expecting very much out of it. I assumed that, like most typical English courses, I would be learning to write proper essays. Once I saw that I would be writing to share experiences (Christmas tradition), writing to inform (biographical sketch), and writing to analyze (visual analysis) the class seemed easier. I thought this class would be a piece of cake! Unfortunately, I knew little of all the goals and expectations that would be needed from me! However, it was a pleasant surprise. I have never realized all the different types of writing, and how each writing area contains its own audience, purpose, genre, rhetorical situation, voice and tone, and context/medium/genre. Over the past four months, I have made great strides as a writer. The area where I have seen the most growth is in my use of the writing process. Prior to my enrollment in this course, I would sit down and write all my papers in one sitting. This class has taught me how to lay out a plan for my papers. I have learned how to effectively brainstorm/research, draft, and revise my writings before I complete them. Also I have learned to not just stop there, instead I am now going back and reflecting on my work after I complete it. This allows me to identify where I prospered and also where my downfalls may have been. With this information, I am able to apply this to future writings of mine; lessons that will stay with me forever.
This course will guide me to develop better writing habits. I will reach this goal by taking the time to use the proven process of writing, instead of just sitting down to write and start forming my papers without first outlining the concepts that I will be covering in the paper. This habit will take some time to develop, but if I use my new habits with every paper I write they will become habits to last a lifetime. I believe, by learning the writing process, this class will give me the confidence I need when putting ideas into words on paper.
Throughout the seven weeks that I have taken this writing composition course, I have developed skills to help me improve my own writing. Using the writing process is one of the main focuses in the course. The writing process helps writers develop and revise their essay as they work their way up to creating the final draft that can be presented. Although there are many areas in my own writing where I can get better, I have found that my writing has improved in many ways while practicing using the writing process.
One of my weaknesses in my writing is that I tend to have a “one track mind”. Once I have an idea about how to word something or organize an essay, I tend to only see it from that perspective, even if it’s not the most optimal way to convey my arguments. This class helped me think outside of the box and learn to organize things like I would not normally do, this included how I would analyze texts or synthesize ideas. The in-class activities helped me learn to be creative, the class readings gave me examples on how to organize that creativity and the instructor conferences helped me further organize my thoughts and organization.
The process I used when writing previously changed during the first few weeks of this class. Already I have altered the way I write my drafts, and the way I read other people’s work. Lamott’s “Shitty First Draft” made me come to the realization that one draft isn’t always the best approach. Therefore, I took multiple steps in examining my draft and critiquing it accordingly. Additionally, I started brainstorming topics, and this led me to create a roadmap for the list of destinations and topics I wanted to touch on and the message I wanted the reader to take away. This is just the beginning of the year and I already have a sense that as I progress through the semester my work will be continually get better.
The standards that were chosen for this literacy development profile closely fit with what my class is learning this quarter. We are working with writing complete sentences with capital letters and punctuation, sight words, spelling, and letter sounds. The standards I chose also correlate with the kindergarten standards since many of my students are just transitioning into the first grade. The writing standard I chose allows for a broader spectrum when it comes to persuasive and opinion pieces. My first graders can only write very simple sentences and some have not master that skill at all. When I was trying to find the right writing standard for this project, it was very important that it focused on the voice of writing. First graders have very limited writing and spelling conventions now, so the voice is one of the components we can see in the very beginning of writing.
Writing isn’t for everyone, yet the number of people writing in this exact moment is pretty monstrous if you google it. Writing has basically been there for me since I was born, it was there when they wrote my birth certificate, when i was learning how to write my name, when i wrote my first essay, taking the STAAR tests, practicing for the AP test, to my first writing assignment for college. People are gifted with creating such rich, breathtaking, emotional, and deep work that last for generations and generations (not me), but writing has not always been a friend to me. The process of writing is not just write and your done, no you need to take time and let your ideas gush out (duh you already knew that) but also to edit and revise to make those final drafts. Writing can be a huge pain in the buttocks (ass), but it isn 't that bad. Here are some of my issues and strengths about writing and my take on it.
For this course, my goals were to improve my written communication skills that in turn will decrease my anxiety when faced with written communication, also to improve my note taking skills. My plan was to learn the writing process and practice what I learned. Upon completion of this course, I feel I am on a path to accomplish these goals; however, I realize I need plenty of practice. When confronted with a writing project I feel a little more confident that it will not be as much of a struggle as before. A simple example, while taking this course, I was facing a situation with my insurance company, at the last minute, they declined a much needed and anticipated procedure, I had no choice but to write a letter to the grievance department explaining the need and the urgency. Using the concepts, I learned in this course, I fashioned my letter in a logical flow, I also felt confident in my ability to write a
After looking back at all the writing I have accomplished in this class and experiences I have faced in other English classes, I realized how they have affected me as a writer and where I stand as one as of now. The writer I am today has been greatly benefited with years of learning English in school and other literacy sponsors. Throughout the years, I have learned a number of ways to write and I have been positively impacted by these methods. I now know the type of writer that I am and how I write best and in under which conditions. Now, I have my own writing process that most likely differs from my peers.
My writing skills which I have worked on over the few months I have been in English 102 have changed quite a bit in my opinion. There are many things which I have improved upon that were amongst my weaker writing skills when the year began. On the opposite side of that point, there are also many things which I still need to improve upon if I want to truly elevate my writing to a level that I will be confident in. Finally, I have gained new skills outside of writing from this class, particularly the activities which we did in class at various points throughout the year. These things all cumulate together to give me an appreciation of English courses which I did not previously have.
Writing is a skill that takes time to develop. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses is very important. Being aware of your strengths can help you stand out, and your weaknesses show you areas where improvement is needed. Like everybody I have weaknesses as well as strengths, and being conscious of them helped me improve my writing skills.
I believe I have achieved most of the course learning objectives as I pass this class with a c or higher. I undertook the writing process we learned in class and it has helped me become a better writer. Before I entered my freshman year of college I didn’t know how to write. But as I undertook the writing process I was taught in class I now know how to write. First when it came to writing my assignment papers for my class I grabbed a notebook and did prewriting . I brainstormed a list of ideas for my papers. I then had a plan on everything I was going to write about. I then sit down and write my first draft. I make sure my first paragraph is a strong
It is my belief that through this class and the tools provided, that my growth as a writer has grown through leaps and bounds I would never have assumed possible. It is not so much the skill I refer to, although I would think skill has gone up in some levels as well, but more so the appreciation for the craft of writing itself. Intially, at the start of this class my sole goal was to further my understanding and appreciation of the writer's and books that I so love to read. Through further evaluation within the first week, a few other goals came to mind, of which were, making writing a habit, finishing what I start, stop second guess my writing skills and making effective use of detail and description. Through the use of the many articles, various reading materials, whether poems or short stories, and especially through the workshop, I feel I was able to really push myself to accomplishing these goals. I have thus far learned how important it is not to be skilled at writing per say, but to have the will to write, that poetry is as much about it's sound as it is about it's subject, just how important character development is, how the narration and point of view of a story is essential to the way the story is told, and just how much of a difference peer's critiques can make to your writing.
