My Writing Experience

All throughout my years of schooling, I’ve had just about, one paper that was about one page long, due every year. My papers never had to be more than one page in length. Therefore, I did not have to do much writing or do many essays. Surely not enough to remember any of the assignments. Writing has never been something I enjoyed doing, so I never bothered to many any memories of my writing experiences. I did not think it was necessary to remember any of them since I only had to do them to get a grade. The only writing experience I remember was the first assignment I had in this English 100 class about a writing experience. All week long, I sat there thinking about what to write about, but nothing came to mind as a topic. Then, one thing came to mind, but it was so very vague, I could not write the length that was needed for the assignment. I could only think of a few sentences to write for it. After sitting for a few moments longer, I thought, how about I write about how difficult it was for me to write this essay before it was due.

A learner’s ability to communicate effectively through writing to his/her target audiences is a major prerequisite for academic success. It is also a major pillar of success in one’s career across all areas of practice. Even though, writing clearly is critical to one’s academic and career success, I have not always loved writing. In fact, for a long time I despised writing. At one point, I had a feeling that my writings skills were bound to remain stagnated throughout my life. However, time has proven that I was wrong. My attitude and outlook towards virtually all genres of writing has changed positively. The various helpful methods I have been exposed to by my English teachers through different grades have helped me

English has never been my strong suit. Ever since elementary school, I found it hard to fully grasp the grammatical structure and concept of the English language. It was worse through middle and high school, where things got all the more complicated and I learned how to write personal, analytical, and argumentative essays. This not only forced me to rack my brain for strong thesis statements, but to also think deeply and profoundly about a variety of subjects and topics. Eventually, through my struggles I saw my writing skills slowly improve throughout the years but even so, I realized that this skill is one where you have to constantly work and improve on because it’s an essential skill to have and will benefit us later on in life. For example, even though I’m a Biology major, English is a requirement I need in order to graduate and surprisingly enough my English class is filled with a diverse group of students in other majors as well, such as criminal justice, engineering, and business.

The inevitable had happened; I, as a small child, was demanded to read. A little antisocial human being launched into a world of, at first, difficult words and lengthy phrases. While words and literacy were forced into my mind, I had reluctantly begun the adventure to enjoy and accept the art of literature. Later however, my hopes and dreams were crushed to pieces by a gruesome teacher with an interesting form of a so called “grading policy.”

The only thing I really remember about reading and writing instruction when I was little is being read to. I was in preschool and when it was time to read we all sat on the rainbow rug, and our teacher would read to us. I don’t have the best memory. I’m sure there were more attempts on getting my interest in reading and writing, I just can’t remember.

One of my most challenging experiences in writing was actually in Virginia Wesleyan College. During my last semester, I was taking Professor Ruh’s ENG 250 class called 19th Century American Women Writers, and we were required to write a few literary analytical essays on novels and short stories that were written by women during the 19th century. Even though the class was very interesting, I was having such a hard time writing my essays that I actually thought I would never be able to pass his class after I failed my first essay. I am usually the type of student that never asks for help because I would often feel intimidated by my teachers. However, I managed to speak up and ask for his help throughout the entire semester and because of that,

During the four years I spent in high school, it was real hard for me to write an essay or just a simple paragraph. And it was all, because I couldn’t express what I thought or I just couldn’t write something down. Yet, when the teachers would tell me to write something down, I was always the last one to finish. Why? because I couldn’t think of anything to write. Or sometimes it was the timing that the teachers would give us to write that distracted me a lot from doing what I had to do. And since English is my second language is hard for me to write and think in English. My childhood never consisted of a basic family routine. Other than my own house, I spent a majority of my time between my aunt’s and grandma’s house, which had a major impact on the way reading and writing has affected my life today. I was around the age of four when I began the first stages of my interests in reading. My aunt was the first one to sit down with me and begin the layout of my love for reading by teaching me the alphabet and the basic sounds of each letter. And my grandma was the first one to ensure the writing factor as she often told me stories that she had written herself. I’ve done multiple academic writing throughout high school and couple more years in college. Half of all the writing I’ve done in high school has been in my native language; Amharic.

During my junior and senior year of high school at Leslie County I found a reason to enjoy writing and have fun with the thing I wrote. Every class until those years was either way too boring for me to pay attention, or the teachers really didn’t seem to care what you wrote down, they would just grade and move on it seemed. I never had a teacher who would actually look at what I wrote down and come speak to me about it, whether to praise the stuff I wrote down or to help me with small problems in my assignments. Expecting another failure of a class to sit through, I was already dreading English that day. I didn’t really know what this teacher was all about, then I met. At the beginning of this Writing Composition course, I hardly had any expectations besides the excessive amount of essay assignments. Up until this course, I had only considered that this was any other ordinary writing class. My experiences with writing classes and essays have not been a fun one because I have always seen it as an annoying task. Recently, this narrow perception of mine has gradually deteriorated because of my experience in this course. I have realized that writing isn’t just another assignment, but it is a place where one can express their opinions, emotions, and experiences. This course has helped me develop my strengths like my development of thoughts and organization skills while being able to acknowledge my weaknesses like having trouble stating two positions and having biased opinions. Due to this recent realization, I have been able to get a better insight of my writing skills and a new perspective of writing classes.

Research types of writings at college helped me strengthen my writing skills because as I started to research on a topic, not only I learned more in depth, but also learned how to draw further connections outside of the course(class). I want to improve my writings in making correct connections and organizing ideas. Sometimes, I misunderstand the readings and end up making the wrong connections. In fact, my ideas are all over the place whenever I try to make connections, which does not clearly show that I have understood the assignment. These mistakes often led to downside of my grades. The most useful advice I received that helped me improve my writing is that “the word ‘writing’ actually means to put things together, so don’t be afraid of express your opinions in your writing your opinion.” This encourage me not to be afraid of writing and expressing my opinions.

As a writer, I would say that I’m a very personalized writer. I like to put a lot of my emotions, experiences, and opinions into what I write. I do my best to find something to appreciate in everything I read. For starters, I will begin with my strengths. Whenever, I write, I plan what I’m going to write before jotting words down. This method is very effective when writing essays. With writing, I’m very detailed and I get straight to the point. I want to get my readers and audience absorbed quickly. Also, I have plenty of weakness. Manytimes, I wrongly assume that the reader is able to understand my thoughts, while the various points of my argument are actually not expressed clearly. I know exactly what I want is to perform English skills as well as my ability of mathematics. When I am facing a complicated subject to write, I then test the limit and try to break it.

Throughout life, writing has been a major struggle for me to succeed as well as others. Therefore knowing my weakness, I begun by taking classes that were perquisites and taking those has help my writing improved. Soon writing has begun to become one of my major aspirations in life. It also became another aspiration in my life based on the teachings from my 12 grade English teacher pushing us as students to constantly write essays. Having her as my teacher allowed me to push myself and avoid writer’s block. Writers block is very common for people who love to write as much as I do. They tend to find it difficult to start ideas and to develop them properly, and having her as my teacher and a major influence in my life when it comes to academic
