My first college writing experience consisted of several resumes and cover letters for the various work-study jobs that I applied to. Prior to that, I have constructed numerous essays where I primarily critiqued the literary works of many well-known authors. In junior year of high school, I critiqued the notable poetry of a unique author-- Wislawa Szymborska. The poetry Szymborska wrote was very intricate and rich in subliminal messages. Her poetry usually disregarded the use of rhyme, and instead focused on the sophisticated use of metaphors and allusions. In addition, I continued to evaluate other notable literary works in my senior year of high school. My English teacher instructed me to analyze the poetry of John Donne-- who focused on constructing short poems which reflected complex messages through the use of extended metaphors. I like to write strong essays with few grammar and spelling errors. I believe that I occasionally overlook my essays, and I allow a few mistakes to pass by; nonetheless, I accept my errors and I learn from them. I always begin my writing process with an initial thought to begin with. I tend to write my works chronologically, similarly to the way a person tells a story. I am aware of my essay’s potential once I receive feedback from other peers. I often like to revise the essays myself twice, after I allow another peer to revise my essay and provide commentary. However, whenever I do not have the time in my schedule to conduct such a process, I instead revise it myself twice on the day before I submit the paper to the teacher. I am fairly content with the extent of my abilities as a writer, but I would like to further develop my skills by the end of the semester. I am confident that I will learn all the skills necessary to succeed in my English 105 class. In addition, I believe that the skills that I will acquire in the class must enable me to succeed in the
There are many experiences that have shaped the way I write today. For example, during my senior year at Plainfield Central High School, I struggled with finding a way to put my paper together using ideas and words of my own. My senior English teacher always said, “Writing a paper is not always just citing what you found on a website. You need to add your own thoughts and comments to make your paper more personal.” She sat down with me after class and worked on my paper with me to try and teach me a way to find my own words and it worked. She had me write the paper before finding any type of citations on the internet. That way, it was all my own words and then I could find my sources and add them in there and delete anything of my own if needed. Another example is, when I was sitting at my kitchen table struggling to find the words to make the paper have good detail. My mother looked at me and said, “Write how you want it to be written. Write it in the way you believe will make a good paper.” That has helped me tremendously because when I write how I want to write, I generally like how my papers turn out so much more. Another thing that has helped me was, about one time every week I would sit down and write about anything I can think of. It could be what I am looking forward to doing in the future or even just what is on my mind at that moment. I realized that the more I write, the better I get at it.
English has never been my strongest topic nor has the writing process been easy when faced with writer block. This challenge made writing difficult at times in where I was unable to think what should be written next. In this portfolio, I include a variety of pieces in the growth in my abilities of overcoming this challenge as a writer. As I reflect back at the end of the semester on my work in the writing 01 course, I am able to see clearly how much have improved as a writer and display my growth. I have learned about myself in term of weakness and strength and learned from them. In this portfolio , I tried to show the presence of the different style of work I completed and the peer editing of this semester. And how the feedback that I receive
Write down for both your writing - as well as for your audio-visual skills what your strengths and weakness are. Be concrete and detailed. Give evidence / arguments why you think this is so. Below some sentences are given which may help you on your way.
“Extra! Extra! Read all about it!” Lines like these were always running through my mind when I got involved with my school’s journalism program. It was my sophomore year, and I remember walking into school with my usual, and sometimes excessive, self-confidence. This inflation, I think, was rooted in my new position in the school’s newspaper, editor in training. Hitherto, I was just a reporter and I gained a lot of experience in journalism. “How can I make this story as interesting as possible for my reader?” I would ask myself. I wrote quite a few. From short stories about espionage, to a quick tip on how to heal a sports injury. My experience grew pretty broad, and I was eager to use it all in designing the newspaper as head editor. However, amidst my enthusiasm, there was a failure I didn’t see coming.
Writing allows me to express my views as a student. I have always enjoyed writing well as speaking. By writing first, then preparing and reciting notes, I am able to push through the nervous jitters when I have to speak at work. Writing first, then speaking will help you get a clear message across (Young, 2006). For me, being able to write has been healing. As I am sure most families experience issues of some kind, my family had many issues while I was a child. So, writing was and still is a tool for me to get things out and off of mind. A few friends of mine say they do not like to write and would not do it unless they had to. I encourage them to find something they want to learn about, then read about it and the writing will come. We can become passionate in writing about what we are interested in learning about (Quinn, 2015). Well, I do have to write for this class and for school in general. But, I choose to view it as an extension of what I already like to do, which is express my thoughts and understandings about what I read or study. The only difference with school is that someone is telling me what I have to read or study. This can make the learning less passionate, but if I can find one little thing that I can grab on to, it seems to provide me with a purpose to write.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been writing, both inside and outside of class. While I haven’t always been drawn to reading classics, I have spent a lot of time reading in general, and it always seemed to encourage me. I was easily inspired by the words on the pages coming to life in my mind, and even more fascinated by the fact that the image almost certainly looked different to every individual who took the words in themselves. I’ve always enjoyed being able to paint images in the minds of others and intrigued to learn just how much different it must look to each person who took in the words that I wrote. Did they look different to other people, or did everyone have the same general idea? How close were their own images to mine?
I have tremendously improved as a writer during the time spent in this class. Composition one has taught me many lessons that will benefit me down the road. I have learned how to become a better writer, and I have learned many different tips to make my work the best it can be. During the months spent in composition one, I have written four essays. I struggled with some essays more than others, but I still made all of the deadlines. My best two essays are essay one and essay two.
As a writer in college, students will be challenged. Unlike high school writing classes, college writing will be more sophisticated and intimate. In high school, most English classes require students to follow the pace of the teacher, however, college writing requires students to work at their own pace. After reading these two articles by Sommers, my thoughts on academic writing has changed. One of Sommers’s students, David, best exemplifies my expectations of a college writer because his attitude towards the class demonstrates how I believe academic writing is challenging. As a student, David went against the grain of the class and “went beyond the texts [Sommers] offered and chose his own.” I believe that college students like David struggle to find or understand information in the given text.
1. I've never considered myself much of a writer. I'm expecting that we will be writing often in this course so, one of the goals I'm hoping achieve from English106 is to become more accustomed to writing. Once this is accomplished, it will easily allow me to make further improvements on my writing abilities. My second goal is to become an active reader. Active reading will allow me to pick up an in dept perspective and pose unique questions on the novel. My third goal is to improve on my analysis skills. I often find myself incapable to analyzing a piece of literature to a deeper level. Hopefully discussions during conferences will me to come up with a deeper analysis of passages.
At the beginning of the 2017-18 I had many writing oriented struggles that stopped me from writing to the best of my abilities. One of the many speed bumps I encountered was that I made bad choices when it came to the words I chose when writing my essays. During the course of the school year I have learned to improve the way I write papers by using better words. I have also learned that I should look up synonyms of words that don't fit or sound right in my essay to make everything sound better. The words I use in my essays also lack precision. I have improved on this by searching for the definition of words on the internet. If the original word in a sentence does not match my thought, I will look for a new word that matches the meaning that
For as long as I can remember, reading has always been a hobby of mine. Both of my parents encouraged me at a young age to pick up books, and they furthered this by reading to me often. They influenced my interest in fiction and nonfiction, and when my sister was born, I would do the same for her. Even though I still like to read, I have found more hobbies and my interests have changed. Nevertheless, I still have the same enjoyment reading my favorite literature that I had when I was little. Also, I have developed a fondness for writing in the last few years as well.
When it comes to writing, my experience is fairly decent. I have been a writer for the majority of my life when starting back when I was much younger. I was required to write a small story for a handwriting class, however, I got so hooked into the story that after the class was over, I rewrote the story in a much larger scale. I would continue writing small stories and poems for the next few years of my life before I decided to take on my biggest project yet.
Since I graduated from Chinese high school, I don’t have any experience of conducting a research paper before this paper 4. In my writing experience, I needed to huge amount of time spend a large amount of time on the process of learning specific knowledge on the topic. I wanted to make the whole article more readable and attractive. My prior knowledge on this topic is based on my own experience. Then I used my stories in the research paper to prove the topic sentence. In order to drafted the paper, the topic concepts like bilingual and its advantages have to be considered and researched carefully on the internet. In the feedback process, some negligible improvement was made on my structure from my partner. The responses on the revision is
Many intellectuals describe their educational journey as a step path which will be worth nothing in the end. Mine, on the other hand, will not only impact my life but as well as the life of others. I want to do more with my life, then working at a fast food restaurant. I want to be somebody, and to be somebody, you must have an education. Having an education in today’s society means nothing unless you know how to use it properly. The central part of having an education is learning how to write and the different ways you must write. I, unfortunately, have always struggled with the concept of writing ever since I could remember. However, this semester has taught me that being different with my writing, is a good thing. No matter how bad I thought I was, I can always continue to improve.
Writing is a form of communication. It is a process of using letters of the alphabet, punctuation and spaces to communicate thoughts and ideas in a readable form. Now days writing is not only using a pen or a pencil, it can also be done with a keyboard which is normally attached to a typewriter, computer or mobile device. To write clearly it is essential to have knowledge of grammar, punctuation and sentence structure. Vocabulary is also necessary, as is correct spelling and formatting. Although all this sounds logical, it is not an easy task to accomplish and it can take several years to make yourself understand thru writing. My first experience in writing started when I was a kid but as I have grown older the way I do is different. Now that I´m in college writing is essential not only to communicate but also to learn.
