My Writing Process Analysis

When you start to think about it, quickly you realize that almost everything we do in life has some sort of writing around it. Whether it be sending a simple text message or writing a long essay we all have to have the common foundation of how to write. As students progress their way through high school we are often pounded with the rules of writing. By the time you get to be a upperclassman you quickly learn that your days of learning how to write are not over once you get to college. As someone who is looking to study Aeronautics at Liberty University, still, the days of learning to write are far from over. Overall, I feel that both my quality of writing and writing process have improved over the course of the semester. This was important because in my first writing analysis statement at the beginning of the year, the two main things that I wanted to improve on were my quality and process. Throughout the semester, I learned to rely less on teacher comments and revisions and instead improve on my self-revision process, which was almost non-existent before I came to college.

The Capella University writing process includes four main parts. First, there is a prewriting, which allows the student to generate ideas of what the content of the assignment will be (Capella University, 2017). This step creates the audience and the purpose of the assignment. The next step is drafting the assignment, which allows the student to document the evidence that supports the main ideas (Capella University, 2017). This step is important because it helps determine if the evidence presented strongly supports the topic. The next step of the writing process is revising, which allows the student to make changes that will strengthen the content of the assignment (Capella University, 2017). I have been through a multitude of writing assignments and projects throughout my college career, and I can say that beginning them has always been the hardest thing for me to do. There are many that I don’t remember but, those that I do, are the ones that have influenced my writing technique the most. Some assignments and projects have influenced my writing while working through them, while others I learned from mistakes by eating the dust of a bad grade due to grammatical errors, or poor planning. Within English 219, we have already learned a vital set of writing skills, that will allow for the improvement of essays, and summaries that must be written for future assessments. Some of these skills that would be relevant for achieving general writing improvement could be ideas such as thesis development, structuring and planning, or more specific examples when actually fleshing out the essay such as elements of grammar and style. Thesis development which is crucial so that ideas can be fully explained and related back to a point which can be interpreted as an overarching theme for the entire paper, and allows the reader to interpret the topic of not only the essay but of each paragraph. The writing of my college essay was quite a process. Normally for me writing comes rather easy, I do not struggle putting my ideas on paper. At first I thought that this essay would be simple to do and not be very stressful. It turned out to be quite the opposite in fact, just brainstorming was a struggle for me. It was difficult for me to think about my life and how it is special. To me, the events that have shaped me do not seem that relevant, at 18 I had never really payed much attention to how certain things affected me, I just lived my life. eventually , with the help of Mary, I came to the realization that having my summer taken away from me due to a broken foot had really changed my life philosophy, it truly changed who I was and my outlook on life.

Finding your own writing process is crucial for a writer in order to write a successful paper. Everyone is unique and everyone’s writing process is going to be unique as well. A writer’s notebook is a perfect way for people to record random thoughts, dialogue you hear, and any other ideas you might hear. Brainstorming is a key technique to get started when composing a paper. Brainstorming allows you to think of different topics that would fulfill the requirements needed on your topic assigned. Freewriting, clustering, listing and outlining, and collaborating are also some other techniques that when practiced could come very useful when writing a paper. Having the ability to use either of these five techniques would help tremendously when composing a paper.

Throughout all four years of high school, the “meaning” of a race and all its components were described to me in great detail. My coach found that a three mile cross country race could apply to almost anything. He would analyze races by separating each mile. The first mile is run with one’s legs, the second with their brain, and the third with their heart. I never fully understood how the versatility of the science of a race. Immediately when thinking about how to explain my writing process and how I could reflect on this past semester while also encompassing the theme of love, the three mile cross country race that had been engrained in my brain came to mind.

Over the past four months, I have made great strides as a writer. The area where I have seen the most growth is in my use of the writing process. Prior to my enrollment in this course, I would sit down and write all my papers in one sitting. This class has taught me how to lay out a plan for my papers. I have learned how to effectively brainstorm/research, draft, and revise my writings before I complete them. Also I have learned to not just stop there, instead I am now going back and reflecting on my work after I complete it. This allows me to identify where I prospered and also where my downfalls may have been. With this information, I am able to apply this to future writings of mine; lessons that will stay with me forever.

I have been writing papers for a long time, but I am by no means the best writer I can be. To unleash my full potential as a writer, I have to review all my old writings. I have to analyze my past writing style so that I can see if there is anything I can do differently. Overall, the creation process of my papers can be better. Maybe taking a look at who I am as a writer will help me improve.

Many creative minds around the world have their own special ways to prepare themselves for writing. Through writing they can create award winning novels, books, and stories. Out of all these creative minds, none of them have any similarities on how they prepare themselves for writing. Most people assume that writers just sit down in a chair and crack their knuckles then start brainstorming for their writing . Everyone has their own different ways they prepare themselves physically and mentally. Personally before I start writing I have to make myself physically comfortable. For this to happen I have to place myself in a cold and quite environment. Then set a comfortable chair, a clean desk, a laptop, and a drink along with some snacks. After being physically comfortable, I have to then make myself mentally prepared to write by putting ideas down

I do write in a different voice than the one that I use in my personal day-to-day interactions, but it also depends on the style of writing and the situation. There are various kinds of papers that I have had to write in my academic career, such as, persuasion, argumentative, literature reviews, research, reflections, compare and contrast or descriptive. My voice in these different types of papers changes depending on the style I am writing; I am still the same person, just portraying my personality and voice in a different way. I believe this is one of the easiest ways to appeal to a certain audience and to attract people to read your writing.

My writing process in the past wasn't up to my expectations. In my past previous school years , we never had to write lengthy papers. Almost all of my papers were an analysis or a compare and contrast paper. Those papers bore me. I think if I written more free write things, my writing would be more advanced. I never remember my past papers being a struggle to write. The topic was always easy to find details and facts. However, I have forgotten a lot of the grammar rules due to lack of usage. Now looking back at my previous papers, I wish they had been more advanced and open free write. Looking back , I think high school should have prepared me more for the college level, but it didn't. I wish writing papers had progressively gotten harder to prepare me for the college level in writing.

“Hey, you! Pay attention!” A common statement I tell myself anytime I try to write a paper. Procrastination is a large portion of my writing process. I believe my best work is produced when I’m in a time crunch. The stress of time running out just makes the thoughts flow like a river of words.

Metacognition is the act of thinking about one’s own thought process. My perspective towards writing has without a doubt evolved over the past years of my life. Writing has never really been bothersome for me throughout my life and I believe that I’m an average writer. The best part about writing is there’s always room and opportunities to improve and grow. By analyzing and reviewing others work through their perspective, it has helped me see writing through a more passionate, and meaningful lens. There’s so much that goes into what makes writing what it is. Writing extends far beyond just an introduction paragraph and body paragraphs. Writing is conceptual and the writer needs to be conscious of the audience in which they’re addressing in order to determine the purpose of the content that will be written.
