As any artist does in their particular work of art, in order to become a great writer, you must be completely invested in what you are creating. Sentences must flow as if brush strokes, words must compile to create cohesive, clear, and complex thoughts as if colors. Writing is just as much of an art as painting, sculpting, or drama. Just like in writing, every artist has a particular style- the way the artist uses his brush, colors, canvas, tools- In writing a style can be shown by the writers distinct use of different sentence structures, distinct types of vocabulary, or other components that distinguish one writer from another. For myself, a great contributor into my style of writing was developed from a sense of humor obtained from a creative …show more content…
He then cordially referred to me as a “lexophile” to the class. I had no idea what a “lexophile” was, besides knowing that it was the lover of something; not knowing, I did what I normally would do, my research. ‘Lexo-” in Latin is referred to as “reading” or “words” and “Phile” is known as “the lover of”. So a lexophile is someone who loves words. Now knowing this, I could see that that my reading and writing had truly been reinforced. Later on throughout the year we drifted away from deep introspective thoughts to technical research papers. After the first research paper I completed, my teacher suggested to me that I needed to adjust my writing and take notice of what type of writing I was creating. In my research paper I was using an excessive amount of description and going about information in a roundabout way. Adjusting from descriptive and deep thoughts to concise writing was difficult, but I managed to find a common ground. I soon brought myself into a mindset that would allow me to write properly for the type of paper I was assigned; as an example, for research papers I realized my writing should still be descriptive, but concise, just enough information to get my point across. Having a variety of writing techniques allowed my style of writing to change and become versatile; now I am enabled with the tool of being able to channel my language in writing from technical to creative when desired. This skill was adapted through trial and error in my writings through my senior year until I was able to focus on changing back and forth between styles. I would dabble with different types of sentence structures. With experimenting with different writing styles, I was fortunate enough to have an English teacher who exposed me to different formats of papers where I could practice; for example, APA, MLA, and
Throughout the progression of this course I learned countless things concerning my writing. {Simkin, M. G., Crews, J. M., & Groves, M. J. (2012). While it’s there’s a many amounts of things ‘ve learned throughout the course, there are several things I‘ve learned which include the step by step process, including the correct usage of grammar and properly proofreading my work before I turn it in. I found out i had a major problem with my punctuation usage and insufficient when it came my periods and commas. I’ve invested some time writing through grammarly and other helpful sites to improve my writing skills. I appreciate the assistance and help I received from Mrs. C
Like transforming from a caterpillar to a butterfly, my writing style transformed from something mediocre to something quite exceptional. In high school, even when I took advanced placement English and Literature courses, I was never good at writing. My writing would lack structure, reasoning, syntax, and a well-defined thesis statement. My inadequate grades on writing assignments lowered my self-esteem, so I assumed I would never enjoy writing papers because I believed I could never improve. However, since attending a university my writing style has improved far beyond my expectation. My EN 101 course enhanced my understanding of the different ways I could approach my writing. Also, it enhanced my comprehension of outlines to complete assignments. Investing quality time into my writing made a substantial difference because I became a stronger writer. Through the late nights, constant revisions, and agonizing head traumas, I learned that my writing is truly spectacular whenever I incorporate well-defined thesis statements, provide sufficient supporting evidence, and maintain a clear focus in my assignments.
It is essential to understand that classes taken in grade school do not give students a full understanding of each subject. With the topic of writing, there will always be a new lesson to learn, an aspect to improve, or a differing way to explain. Author Craig Vetter states in Bonehead Writing, “This is your enemy: a perfectly empty sheet of paper. Nothing will ever happen here except what you make happen.” Each story, essay, or response comes from a writer’s experiences. With each attempt at a new piece comes an underlying story of emotions the writer is facing. Each person’s writing is unique and the ideas people have are related to their past experiences and what they believe to be familiar with when deciding which writing style to use. As a high school student, I have learned many things about writing that helped me become the improved writer I am today, but the most essential advice I have received is practice makes perfect. Although there is no actual perfect way of writing, I have discovered that each essay I write, my writing improves. It is easier to spot mistakes, find areas to improve, and ponder elevated word choice to use.
During my time spent in the English 110 I endured a writing style of APA that was barely introduced to me in high school. The most beneficial things I learned throughout my research process this year is the use of the writing center and librarians , the online databases, and the moodle forum post allowed me not only to succeed in English 110, but will give me beneficial techniques to use in future papers I will have to write.
Writing was never a known weakness of mine. However, I could never confidently call it a strength. Throughout the course of this semester, my writing style has evolved and I have rid my writing of many habitual mistakes. I have learned to appreciate writing much more, and enjoy the moments where my mind meets words on a paper. Creativity has always been one of my strong suits, but through this course I catered my creativity to compose a variety of essays and speeches. Likewise, public speaking is something that I did not struggle with in the past, yet the structure of the class required a video speeches which was fairly new to me. All in all, I have been able to identify and modify gaps in my composition of writing and speech as a result of this course.
Whenever I get a writing assignment for class, it seems like a chore. I don’t have a problem with writing, but papers always seem to take more time than they should. Maybe this is due to poor planning on my part, but essays are usually an ordeal, and I dread actually doing the work to finish one. The task is simple enough, but putting it off always seems like a better alternative to writing. I do think about the paper that I have to write, but I do not put thoughts and ideas into a paper or outline until I absolutely need to do so. From the moment I am given an assignment sheet, I begin brainstorming about the paper. I may not use any of these ideas, but I think of them. I also have a tendency to forget good ideas, which leads me to think
The writing of my college essay was quite a process. Normally for me writing comes rather easy, I do not struggle putting my ideas on paper. At first I thought that this essay would be simple to do and not be very stressful. It turned out to be quite the opposite in fact, just brainstorming was a struggle for me. It was difficult for me to think about my life and how it is special. To me, the events that have shaped me do not seem that relevant, at 18 I had never really payed much attention to how certain things affected me, I just lived my life. eventually , with the help of Mary, I came to the realization that having my summer taken away from me due to a broken foot had really changed my life philosophy, it truly changed who I was and my outlook on life.
One of the tips that has really helped me the when writing and improving my writing is, write your thoughts before organizing them. My mind flows when I am writing a paper or thinking about the topic and I sometimes forget to write everything down, so before I write a paper I sit down and really think about my topic, then I just write words and phrases that come to mind so that when I start my paper I have a general idea about what I want to write.
Thank you for allowing me to read your paper. This is a great start to a well written final product.
The rubric for blogs/journals has four critical elements. The first is critical thinking and reflections. This refers to being able to support your claim with either personal experience, learning, or logical thought. The second critical element is Integration and Application which means that you are able to show you understand the module content and gave careful consideration while answering the topic. Voice is the next critical element and it means that you are able to express yourself and reach your audience in an appropriate writing style. Writing is the last critical element and it means that your paper is free of grammar and spelling errors.
I felt rather confident with my first draft until I read your comments and reread it myself to see that there were so many things that could be altered. One significant revision was in the intro paragraph where I had to rephrase quite a few sentences as well as making sure that paragraphing was clear. I made sure to make these changes noticeable to the reader by allowing the sentences to offer more substance to the reader. In the body, I mainly added multiple sentences here and there in order to give evidence or to help in clarifying a point that was being addressed. I also added more specifics to the advice aspect that I intended to give the reader, however, I let it remain kind of ambiguous as I want to get the reader to think for themselves a bit, in regards to how they take the information I offered to find a solution in response to the liberal and the conservative opinions. Concluding the letter, I also added more sentences to offer the reader more insight to the importance of the points being expressed. I added in vague solutions, in an attempt to give the reader room to come up with their own final solutions.
There are many writing styles that many people pick up as they go through there many years of schooling. Each person picks up the same type of writing styles but as years go by people seem to pick up there own little types of writing style that separates them from everyone else. As I have gone through many years of English classes I have acquired more and more skills and many more are sure to come as I continue my education. My writing skills have only gotten better from the time of ninth grade English class until today. Since my days back in junior high school I was only taught the basic skills to write papers and since then they have grown to make me a decent writer. I have many strengths and also
Writing is great thing, you can bring your voice to life on paper. There are many different types of writing to get people with all personalities a way to interpret their own words. Descriptive essays are my personal favourite. They let you express and help interpret your imagination. They are very unique because you can get into such detail about them. If you can't find a topic to write about just look around to find an idea. Your best friend, a dream, a pet, a celebrity, a musical instrument, there all ideas and topics to write about in your essay. If you know your topic good enough you will be able to get a very well written and detailed essay. My least favorite writing style would be persuasive. The reason this writing style would be
There are many different forms and styles used in writing. Writing is a form of communication that is used to document and express ideas people have. Through the years as people grow and learn knew ways of writing, writing awareness of a person will evolve into a much higher level of thinking. From the first term paper a person writes in high school to the papers they hand in at the college level, the writing will have matured over the years. The authors of writing develop new and more sophisticated ways in expressing themselves through the words they use in writing. Throughout history writers have found ways in which they can achieve the goals of gaining the readers attention and keep them interested. A good form of
What creates your specific style (what separates one of you from another when it comes to presenting ideas)? A writer’s style is what sets his or her writing apart and makes it unique. Style is the way writing is dressed up (or down) to fit the specific context, purpose, or audience. Word choice, sentence fluency, and the writer’s voice - all contribute to the style of a piece of writing. How a writer chooses words and structures sentences to achieve a certain effect is also an element of style. Style is not a matter of right and wrong but of what is appropriate for a particular setting and audience.
