President Trump is not correct that this alliance is obsolete. NATO is incredibly relevant in society today and implements policy and action across the globe. As recent as April 12, 2017 following a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, the president affirmed the United States commitment to the alliance. NATO is now doing more to combat terrorism and has made the necessary changes to realign the United States with their collective interests according to Trump. Then president-elect Donald Trump, stated that NATO did not even discuss terrorism, that the organization was not designed for the ideal. What NATO is doing now is simply not part of its original detail expected as the world has changed since 1949. Jihadists have taken the stage as the new "Red Devil," and the evolving alliance known as NATO wants to survive. The persistence of NATO proves that institutions adapt to changing surroundings to survive rather than die. As Mearsheimer said about states, the key incentive is to survive. States that do not act aggressively get overrun. The same can be said for institutions, if NATO does not go on the advance on occasion, then it will fall into the ash heap of history.
President Trump's initial remarks about the North Atlantic Treaty Organization did weaken the alliance's credibility. NATO was rattled by Trump's accusation that NATO was obsolete, the alliance's largest power seeming to disown the validity of the institution. With President Trump's words, the world was reminded of the fragile system humanity created, government. There is nothing natural about states nor the institutions that seem to organize the chaos. In a world of social constructs, there is that reminder of what if the United States were to leave NATO? There is no international police to stop the U.S. from leaving or protect the "free-loading" countries which depend on the resources of the United States.
