Donald Sterling Racist Comments
There is a question floating around in the NBA (aka the National Basketball Association) community right now. Should Donald Sterling be banned for his racist comments? Yes, I think he should. What he said was not excusable even though he comes from a generation where saying those things is okay. He attempted to get his girlfriend to take pictures off Instagram because “she was publicizing the fact she was walking with a black man.” In his interview on CNN he said the following. “ That’s the one problem I have. Jews when they get successful they will help their people and some African-Americans-- maybe I’ll get in trouble again… they don’t want to help anybody.”
What all was said? Sterling told

Johnson said he didn’t want Sterling to do anything without his permission. Magic Johnson responded, “I feel sorry for him. I really do. It’s sad.” Whereas Sterling had attacked Johnson, Johnson just sympathized him. Sterling is an old crazy man.
Sterling is now charged with a $2.5 million fine and is banned, however, he refuses to pay the fine and won’t accept his lifetime ban. It’s crazy how a man with a $1.9 billion net worth refuses to pay a sum of $2.5 million, but instead, he wants to sue the NBA for his suspension and for attempting to strip him of his ownership of the Los Angeles Clippers. Arsenio Hall, a talk show host, had made a joke about trying to raise $1 billion, and Katt Williams, an actor, rapper and comedian, had given him $1,100 in $100 bills. Even after the cameras had gone off, Katt Williams had not taken his money back. On the show, Katt had said “We are in the Clippers business!” Could Arsenio Hall really be trying to buy the Clippers? It’s doubtful, but what could this mean for Sterling’s ownership of the Los Angeles Clippers? I think someone will buy it and leave Sterling hanging there without a team. There could be others that are actually serious about buying the Clippers. Things are not looking so good for the Los Angeles Clippers owner.
Donald Sterling is begging for forgiveness, but it’s strange that he refuses to pay the $2.5 million fine. He’s super wealthy, yet he
He also shattered the previous single season winnings record by nearly $3 million, making him the first player ever to break the $6 million mark with $6.6 million.
''And this idea of players making large amounts of money also says something uncomfortable about our society, where a ballplayer can make so much more than, say, a teacher. But it's not the fault of the players. The money is obviously there. It seems like the owners have a death wish about the
Racism is prevalent in today’s society and is exposed in the sports industry as well. Various athletes in different sports field experience racism and face it everyday. Social media is a big platform for people to criticize athletes for their failures and success. On the other hand more times than not, racism can be found within the head of organizations of major sports, most noticeably football. The NFL has condoned an abundance of racist actions towards players of Hispanic and African American descent; therefore, the NFL should stop these problems by supporting athletes that take a stand, holding the NFL owners accountable for their actions, and finally, not stereotyping young black athletes into a position based off of racial factors.
Portis owes money to an eclectic group of people. He owes his mother half a million dollars, another half million to a reporter, more than a million to a mortgage company, nearly half a million to the IRS, a quarter million to a casino, and almost half a million in past due child
My story is about Donald Sterling and his racists’ acts towards minors. He was fired because of his raciest acts and the recording saying things about magic Johnson and all black people. This was not his first legal offense against race crimes and I feel like because he got away with it many occasions he felt it was okay to keep doing it. That was the first account of failure against him and the NBA. The second account was the tape. This was a failure because for him to just be okay with saying the things he said about people that supported his team. This was a great failure for any leader of any higher status.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Silver stated, "Mr. Sterling may not attend any NBA games or practices. He may not be present at any Clippers facility, and he may not participate in any business or player personnel decisions involving the team. Also a $2.5 million fine against Clippers owner Donald Sterling will be levied and I will urge the NBA's Board of Governors to take steps to force Mr. Sterling to sell the team.” Eventually the team was sold to Steve Ballmer for $2 billion, whom officially became the Clippers owner on August 12,
After reading about Michael Jordan’s money, I had a few questions. My first question was do rich people have to pay more in taxes than someone who has social status like myself? I understand that pay taxes is not a given to people as a choice, but if Michael Jordan shouldn't have to pay them, then I certainly should not have to. I find it quite foolish to say that someone with more money than any human should ever have doesn't have to contribute to society then no one should have to. I’m hoping I’m understanding the conditions correctly. It is a bummer that it violates individual freedom, but if everyone has to do it then it is more just. I’m more than guilty of going to a professional sporting event, but I still find it hard to understand
Over the past years there have been several incidents of racism thrown at players, either from the fans or fellow players. For example when there were bananas thrown on the pitch at Dani Alves, referring to him as a ‘monkey’ this sort of behaviour is not tolerated at any level of the sport and in England the FA spent millions of pounds on anti-racism campaigns such as ‘kick it out’. Then there is also player to player racist abuse such as when Luis Suarez picked up a ban for racial abuse thrown at Patrice Evra during a match between Liverpool and Manchester United. There has also been incidents of fan to fan racial abuse for example when a small number of Chelsea fans did not allow a black man on a train due to his race. However Chelsea as a club have come out and said that this kind of behaviour is not at all acceptable and there will be repercussions for those involved. This gives the sport a bad representation and a bad image which would lead to negative media reports and less viewers.
In Berri study he found that there was evidence to suggest that the NBA discriminated against blacks. He stated that “black players in the NBA were paid a lower wage than white players for equivalent productivity”. He concluded that coworker’s discrimination does occur in the NBA but also mentioned that there should be farther research to test this conclusion. When looking at hiring discrimination they looked at the NBA draft to see if race played a role in determining a player’s draft pick. They found that there was no evidence to suggest that there were any hiring discrimination. When looking at employment whites where less likely to be cut from the team then black players. With playing time, blacks received more playing time then white
Clippers owner, Donald Sterling was accused of making racist comments in an audiotaped conversation. On April 25, 2014, TMZ published the audiotape of the alleged conversation (Fenno, 2014). The NBA community was outraged by the behavior of one of its own. In response to the recording, Clippers Coach Doc Rivers is quoted as saying, "I think the biggest statement we can make as men — not as black men, as men — is to stick together and show how strong we are as a group, not splinter,
Let me preface this by saying I'm Philly born and raised and I'm a die heart Philly fan if we had a badminton team I would be the number one fan. I've spend most of my life serving our country in the military around the world. We have a problem in America with race and it is clearly illustrated in the Eagles organization. It's starts with the Mr. Lurie because there must be a zero tolerance with ignorant racists behavior. When Riley Cooper was filmed at that concert speaking what was in his heart to security guard and was dismissed from the team for three days and then rewarded with a multi-million contract. What was the message sent to every player in the league and the city of brotherly love? The Eagles condone raciest behavior in there
Whitlock returned to his apartment to find “KKK,” “Go Back To Africa,” swastikas, and more spread out on his walls. Whitlock disappointingly responds, “Oppression, violence, racism, hatred, violence - there 's no need for that" (Whitlock, 2016). Racism should have no presence at sporting events, and relation to athletes, it should be enjoyable memories for people to experience and remember.
The league commissioner Adam Silver said that anyone who does not stand respectfully will face a punishment from the league office which most likely results in a fine. I completely disagree with this rule because what could be a potential fine for NBA players for peacefully protesting a change many would like to see is absurd, I see it as the NBA trying to play it safe and avoid any issues in the media. For example, the NBA said in the exact same memo to every team saying to deal with these issues internally and within their communities. The NBA clearly cares more about the public’s opinion than the opportunity to send a message with their
wrong. With him not wanting to get paid it was more of the respect factor that put into his reason
Dak Prescott, Lebron James, and Andrew McCutchen; three major league sports professionals that are black. Not only are they black, but they also are extensive contributors to the sports that they play and in the community that pay to watch them. What happens when these three men are cut down or criticised just for the color of their skin? More specifically, what happens when sports reporters broadcast their free, uncensored thoughts to the public? Specifically looking at these reporters thoughts, it can be seen that they are biased and are giving these athletes a stereotypical face. These men are claiming themselves as not racist, but in their comments, it can be viewed as otherwise. These sports reviewers, and people in America, are considered racist due to their bias and their stereotypical comments.
