Like many team sports, a successful AFL team requires players with differing physical attributes to contribute effectively to the team. Therefore, it is extremely important to choose players with the appropriate characteristics, fitness components and energy systems for their particular role. The position that is best suited to me is the midfield as players in this position must have strong agility, speed and aerobic capacity . It is evident from a range of fitness tests that I display these qualities to a high standard, which therefore supports midfield being the most appropriate position for me.
Midfielders, among other positions such as the forward pocket, require excellent agility in order to successfully fulfil the role. Agility refers

Speed is the most noticeable feature in the majority of AFL positions, as it is a key strategy to apply when aiming to beat a player and avoid losing possession of the ball. Evidently, speed is the fitness component which I performed best in, as I was placed in the highest rank after completing the forty 40 second meter sprint. This was the only occasion I was in the highest category for a fitness component. This is an important contributing factor to the position of midfield being well fitted to me as “The great modern day AFL midfielders all have great speed and acceleration.”- Langridge, 2010. This is because explosive pace can be utilised in many ways- both in defence and attack. Although it allows the player to dodge players and move the ball forward, speed also enables the midfielder to create space and provide options without being easily defended. A midfielder with effective speed is also able to chase down opponents and get to more contests. (O’Keefe, 2013) Speed is arguably my best attribute in terms of fitness components and its importance in midfield further proves why midfield is best suited to …show more content…
Given the demands of the position, without aerobic fitness a midfielder would be physically unable to perform well. This is the final reason supporting the statement that midfield is the most appropriate position for me. Aerobic capacity is the ability of the heart and lungs to get oxygen to the muscles . Midfielders must display efficient aerobic fitness as they need to provide support to both the defence and attack, constantly moving up and down the field. This is extremely tiring, especially when the midfield needs to help in defence and then is quite hastily required to push hard forward with the ball. (O’Keefe, 2013) According to an article on catapult sports, midfielders cover the greatest total distance, averaging 17km per game. This is when it is important for a midfielder’s aerobic system to be efficient . The most common method of measuring aerobic capacity is the beep test. After participating in this test, I scored 10.6. This falls under the “very good” category , where anything above 11 was “excellent”. This is well above average for my age group and gender, which therefore means my increased level of aerobic fitness would allow for me to successfully fulfil the many roles of a
The decision I made regarding my field position in the game of touch football came down to my varying levels of fitness through each component of fitness. After being tested for power and speed through a timed 20m sprint; coordination, balance and agility via a T-test and cardiovascular endurance by running the beep test my results came back as average across the board. My speed, when compared to the average of the Australian Touch Football team being came within the range of all players. However, my time was outside, on the higher scale, of the range on agility times. Unfortunately, I was unable to take the beep test due to injury but will assume the average of the class' results, which fell short of the range of Australian representative
The midfield player typically covers distances greater than 13kms during a match with more than 70% of this activity being performed at a low intensity. Despite this, studies have shown that the average oxygen uptake for the player to be around 70% of maximum (VO2max) due in part to the 150 – 250 brief intense
Balance is a main priority on the offensive line to ensure that you do not get knocked back into your quarterback. On offense, you want your legs to be the strongest part of your body, because they do the majority of the work (Gerard). On the defensive side, it is more beneficial to have speed with more upper body strength because they use their arms and hands much more (Gerard). Although it is more beneficial to have more strength in certain areas for both positions, it is very important to be physically strong throughout your entire body on both offense and defense because it is a very tough and physical
The game of circle ball consists of a lot of short explosive bursts of energy. For example, sprinting to defend or jumping up to catch the ball. It is a team game but I am going to look at how I can improve an individual’s performance as a defender. Within the game of circle ball there are many demanding factors an individual has to cope with, these being your psychological and physiological state, nutrition and biomechanics. I will produce a needs analysis by taking one major part of each factor so it is more in depth and I can get the best out of the performer in each area. I will also be including a range of academic literature and scientific evidence to back up my opinions and theories. The needs analysis will be in action after the first
By using the SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis for the MANU Soccer Academy, Tom Owen will understand how to utilize the strengths
The Illinois agility test is commonly used in measuring agility in soccer (Kilding et al., 2008; Katis and Kellis 2009; Amiri-Khorasani et al., 2010). The reliability of this test has been reported to be high (ICC = 0.85) (Katis and Kellis
My chosen position on the field is one of the most demanding aerobic capacity on the field today. Physiological demands are Body strength and size is important in winning the ball from a strip off an opponent. Leg strength is needed for when you are about to jump up for a mark. The centre half forward is one that is very hardworking and has a never die attitude. They are also have to sprint to the ball if the ball was spilt on the ground. Then they are able to use there agility and speed to dodge
It may seem overly simplified and obvious to state that player evaluation is critical in generating success and wins on the football field. A coach may have the greatest “system” and an amazing game plan laid out but, without the right players in the right positions the only thing a coach will collect are losses. This is true of coaching recreational and youth football through the professional ranks. Player evaluation is not only about addressing the physical skills needed for specific positions but, it is also about plugging in the right players who posses the temperament and character to lead the team in all critical situations on the field. Coach Trimble has a very
I have been an avid football throughout my growing up, playing for teams and competing to a good level. Not only do I posses this intrinsic love for the game I also have a thirst for relatable knowledge. I always wished to play in center forward, however my ability to fulfil this goal was limited by the mantra that to play up front you have to be tall. The accountant way to judge the effectiveness of a striker is to calculate their goals per game ratio, a simple term that is useful as a basics for comparison. I have therefore decided to research into this area.
Thus, the purpose of this report is to analyse different aspects and contributions to a local game of Australian Rule Football, to determine areas of praise and improvement.
Being a PDM in the AFL is a full time position, and each club often has number of them working with the players. Daniel Healy, PAFC’s PDM from 2011-2013, oversaw the development of 1st to 3rd year AFL players on their list. He helped each player individually, setting skill, conditioning and strength based programs for their on-field development, while setting personal development programs for off-field growth (Healy, 2014). Having a PDM is critical for a player’s wellbeing. Alex Forster stated that his PDM was ‘the most influential person in making my transition to the AFL’ (Forster,
Won All Australian honours on a half back flank last year in the under 18’s as an intercept defender. He provides lots of run off the half back flank, he is a unique size which means he can play on basically any variety of opposition forwards. I think this guy has plenty to give and if a club is looking for any type of defender this guy can fit the
“Good outside back’s these days have to have really good leg-drive on their early tackle plays; he’s consistent, and he has the Melbourne Storm mentality where he’ll do everything he can to find his front.
Moreover, this can be shown in my fitness scores, my Sit and Reach scores have consistently improved and consistently remained at the near maximum range. Additionally, another strength of mine would be my strength, and this can be shown in my fitness scores, with a consistent improvement in pull ups, curl ups and push ups; my scores have remained high and I reached the maximum for sit ups. Although I have many strengths, my weakness is endurance and agility, this is shown in my mile and shuttle run. Moreover, soccer has helped me improve my endurance and agility; however during soccer we have long bursts of energy and then short breaks. Therefore, although my endurance is high, keeping a fast pace when running long distances is very difficult for me, because I have never had that conditioning. Additionally, when there are long conditioning sessions, the pace is kept at a leisurely pace and it is hard for improvement. With that said, my fitness scores have shown a consistent low time
Throughout the course of Athletic Performance II my main purpose was to become a stronger and more explosive athlete on the soccer field. By taking this class I have definitely met and exceeded my purpose for being in this class.
