I would like to join NYC Ladders for Leaders to be able to participate in new opportunities that enables me to experience the beginnings of working in the Computer Science and IT industry. NYC Ladders for Leaders provides internships that are relevant to my interests in technology and computers that many other providers do not have. I, Jonathan Hollander would like to join the Ladders for Leaders program so I can get experience for my future career. I hopefully can learn new techniques to old tricks, how to handle certain situations and more. I hope to get a summer job/internship out of Ladders for Leaders for two reasons the first being: I’m on a set schedule in the summer, I’m not wasting my time over-sleeping and doing nothing. The second being: a future career or experience for my job. I think I can contribute to ladders for leaders by being a role model for future applicants proving to them you can do something with your summer vacation and more importantly life. I once heard a quote that had a major affect on me “one life can make a difference in the lives of many”.

In the schools and also the community we need more leaders. Being a freshman of Lower Richland High school, I want to see students demonstrating more leadership. Often, I see student afraid to say no to peer pressure from other students. I want to see students leading by example. We need more leaders in this community, and less followers. Being a student at the University of Pittsburgh, which is a non-target school when it comes to recruiting for investment banking, I rarely have the chance to interact with recruiters from large investment banks. There are many ways to define leadership, but perhaps the most laconic as well as accurate definition is presented in Peter G. Northouse's Leadership: Theory and Practice book (Northouse, 2013, p.5): "Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal". I was first drawn by the name “NYC Ladders for Leaders” as I strongly believe that leaders aren’t born, but are fruits of creativity, persistence, and most importantly, passion. Because achieving these qualifying aspects of a leader require not only motivation but also the strength to overcome the flaws of the human nature, including laziness and selfishness, a mere minority of the population can succeed as leaders, as pioneers of the future, as heroes of the community. I would like to join Step-Up Chattanooga because I feel like it would be a good opportunity for me to encounter new people, assimilate new things, work on my verbal and nonverbal communication skills with exertion. I want to increase my knowledge on interpersonal management, leadership, and learning skills. I feel that this program will help me increase my teamwork skills as I grow as a young woman as well as critical thinking also. I want this program to help me bring out my most ultimate, supreme potential out. So I can be able to spread it with the rest of the world how great a young,african american woman from poverty can truly rise from nothing.

One reason I would like to be on this team is because it is another opportunity for me to practice my leadership skills that I will be able to perfect and take to college with me and even beyond college. I would also like to be considered for this position as I enjoy collaborating and planning different events with others as is seen with events such as school dances. If I was chosen for this position, such activities would include the different retreats that are planned throughout the year. Since being at Columbus, I have won sailor of the month three times and been inducted into National Honor Society. On this team, we planned and organized many events such as Catholic Schools Weeks events and Leader in Me open houses just as the Senior Leadership teams plans different activities and events. Once I came to the realization that my college years will begin in the next year, everything started to hit me. What have I done apart from school work? In the eyes of the person reading my college application, I would say.. not much. Getting accepted into this program, will definitely provide me with the preparation I need before entering college.I still have to learn how to overcome being introverted, and improve speaking in large groups. From joining the Ladders for Leaders Program I hope to gain confidence, leadership skills, and a better mentality. This isn’t just about me getting the chance to add one more activity to my college applications, no this is also a chance to give back to the people around me. In Good to Great, author Jim Collins believes he and his team have found a set of timeless principles for running an organization successfully. He states these principles “will remain true and relevant no matter how the world changes” (2001, p.15). From what I have read, I feel he is correct in his belief.
