Naegleria fowleri Infection Payton Vandergriff 5th Period Naegleria fowleri infection is a deadly disease caused by a form of protist typically found dwelling within warm bodies of fresh water, such as lakes, rivers, streams and unchlorinated swimming pools. It can also be found within soil or in warm fresh water deposits outside of factories. Naegleria fowleria typically reside within fish or other water-dwelling organisms, but they have been known to infiltrate the human body via the nasal cavity. Once within the body, naegleria fowleri attack the human nervous system and brain. This process is called ‘Primary amoebic meningoencephalitis’ and although such infections are rare, contraction almost always guarantees death. The case fatality rate is over 95%. Once the disease has been contracted, the subject will most likely be dead within five days. The longest running bout of this infection ever recorded was a mere twenty five days, with the shortest being sixteen hours. …show more content…
These symptoms can appear as quickly as an hour after contraction. Because these symptoms are so generic, many people have mistaken cases of naegleria fowleri for the common cold, which has resulted in many misdiagnoses and eventual deaths. Secondary symptoms of the disease include confusion, hallucinations, lack of attention, ataxia (meaning a loss of coordination), and seizures. Eventually, the patient lapses into a coma where they later die, still within this comatose state. While the patient is comatose, the amoeba consumes the brain piece by piece. Naegleria fowleri can be stopped but once the patient drops into a coma, the survival rate becomes even bleaker. The survival rate, which is already miniscule at less than 1%, morphs into a number even smaller than its predecessor. Only Amphotericin B, an anti-fungal drug, has proven to be effective against the likes of naegleria

Florida Hospital for Children in Orlando said that Sebastian DeLeon who is 16 survived a rare brain-eating amoeba that he obtained when he swam on private property in Broward County earlier in August. Dr. Humberto Antonio Liriano, who is a critical care physician said that Sebastian is doing really well especially since he’s the fourth person in the United States to survive the Naegleria fowleri parasite. So all in all he’s doing much better than most people who die after 12 or 13 days due to the infection/parasite. The only way the brain eating amoeba can infect you is when it forcible goes up your nose leading directly to your brain. After Dr. Dennis Hernandez who was the ER doctor on duty identified symptoms of meningitis, he did a lumbar
V. vulnificus infections do not spread directly from one person to another and are a serious health threat predominantly to persons with underlying illness, such as liver disease, or a compromised immune system. The organism is a natural inhabitant of warm coastal waters. Infection can occur after a wound is exposed to warm coastal waters where the V. vulnificus organism is growing. Infection may also be acquired by eating raw or undercooked seafood from those waters. (CDC, 2014)
In the bitter cold air of the North Pole, at the very center, stands Chionothyella’s (she-unce-E-Allah) tall and beautiful castle filled with anything imaginable. Chionothyella is the goddess of all falling snow and blizzards. She travels from place to place making it snow beautiful, very different and dainty snowflakes. She creates blizzards in an attempt to be intimidating towards the other, more powerful gods for she is very envious of their power. She doesn’t enjoy the company of others; she likes to be by herself where she isn't bothered so she can focus more on working on her powers and snowflakes. She is first cousins with Poseidon and alliances with Boreas, god of winter and wind. She also has a vicious pet Cerberus that is only obedient to her. The dog is named Xena. She is a sinewy and mighty guard for her palace. Mostly to keep other gods away because Chionothyella wants to make the entire universe covered in her snow and eternal blizzards that she puts
The video addressed meningococcal bacteria and its effects on individuals who have contracted the disease. The PBS NOVA program, “The Killer Disease,” is a fast spreading bacterial infection which affects either the spinal cord, spinal cord and brain, or brain with the bacteria. When discovered and treated, the pace and quickness of the spread of the disease after it has begun “the beginning of the end” in terms of the damage to body or taking of life.
Citrobacter Freundii is a species of bacteria that can be potentially harmful to humans. It is known to cause meningitis by protruding into the brain and replicating itself (1). The Citrobacter species has also been found as a cause of some urinary tract infections, diarrhea, and even gastrointestinal diseases and symptoms (3). C. Freundii can be located in a wide variety of soils and water (3). Lastly, it is also the cause of many nosocomial infections due to its presence in water (1).
For us to properly learn about culture, we must understand the meaning of cultural relativism and ethnocentrism. The two concepts challenge one another. Reading the article, we must pull away from our ethnocentric views and think critically about the Nacirema people's. However, the description of the culture creates an ideology that is hard to agree with. For example, the Nacirema peoples take part in a rite that involves hog hairs and magical powders. The Nacirema rituals do sound strange and displeasing but, we have to learn to recognize our ethnocentric judgments.
Gaze at the timeline of history and one will stumble across selfish acts that have dominated our era – acts that have defined people’s true character and make a firm line for where their morals stand. It is rare to find a person that will put their needs before any others in the moment simply due to it being their first instinct – people whose morals are designated to helping others at all cost before their own. Morality is not defined by skin color, race, or social class; it is defined by the good intentions people have for others solely for who they are, despite what race they may be. Within To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper lee, a plethora of characters such as Mr. Underwood, Calpurnia, and Link Deas radiate true morality with the actions they portray. Whether it be by giving the respect to someone they deserve despite what race they might be, or not sitting back and watching an innocent person suffer despite what troubles may lead down the road, these characters put aside the racial quota within Maycomb. They don’t let the label of “blacks” let them see who the person really is, they define the person by their character and who they are on the inside and not what’s seen on the out.

Vibrio is a rod shaped bacteria that are also gram negative. They naturally appear in marine or estuarine environments. Also to note there are around about 12 species vibrio that have been known to cause diseases in humans which cause around about an estimated 80,000 illnesses, 500 hospitalizations and 100 deaths ever year in the US. The main reason that people get infected by vibrio is from coming into contact with seawater or through consuming raw or undercooked seafood. Vibriosis usually causes primary septicaemia (blood poisoning), diarrhoea, wound infections, or other extra intestinal infections. Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a strain of vibrio that has a rod shaped is usually found in saltwater and if ingested can causes gastrointestinal
Meningococcal disease is a disease that can be found worldwide. Meningococcal disease refers to any disease or illness that is caused by the type of bacteria called Neisseria meningitides, also called meningococcus (Meningococcal disease, 2015). The first documented outbreak was over two hundred years ago in Geneva in 1805 which circulated rapidly and killed thirty three people. The first case ever recorded in America was in 1806 in Medford, Massachusetts (Fredericks, n.d.). A European physician, Professor A Weichselbaum, discovered the cause of the mysterious cerebro-spinal meningitis illness in 1887 and Penicillin was the first antibiotic used to fight the disease. In 1978 the first
Orwell explores many themes in Animal Farm, including Manipulation, lies, deceit and corruption throughout the book. The commandments being changed from "all animals are equal" to "all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others" shows all four themes in one.
N. meningitides specifically is carried in nasal mucosa and secretions and concentrates in the nasopharynx of those it will infect (Smeltzer, Bare, Hinkle, & Cheever, 2010). Once the offending bacteria reach the central nervous system (CNS), it replicates and undergoes lysis, which releases endotoxins (Porth & Matfin, 2009). These cell
Cannabis, also commonly known as marijuana, is the most widely used illegal recreational drug. Recreational drugs are used to alter states of consciousness and heighten mood. Out of all recreational drugs, marijuana use ranks among alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine use. Marijuana refers to dried leaves and flowers from the Cannabis sativa plant. When smoked or ingested, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is absorbed through the bloodstream and carried to the brain and other organs. THC is a mind-altering chemical that attracts most to the drug because of the “high” it gives. Marijuana causes the user’s eyes to redden, increases heart rate and relaxes muscles. It may also cause mouth dryness and increased feeling of hunger. Studies have shown that marijuana is the safest of all recreational drugs but it is still classified under schedule I controlled substances by the government. Schedule I controlled substances are drugs with high potential for abuse. Because of this, marijuana is grouped with drugs such as heroin, LSD, and ecstasy and is illegal to possess or consume. Recently, the use of medical marijuana has increased greatly. Some doctors argue that it can be a safe and effective treatment for the symptoms of cancer, AIDS, glaucoma, and other conditions. There has been an intense debate over the legalization of marijuana for medical and recreational use. Unfortunately, many helpful aspects of marijuana are overlooked by government officials and those that oppose
Cryptosporidiosis is a parasitic disease caused by coccidial species of the genus Cryptosporidium. The parasite is covered by an outer shell that allows it to live outside the body for extensive periods of time and makes it resistant to chlorine-based sanitizers (Rossle & Latif, 2013). Cryptosporidiosis has been identified as one of the most usual causes of waterborne disease in humans worldwide. Cryptosporidium lives in the intestine of infected humans or animals and is passed in the stool of an infected person or animal (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012). Millions of Cryptosporidium parasites are discharged in a bowel movement from an infected human or animal. Infection usually happens by ingesting the parasite accidentally. Cryptosporidium may be found in soil, food, water, or surfaces that have been infected with the feces from humans or animals carrying the disease (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012).
