International politics offers many examples of both globalization and localization. Currently, a trend from localization to globalization has been ignited by technologically advanced communication. Both globalization and localization have costs and benefits that effect a country's politics, economics, and culture.

To begin, globalization is a process of nations, corporations, and individuals moving from a national level to an international level. James Rosenau states, "Globalization seems appropriate to denote the something that is changing humankind's preoccupation with territoriality and traditional arrangements of the state system (Purkitt, 15)." Now, the ruble (Russian currency) is falling. The current government is being challenged as the promises for a better economy are failing. Political globalization has cost the government its respected authority, as well as put the country in a financial crisis (Wines, 1-3).

Along with politics, economic globalization has many costs. As the marketplace for selling products and services becomes international, competition between international corporations for the lowest prices shifts jobs to where labor is cheaper and environmental restrictions are less strict. Usually, corporations will move production to third world countries (like South Asia), because labor is cheap and there are very few environmental restrictions. When a corporation moves its production out of a larger country (like the United States) because of high production costs, it creates large amounts of unemployment, in turn hurting the local economy. For example, in a Dateline news investigation, the news team found that Wal Mart, who claimed they produced American-made goods, had ended a contract with a U.S. sweater manufacturer in order to produced its clothing line in South Asia. In South Asia, sweat shops (which are cramped, poorly lit, factories where laborers, mostly children, work long hours with few breaks, seven days a week) are enticing American corporations with cheap labor.
