Winfried Schleiner argues about the significance of names in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, specifically those of the main characters, Viola and Orsino. Schleiner argues that the names chosen for each character specifically in Twelfth Night, but also outside pieces, are always chosen with a purpose or reason. He argues that the names of the characters tend to display a hidden message or help to further develop the themes and tones of a particular piece. Looking more specifically at Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, evidently, the play displays a romantic melancholic mood as Viola is unable to pursue her feelings of love, and Orsino's way of being is captivated by the idea of being or having someone to love. Schleiner deepens his analysis by considering the background behind little bear in some cultures: "the bear is animal vere melancholicum… a truly melancholic animal." (Schleiner, 1). The use of melancholy through Orsino makes it easy to argue that the selection of a name such as Orsino, with such direct correlations to melancholy, was one made purposely. Schleiner also points out ways in which the name Viola is flawlessly chosen to work with and further develop the characters around her. He discusses the Latin translation of 'Viola', which is "violet". Schleiner considers the use of violets in the renaissance period in relation to melancholy: "… in the Renaissance violets were generally considered a medication against melancholy." (Schleiner, 2). Shakespeare's work supports and confirms these ideas through his keen and consistent sense of melancholy throughout the whole of Twelfth Night.
