Naomi Kline and Bill Mckibben offer alternate conceptualizations and articulations of the impending climate crisis and possible strategies for resistance in This Changes Everything and Eaarth. There are some areas in which the two authors seem to align their views and others where they diverge significantly. Both narratives are placed in the context of climate crisis and both authors are frank their assessment of where we are currently and where are inevitably headed as a planet. Kline highlights ideology and economic structure as foundational factors and McKibben seems to tacitly if not explicitly agree. This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. The Climate, a book written by Naomi Klein, is about climate change and the attitude of people towards it. The book is basically trying to show that the powerful politicians and organizations deny the climate change because of they are self-centered. Klein tries to motivate common people to raise their voice against such activities done by the self-centered people and declare a climate crisis. Klein’s book is highly controversial as there are many people who do not believe in climate crisis and they do not think there is any self interest behind this fact. In this paper, I am going to explain why this book is the most rewarding and opportune text for our course.

Naturally the capitalistic world that we live in breeds competition, in turn leading to powerful private interests. This has resulted in powerful industrial partnerships with political figures. In order to bring our society forward we must act for change, to encourage modernization, overcoming the stacked odds. The only way to influence our country’s dependency on carbon-based energy is to make way for environmental advocates at all levels of policy. The Paris Climate Change efforts have us headed in the right direction, even though they hold no legal international clout. Individual countries are held responsible through the social pressures created by groups like the UNFCC, along with renewable industrial interests, has led to country social responsibility. Country social responsibility has been promoted by voluntary climate efforts, which resulted in ambitious goal allowing countries to claim leadership on a global issue. Our efforts would ideally result in net-zero emissions in developed and developing countries alike by 2050. The technology is available, but modernization has a social aspect as well. This is essential to promote environmental policy, in order to pressure industrial powers. We can only be successful if we change our current social patterns into virtuous environmental forms.

In places such as South America where deforestation is prominent, nations should conserve and protect more land. For the sake of water quality, it is right for the agriculture industry to cut back on the use of harmful fertilizers and pesticides. In countries where many forms of air pollution are unregulated, it is ethical for these nations to set more restrictions on pollutants such as PM. Just as with other air pollutants, it is right for countries to regulate greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide in order to slow the rate of climate change. While these decisions are ethical, nations will not make them without a cost. Connections between modern industries and pollution are prominent, and change will be difficult. For this reason, governments must break down the wall separating conservation and advancement. Although some may believe they will have no effect on climate change, the United States should take greater steps in becoming a global leader of environmentalism. Environmentalism has long been accused of being a condition of the affluent – a veritable luxury of the first world condition, despite a resounding deficiency of empirical data to support this assumption. A number of studies countering this point of view are being disseminated, potentially dismantling these postulations (Brechin 1999; Fairbrother 2012; Ignatow 2006; Mart’inez-Alier and Alier 2012), though the cultural disparity explaining a wide variety of environmentalist concerns remains difficult to explain (Brechin 1999), albeit important. Understanding commonalities, more so than polarities, will prove invaluable as we enter an era of globalization and face increased conflict over resource scarcity. A unified approach to solving environmental issues is imperative.

Even though there has been increased activism and awareness of environmental issues, the environment is simultaneously depleting at a more rapid rate. Although addressing individual environmental perception and organizational flaws could create visible change, the most significant solution to environmental issues is found at the level of reforming practices at the macro-level, since the relationship between the government and capitalism perpetuates the largest-scale environmental harm.

Ecotopia, by Ernest Callenbach, is a 181 page fictional novel centered around the philosophy of environmentalism. Published in 1975, the piece was conceived during a period of intense political action. In America, the seventies was a decade characterized by a significant push toward progressivism in terms of women's rights, anti-war movements, and in creating contemporary beliefs about environmental issues. Ecotopia draws upon this time-frame in an almost self-aware manner, giving it the ability to translate into the 21st century quite appropriately. This awareness allows it to establish the tone of not only an inspirational novel, but a social commentary as well.

In the wake of nuclear threats, and ever-industrializing world, environmentalism was conceived. People began to finally consider how the actions and needs of humanity were negatively impacting the physical world around us, and began to become a voice in opposition to environmental degradation on many different levels. While environmentalism in the past has often been pure in intent, many of the goals involve governmental change, and forgo focus on the individual. While regulations and laws in favor of the environment are obviously positive, they are worthless if they are not implemented on an individual level. Individual and local efforts, in terms of environmentalism, are often the most impactful and effective, eventually leading to change on a larger scale. With this idea in mind, environmentalism cannot just be something that occurs in wake of a threat or focuses on large-scale rules and regulations; it must work on shifting the perspective of individuals on a personal level.

Imagine a landfill. Trash scattering the ground, filth spewed across everything, a terrible stench burning your nose. Now look up to the sky. Instead of of a clear blue sky, with white fluffy clouds, you see thick green smog. Now imagine that this isn’t a landfill, but your home, your town, your state. your country, your world. It’s a reality. Every thing covered in waste. This is what our world would be like without the Environmental Movement. It is important to fully develop a greater understanding of the Environmental movement; and appreciate the impact this subculture has made on society, the earth, and the political impact it has made overtime.
