On February 16, 1808, French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Spain, thus began the Peninsular War, and forever staining Goya’s perception of humanity. Between 1792 and 1815, the Napoleonic Wars pitted Spain, Portugal, and Great Britain against France. On March 19, 1808, French armies invaded Spain and violently seize Pamplona and Barcelona, and forced King Charles IV of Spain to abdicate to the throne. More guerrilla warfare ensued; but ultimately, Napoleon took political control over Spain and his brother, Joseph, was proclaimed the new king of Spain on June 15, which caused an uprising in Madrid and attacked the French occupation on May 2, 1808.
