Boom boom, boom boom. I heard the beating of my heart as I picked myself up from the ground. Trailing 1-0 with just over a minute left to play, the referee had blown the whistle for a penalty kick, and my coach was calling my name to take it. I stepped up to the spot, it was the last play of the game. I stared into the keeper's eyes. Left or right, left or right. He blew the whistle. Strategically placing the ball into the lower right corner, I could smell the celebrations, I could hear the parents and teammates chanting my name, but instead, all my senses were snapped back to reality when the keeper hit the ball out of bounds. That was it, I had the chance to win the championship for my team, and I blew it. …show more content…
I fell in love with the competition, the strength, the reliance on others, the character building, the relationships, being humble in victory, and graceful in defeat. Playing a team sport, and being raised in a family that has been all soccer all the time means that one of my main, and favorite, teachers have been the beautiful game. While I knew I had let my whole team down, after the countless losses I had been a part of, I was able to quickly put the defeat aside and remember that winning games never make anyone better. It is the losses and failures that mold me not only into a better athlete but into a better

than visit a city I had not been to. I had to take a trip to Texas for my nephew’s high school graduation, so I decided to come a few days earlier to visit Austin. I chose Austin because I heard it was a very vegan-friendly city and I was also curious to experience a blue city in a red state. As a teenager, I attended high school in San Antonio, Texas for a couple of years and despised it, therefore, I hoped Austin would alter my perspective of Texas.
Three weeks before school was due to start I booked my flight to return to Texas. Mom, Lester, Imani, Shay, and Johaly were sad to see me leave, but I had to get back into the swing of things and get all of this partying out of my system. Lester offered to take me to the airport, but I declined and let Shay take me instead. I knew that Lester taking me wouldn’t be a good idea because of what had happened between the two of us. I still couldn’t believe that I’d had sex with my stepdad. This would definitely be a summer that I’d never forget.
After a few trips, my student started seeing the big picture and started excelling, or so I thought. At a company terminal in south Texas, we were afforded an opportunity to pick our next load. I always told my students that when I thought they were ready, they could pick their next load if possible, and then all activity concerning that load was on them to complete. My reasoning was that if they couldn't do it with me in the truck, they won't do it by themselves. Makes sense to me!

That was all my fault I got distracted and it's gonna be my fault if we're going to lose the biggest game of our lives!! I thought in my mind if we were gonna win, I'd have to be twice as determined than I had been at any other game. Not one ball could get through me not even one. Half time was now over. I go on the field along with my other teammates. The whole time during the game not one ball got through me and I was feeling good. Finally, the moment of truth came. Anna, our forward, had the ball and in what seemed like two seconds she scored. 2 to 1! We won the game!!! Parents are cheering from the bleachers. Although there were still 2 minutes on the clock the other team had already given up. They were just trying to get past Julia, who wouldn't even let them past the defense line. At last the whistle sounded, the game was over, and we got our
Silence. It was too quiet for a Manhattan neighborhood. My eyes slowly opened, welcoming sunlight in, as I looked around my room, I strained my ears to catch for any sounds. I decided to get up and figure out why our usually bustling neighborhood went from noisy to quiet. Walking down the stairs, I was welcomed to a totally destroyed living area, all my furniture against the door, all my windows boarded up with multiple nails pierced into the board. Creeping towards my kitchen, all my belonging looked as though it had not been touched. Opening the oak cabinets, I noticed all my food was in place, including my box of chocolate granola bars, with four left. Grabbing one, I leaned against the counter, my eyes glancing towards the daily newspaper crumpled on the floor. Bending down
