One of my families’ favorite thanksgiving deserts is homemade upside down apple pie. From the smell throughout the house to the pie with ice cream on top has become a family enjoyment we have all come to live and enjoy every thanksgiving. Often times, my sisters and I would enjoy conversation and memories while making the pies while the men in the family were sitting together talking about and watching the Dallas Cowboys game. The pies have always served a way of bring all of the girls together to share laughter and stories each year and enjoy a fantastic desert in the process.

We would race to see who could crack the most pecans and even throw the shells at each other while we were laughing the whole time. While we were doing this my mom would grind the cinnamon; watching and laughing with us; till she had one and one third teaspoons. When my mom thought we had enough pecans she would take here rolling pen and wax paper to break the pecan pieces till we had half a cup. Once all of the apples were peeled she cored and cut the apples into half inch wedges and placed them in a bowl off to the side. In the large mixing bowl Terry then took the granulated sugar, Kathy got the flour, Vicky got the remaining butter and I got the cinnamon and we all took turns pouring in our ingredients. Kathy took the spoon and began to mix the ingredients together at which time we each took some of the sliced apples and placed them into the big mixing bowl to get gently tossed and coated. Once this process was completed my mom spooned the apple mixture into the pie crust. She unrolled the second pie crust and placed it over the apple mixture trimming and folding the edges together to seal taking a knife and cut four one-inch slits into the top
The crisp, cool, and cinnamon air filled the morning of Thanksgiving in 1987. Although I was only two years and eleven months old, I remember the scratchy, fuzzy, purple- footed pajamas that I was wearing that morning. After I woke up, I "helped" my mom make her famous orange- cranberry relish, got dressed in my cream sweater dotted with cherries and my navy pleated skirt, topped off with my favorite cream fuzz- warn tights, and before I knew it we were out the door to my grandmother's house. After an early dinner with my grandparents, mom, and dad, my grandfather and dad left to catch the Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving Day football game, leaving the rest of us to find entertainment of our own.
Heavenly smells in the air, footballs on T.V, family is gathered around, and a comfortable homey feel of my grandmother’s house makes Thanksgiving one of my favorite meals of the year. I will always have memories of thanksgiving at my grandmothers. The smell that rushes your nose as you walk in to the house. So many mouthwatering smells go through the air at my grandmother’s thanksgiving. Her Thanksgiving dinner never fails to fulfill my expectations. With the whole family gathered and the dinner table full of delicious food, I can’t help but feel content.
First, I must admit that I have never had a Christmas without tamales. Christmas is a very special time for my family because this is when we all try to get together. Christmas in our family is not about what gifts you’re going to exchange with one another but about spending time with those you love while eating one of your favorite foods, tamales. When my siblings and I were young my mom would always make tamales, and champurado, a thick hot chocolate for us for Christmas. As my sister and I got older we would put on hairnets and oversized aprons, this attire was required by my mom, so that we could help her make tamales, we quickly learned that making tamales is a lot of work but we enjoyed spending time together

This year Thanksgiving is on November 23,2017. Every year my family Thanksgiving is the best, to me at least. So we always have Thanksgiving at my Grandmas and Grandpas, but not this year we are having it at my house. Which I mean could be good and bad. Good is it is at my house so it’s cool and bad, the house has to be completely spotless or my mom will freak out. Normally what we do every year is we get my family together and have dinner, mess around, and watch football. This year my dad's brother is coming with his three daughters and his wife and my grandpa and grandma. It’s the season of fall, almost winter. The leaves turn into a mix of all types of orange colors and the change of decor your mom brings to the house to advocate the time of Thanksgiving or the foods you’ve been waiting all year round to just smash your face into. That’s what I think of when Thanksgiving comes to mind! Out of all the holidays: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years Eve, ETC; my favorite one of all would be Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a time where the problems you had with your cousins,fights with your parents, and even the disconnection between your other family members, when it’s Thanksgiving day though, all those problems are left at the door step.
Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate our joys with friends and family. Unfortunately, if you are the person designated to cooking the holiday dinner, the joys can turn into complete and total fear. I'll never forget the first time I made Thanksgiving dinner for twenty family members and friends. I waited until the last minute to start and the dinner ended in a complete disaster. In the years following that failure, I have learned that preparing a Thanksgiving dinner is easy...if you plan ahead.
One such tradition is not socializing with neighbors but only talking to her sisters or other family members. Both of my great-grandparents came from a large family and so the Sunday was always considered family day. It was nothing to see a yard off of kids playing or see the men playing a game of horseshoes as the women would set out the dinner. However, it was the winter time that holds the most memories for my mother. It was then that the families would all gather at the family pond and go ice skating and the men would build a big fire and everyone would stand around and drink hot chocolate. One such tradition in the winter time was right after the first snow fall of the season. We would take a big mixing bowl and go out and fill that bowl as full as we could. Then she would go in and make a big bowl of snow ice cream (Food in Every County). One bright sunny day, our family was going to Lake Pomme De Terre for a family picnic. Like Shteyngart, I was all set for some grilled hamburgers or hot dogs or even some fried chicken. However, that was not meant to be. Like Shteyngart, is aw food being set out that was I saw food that was familiar to my great-grandmother’s culture. Instead of grilling hamburgers, she set out chicken and noodles, mashed potatoes, green beans and for dessert a shoofly pie, sugar cookies, and schnitz pie, which is made with dried apples (Food in Every County). Pumpkin pie, chocolate cream, whipped cream, and strawberry lemon pie are normally the pies that we enjoy after our Thanksgiving meal. I enjoy a piece of each pie, and so do my cousins, but the adults, normally stick to the chocolate cream pie. My absolute favorite part would be the stuffing, and you can’t forget cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, and cornbread! The cornbread is so good, and I could eat stuffing by the spoonful! Food has to be my favorite part of Thanksgiving, and seeing family!
As a child, my family would celebrate every holiday with grandeur, especially Christmas. We have specific traditions and rituals that we carry out during the season, but the most important of our traditions is what we do on Christmas morning. Our rituals and traditions reflect our values as well as my own of family, unity, and tradition. The morning of the holiday my mother has always woken my brother and I, and then brought us to our dad so we could all walk down to the family room. As we gather in the family room around our tree and presents, my mom serves us each a piece of her Christmas casserole, saved for this special morning. Following our video-taped walk down to our presents, my brother, mother, father, and I open one gift from each other and the first thing in our stocking. After this ritual, my brother and I would go downstairs to our in-law suite where our grandmother lived, to wake up our Mimi and pull her upstairs so that we could finish opening presents and have hot chocolate with our entire family. Days pass until it is a about a day before thanksgiving. It is time to gather the food. We get what we get every year, the traditional mashed potatoes and turkey meal. We head to the grocery store as soon as we have generated a list. My mom leads the way, pushing the cart in front of my siblings and I through each aisle telling us what to get, as she stares into the list as if it is her mission to get everything on that list.
