The true shock came when I brought up the legality of the order. I was told, “I do not care what you do, you cannot do anything to me and nothing you do matters because I am quitting.” My coaches threat only further emphasized that I was in a no-win situation. In varsity tennis, the goal is to win as many matches with the strongest lineup. To establish this, players complete a series of challenge matches, the results of which set a ladder for the season. After preseason challenges, I began the season playing second doubles despite boasting a record qualifying me for the third singles position. I have always tinkered with things. I fiddled with remote cars and miniature trains. Eventually, I graduated to the big leagues; computers! One day my new laptop evaded my grasp and the charging port broke. Reluctant to pay for the repair and in an attempt to downplay the situation, I convinced my parents it was a simple fix. I researched the problem, ordered the equipment and got to work. I followed the instructions to a “T” and all was going perfectly. I began desoldering the jack, but as I neared the end I couldn’t seem to get it free. Hours of troubleshooting yielded nothing until I decided to give it one last aggressive attempt. This time, I heated the solder enough to free the jack. I felt like I was on top of the world. I soldered the new jack and reassembled the computer. I plugged my new charging cable in and… nothing. My heart sank, What did I do wrong? A resistor, I overheated the motherboard and it popped off. Reluctantly, I took it to a specialist. My mistake cost us 210 dollars. I was three years wiser and more mature, carrying the self-confidence that comes with it. This time, knowing what pitfalls to avoid, I repaired my computer with ease and saved 130 dollars. Tinkering has taught me to be resourceful and an effective problem solver, however, convincing my coach was a completely different sport. My experiences in scouting have taught me to be patient, analytical, and calm in the face of adversity. I strive to see the big picture and appreciate other's perspectives. Unfortunately, I was unable to see eye to eye with my coach and get through to her to resolve the issue logically. We were at loggerheads, I concluded that I had to compromise with her and take the initiative to present an offer which would appeal more to her than to me. Throughout the ordeal, I was determined to resolve the dispute without my parents assistance knowing that in the future, whether it be college or work force, I will be making my own decisions.
