Lone Survivor There are real life superheros in today’s society. Some examples of these real-life superheros are police officers, firefighters, and soldiers. Soldiers are the bravest out of all, because they go to war, risking their lives everyday. The incredible true story of Marcus Luttrell, a Navy SEAL and his three comrades, Michael Murphy, Matthew Axelson, and Danny Dietz is one of the most inspiring stories ever. The movie Lone Survivor was created based on the real events that took place in 2005. Marcus and his three SEAL comrades were sent on a mission, code named Operation Red Wings. The mission required them to find Ahmad Shah, a Taliban militia leader that was killing American soldiers. The four men were flown into the heart of Afghanistan in a Chinook transport helicopter and were dropped off into the unknown. When their boots hit the ground in the mountains, it was dark and rainy. The four soldiers hiked for hours in the rain, struggling to keep their balance in the rugged terrain. After walking the exhausting miles, they arrived at an area in the mountains overlooking where Shah was taking refuge, and waited until morning. The four soldiers hunkered down behind logs and rocks and waited until sunrise. Marcus hid himself under a fallen tree, when he heard footsteps directly in front of him. He looked up and saw a middle-eastern man holding an axe. The SEALS had been discovered not by the Taliban,
Lone Survivor is an autobiography, written by Marcus Luttrell. Marcus tells us the story of his childhood, his training to become a navy Seal and his first hand eyewitness account of the disastrous operation RedWing. Operation RedWing was a mission when Seals team 10, including Marcus and his three brothers in arms were assigned the task of hunting down and killing Taliban cell leader Ahmad Shah. During this mission the Navy Seals suffered their worst losses in Seal history since WW2 because about 21 soldiers were killed in action. During this book we see themes of honor, sacrifice and brotherhood.
One weekend, my friend Hannah and I wanted to go on a quad ride during the night. It was during the summer and we were at Hannah’s house and we were bored. So we thought it would be a good idea to go for a ride, so we asked her step dad if we could and he said yes. We both thought it would be super fun to go for a quad ride. So, we get all geared up in proper clothing because it was cold out and off we went.
Change is inevitable. Whether it be positive or negative, change is constantly happening. More than often change can take you from the known world and spit you into the unknown, where you return a changed person. While embarking on the journeys provoked by change, you are on a hero’s journeys. The hero’s journey was popularized by Joseph Campbell. When describing what prompts hero’s journeys, Joseph Campbell said,
In the book,”Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of Seal Team 10”, Marcus Luttrell recreates what happened to him and Seal Team 10 during Operation Redwing in order to help preserve the events that transpired during the mission and to aswell honor the men who lost their lives while operating within it.
Movies are a fun and modern source for entertainment that often try to depict events that took place in real life. Many films based on real life events are often criticized for being inaccurate or altering much of the storyline. Others are also praised for being as accurate as possible and portraying the character’s traits in the best way. The 2013 American war film “Lone Survivor” is one of those movies that did a little of both. This is not necessarily a negative thing as I really enjoyed the movie and thought it was overall a good film and a great depiction of the events that happened in the operation in which the U.S. navy SEALs we involved. There are many war films out there that probably give us a better depiction of what war really looks
Zachari's grandmother showed the QP the court documents the probation officer left that reports he has 20 hours of community services, have no contact with the co-defendants, curfew set by the parent, and contact with his probation officer.
He had about twenty-six days of training under his belt and he was going to get to choose what he thought would be the best people to take with him. Almost fifteen hours later, he arrived. Little did he know he had the best team already setup containing quite a few very close friends that he thought died oversea because he hadn’t heard from them. Altogether there were a total of six of them. Small but great, John thought to himself. The team was small, but had all the skills to pull this off. They had Anthony, Jones, and Cedar as snipers, Aaron specialized in bomb defense, and then there were John and Clay as specially trained foot-troops required in order to finish the job. And before they knew it, they were in action.
It was June, 28th, 2005, Marcus and his team were set up in the Hindu-Kush mountains in Afghanistan scouting out there target when a group of farmers stumble across them. To play it safe they tie them up and debate whether to kill them or let them free. Luttrell, being the team leader, decided since they were unarmed that it would be wrong to kill them so they let them go. However, one of the farmers was a taliban sympathizer and he immediately went and revealed their location to them. This ultimately lead to the team getting ambushed by +30 taliban soldiers. The outmatched soldiers fought tooth and nail although getting severely wounded they continued to fight.
Next, Marco and his squad went into one of the houses to kill the insurgents. They cleared the house. Behind that house was a guesthouse. There were five terrorists in the guesthouse. There were a few palm trees too. Marco ran behind one of the palm trees for cover. The other marines of his squad were behind a narrow wall. Marco found a RPG on his way running for cover behind the palm tree. He picked it up and tried to fire it at the enemy, but the RPG didn’t work. Marco then figured out the RPG had a dual trigger system. He figured it out, and fired it. Marco killed the insurgents and earned the Navy Cross.
The young Marine did everything I would have done in that situation, he didn’t have many options and he worked with what he had, and if it wasn’t for the unknown mines he would have survived. I learned that who you think is the enemy isn’t always the enemy, like how the Marine and the sniper are supposed to kill each other, but instead the sniper believes killing isn’t right and removes the bullet and bandages Donovan up. He also ends up getting himself imprisoned or killed for helping the Marine escape. Through harsh weather, the
Brian Boyle has an unbelievable survivorship story. He goes into great detail from the time he wakes up in the hospital to the time he crosses the finish line of his first full triathlon. He has inspired many people and has beaten all odds.
Luttrell is helped back to the man’s village. The tribe decides to grant him Lokhay, which means the village will provide him with shelter and protection as their own grave risk. The Taliban find Luttrell at the village and the villagers do everything they can to keep Luttrell safe. In the confusion of battle between the village and the Taliban, Luttrell escapes over the wall and stumbles away. Fortunately, he is soon discovered by several US rangers, having operated from a larger battalion tasked with finding any of the remaining members of SEAL team
In drama, story telling, myths, a religious ritual, psychological development and even in life there's a hero's journey. The hero's journey is basically multiple steps describing the adventure of “The hero”. A hero to me is someone who has courage, who did something amazing, someone you can look up to. Even though I am not a typical hero there are times when my life follows the hero's journey with archetypes such as the herald, loyal companion , threshold guardian.
Marcus Luttrell is a navy seal that is on a mission gone terribly wrong and in the end, he is the only survivor... Marcus tells the story this mission went and affected his life and how he does not want the bravery and sacrifices his team mates made to be forgotten. The four men fought for hours against at least a hundred Taliban fighters. Some of the seals already shot, low on ammunition, or badly injured. Even though they were exhausted, running out of men they were determined to do or die. If the team would have held the 2 men and young boy hostage they wouldn't have been detected buy would be on trial for war crimes. So being Americans they done whats right and in the end, it cost them their
