Nat King Cole and Sweet Lorraine
Nat King Cole was born in Montgomery, Alabama, on March 17, 1919. Cole, the son of a Baptist pastor, first learned to play the piano around the age of four with help from his mother, a church choir director. He owes most of his popular musical fame to his soft baritone voice, which he used to perform in big band and jazz genres.
One of Cole's biggest inspirations was Earl Hines, a leader of modern jazz. At the age of 15, Cole dropped out of school to become a jazz pianist full time. Cole married for the first time when he was only 17.
