Nathaniel Hawthorne Nathaniel Hawthorne never fit in anywhere, he moved from Salem, Massachusetts to Maine after his father died at sea. Hawthorne looked for comfort and belonging, he eventually found this in writing. Nathaniel Hawthorne's writing were written with purpose, hard work, and dedication, which eventually led him to become famous. Hawthorne’s early life was not easy. When he was was only 4 years old his father died at sea from yellow fever. Hawthorne’s family was left financially unstable since his father could not support the family. During this time Hawthorne met Sophia Peabody, a painter. They got married on July 9, 1842. The couple settled in Concord Massachusetts. Hawthorne and Sophia had three kids, this caused them to go in debt and made them move out of there house in concord. The family moved to Salem, where Hawthorne got a job as a surveyor at the custom house. Hawthorne eventually lost this job which in return gave him time to write his novel “The Scarlett letter” in 1850, Hawthorne tends to write his novels based in the same town he is settled in. “The Scarlett Letter” was based in Massachusetts. This book was Nathaniel Hawthorns most famous book he wrote. bio.com wrote, “The book was one of the first mass-produced publications in the United States and its wide distribution made Hawthorne famous” (Nathaniel Hawthorne 1). This book made Hawthorne very notable and was Hawthorne’s greatest success. Nathaniel Hawthorne was not comfortable in the town of Salem because his family was trapped in the view of puritans. Hawthorne moved his family to Lenox, Massachusetts. While in Lenox, Hawthorne became good friends with Herman Melville who is the author of “Moby Dick.” Hawthorne did not only write “ The Scarlet letter” he wrote many other famous books during this time including, “House of the Seven Gables”, “Blithdale Romance” and “Tanglewood Tales.” Nathaniel Hawthorne also wrote …show more content…

Many writing he started were left unfinished, his hair started to turn white and his health started to diminish. Hawthorne did not want any medical attention and he died in his sleep on May 19, 1864. Franklin Pierce wrote a private letter addressing Hawthorne’s death. Franklin Pierce wrote, “But he was so very restless the night previous that I was surprised and startled when I noticed, at 3 o’clock, that his position was identically the same as when I observed him between 11 and 12. Listening softly to his bedside, I could not perceive a breath , although no change had come over his features. I seized his wrist but found no pulse ; ran my hand down upon his bare side, but the great, generous, brave heart beat no more… he had passed from natural sleep to that from which there is no earthly waking” (The Death of Hawthorne 2).
