National Art Personal Statement

Being heavily invested in my own art-making practice, I’ve chosen the National Art School over other more stereotypical higher education establishments. I want to receive a traditional education in the fine arts at a place I can call home. The National Art School is that place. From my visits I can say wholeheartedly that the National Art School feels like it’s own little village. The people, the historical relevance of the site, the atmosphere, everything about the campus is one of a kind and I won’t find an experience quite like it anywhere else. The ultimate goal I wish to achieve with my art can be seen as ridiculous or highly unlikely, however I am a man that believes in chance. I believe a society built solely on technology rather than creative expression is little more than a dreary, dead shell of its former self. I try to surround myself with culture, recently picking up learning the guitar, Russian, Dutch, Spanish and writing short stories. These skills will eventually work to my advantage in an ever growing multicultural, skill based world whilst simultaneously allowing me the satisfaction of better understanding each skill’s artistic significance. Writing allows me, much like fine arts, to express myself in creative and engaging ways, connecting on a personal and cerebral level with the audience. There is something magical about creating a picture using nothing more than words or colours and tools that not only appeals to the eye aesthetically, but also to the brain in it’s inherent meaning. As Pablo Picasso once said, “Everything you can imagine is real”, and I am a firm believer in this.
