The National Museum of American History is a museum "devoted to the scientific, cultural, social, technological, and political development of the United States, the museum traces the American experience from colonial times to the present." It holds more than three million objects from history such as the Star-Spangled Banner, Washington’s uniform, Jefferson’s lap desk, and Dorothy’s ruby slippers. It was paid for by the government. On June 28, 1955, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the bill authorizing $36 million for building the museum. On August 22, 1958 groundbreaking took place. In 1964 the museum was established as the Museum of History and Technology. In 1980, the museum was renamed the National Museum of American History. The
