Native Americans have had quite a different amount of struggles ever since the immigration of Europeans into the country. However, the United States government has been able to improvise and slightly help the Natives whose land has been taken away from them. There have been a numerous amount of policies given that have impacted their daily lives. Three of those policies would be the Reorganization, Indian Gaming Regulation, and American Indian Religious Freedom Acts. The Reorganization Act was a policy passed in 1934 (Schaefer, 2014). This was made to have a tribal identity, rather than a pluralistic society movement that the 1887 Allotment Act implemented (Schaefer, 2014). In other words, this Indian Reorganization Act terminated the national government’s power of captivating away Native’s lands and empowered the Secretary of the Interior to take land into trust (Harvard Law Review, 2016). This helped and benefited the Native American tribes hugely. In addition, this Act provided an opportunity for the tribes to have their own constitutions, create corporate arms, elect their own leaders, and instituted a Native hiring preference in federal agencies that could affect the Natives (Harvard Law Review, 2016). For instance, it has been able to provide protection to their beliefs and traditional religious activities (Schaefer, 2014). Many Natives had strong oppressions from other religions and expecting Natives to abandon their religious traditions (Schaefer, 2014). Additionally, when it came to the use of peyote, some states considered it to be illegal causing the Natives to lose their ability to use it (Prue, 2014).
