Everything that was accomplished through bloodshed and savagery to begin civilization could have been done in a way that less people would have died. Prior to the European arrival into the Americas, the Native Americans lived in a civilized, equal and peaceful agricultural society. The Europeans used the Natives generosity as they came for their own advantage. They pretended to befriend the Native Americans, but once they were allowed into their villages they killed them for their land. This cruelty caused the Indian population to decrease in only a matter of years. If the Europeans would have seen the Native Americans equally things could have been different they could have came up with understandings leading to treaties with time. Zinn mentions that “If sacrifices are necessary for human progress, we do not have the right to decide for others for a progress that is not clear” Columbus and his man took many of the natives by force to find gold in their lands.
Native American, or American Indians, have a rich culture comprised of struggle, strife and success. For this paper, i will discuss the Native American Culture and it's history.
Nearly every Native American Indian tribe has experienced some kind of neglect or discrimination. The white man has forcefully moved tribes from their homes, broken
Imagine living in a world that consistently devalues your existence and is heavily populated with individuals who are quick to use and abuse your resources, but are slow to share the wealth that is accumulated from those resources. How would you feel? Unfortunately, certain populations do not have to visualize the disparity that is pictured above. This is because inequity is one of the most demoralizing social issues that plague America today. The worst thing about inequity is the fact that it continues to disproportionately burden individuals who are categorize as being minority in today’s society.
I am writing you today as a young woman concerning the lack of attention towards the violence against women in retrospect to the Native American population. The fear of being a victim of assault as a young women is prominent within the society in which we live today. However, there is some relief in the fact that there are resources available at my disposal if I was to experience assault. Yet, there is a large portion of women that do not have that reassurance, and the likelihood of them experiencing assault is even greater than my own. This portion of the women population is Native American women. I will admit that the severity of the issue in concerns with the native population is something that I just recently became aware of. et I have
Post-bellum America began in 1865 after the Civil War and slavery. Slavery continued in a different form; the African Americans were bound by law to their employer. The Native Americans were forced out of their land and into a different culture. The truth is one ethnic group was not more oppressed over the other. In order to examine the corresponding oppression of the African Americans and Native Americans in post-bellum America it is important to compare their transition into society.
When they sailed across the Atlantic, they ended up in the Caribbean. This is where the Spaniards initiated slavery and forcibly worked a large amount of Indians to death, eventually replacing them with Africans. An example of Spaniards imposing slavery upon Natives was the creation of the encomienda system, which was used to effectively enslave the Indians and seize their land. They started marrying one another and producing mestizos, the offspring of a Spaniard and American Indian. Unfortunately, much of it was due to rape. The negative effects on the Indians were not only the consequence of their mistreatment; a vast amount of people died as a result of the Columbian Exchange, a transfer of animals, diseases, culture, ideas, and more. Specifically, when Europeans came to America, they brought over diseases such as smallpox, measles, and influenza. These illnesses were extremely detrimental for
An often forgotten group of oppressed people are Native Americans. Many gloss over or just ignore the injustices they have faced. Such examples of their oppression are prevalent but often neglected. Such as how they were faced with many injustices from american settlers as they tried to force them from their land , the countless massacres, and lastly the atrocities they faced on the trail of tears.
Ever since white men came to the New World, they were never at peace with the native peoples. One of the first white men to come to North America was Sir Walter Raleigh, who took the Indians he met as slaves as early as 1584. In the years that followed, settlers forced the Native Americans further and further west. By the year 1850, there had been many attempts at peaceful negotiations and uprisings on both sides, but the government eventually decided that reservations were the only way to contain the Indians and have peace. These reservations took away their pride, freedom, and way of life. Native Americans in reservations today are still plagued by lack of food and shelter, health and
Before, during, and after the Civil War, American settlers irreversibly changed Indian ways of life. These settlers brought different ideologies and convictions, such as property rights, parliamentary style government, and Christianity, to the Indians. Clashes between the settlers and Indians were common over land rights and usage, religious and cultural differences, and broken treaties. Some Indian tribes liked the new ideas and began to incorporate them into their culture by establishing written laws, judicial courts and practicing Christianity, while other tribes rejected them (“Treatment”). Once the United States purchased Louisiana from the French in 1803, Americans began to encroach into the Indian lands of the south and west
Natives were humiliated and dehumanized. Spaniards did not see the huge genocide that was going on , they just saw the land they was stealing from the natives and the money they were getting out of it. Time past and more and more settled in what now is called the United States. The Englishmen have settled near the east coast when coming to the Americas. English settlements kept growing so they needed to wipe out the natives out to have the land. “Not able to enslave the Indians, and not able to live with them, the English decided to exterminate them” (page, 19). The Indians learned that Europeans were and will always be stronger than them. They learned that European weapons will always be more powerful then whatever they made. Europeans had guns, Indians had spares. Europeans were devious and trick Indians to turn to each other. Tribes were tricked by these masterminds and started conflicted with each other and battles. The Europeans had mass murdered the native Americans with no sympathy. The native Americans could not do anything about it so they had to listen to the European due to the fact they were more powerful. As for the Englishmen they used any type of excuse to get into war. Europeans called native Americans Indians because when Columbus arrived in America he believed that he was in India so he thought they were Indians, its in politically incorrect but calling them Indians is okay because they truly traveled from Asia to America
Ever since the people from Spain came to Latin America, everything changed. The only reason they came was for three things, gold, god and glory. The native americans saw what they brought like horses and guns. Not only did they came with these new goods the natives never saw before, the spaniards decided to treat them as slaves and take their goods to Spain. This was known as the Columbian Exchange since the natives would give their goods to Spain, and Spain would bring their goods to Latin America. During this Columbian Exchange, the natives got diseases that the spaniards carried with them, causing lots of them to die. Since the spaniards had most
Violence against women didn’t start last year, ut for centries even with the Native Americans. We always assume that Native Americans were always friendly to each other, but they sometimes fought with each other for land and resources. Through Women’s Eyes mentions about that women and their children were more affected than anyone else in the tribe if they are captured. If the tribe is captured, the women and their children became slaves and forced into accepting their capture’s culture. No written documents from the Native American women to prove this, but we have written documents from the Europeans, who were eyewitness to this. Seeing this, the Europeans began to genrate the idea of capturing and owning slaves for themselves and a
Historical trauma, as Maria Yellow Horse Brave Heart expressed, is being carried on the genes of Native people without being notice, is something heavy that cause pain and unconformity that it is slowly killing them. As the article refer that historical trauma is “the cumulative emotional and psychological wounding, over the lifespan and across generations, emanating from massive group trauma experiences.” Meaning that the things that happen in the past are still hurting people now, and it needs a great attention and cultural focus. It is really important to show a true respect to Native American culture, so it will be able to accurately help Native Americans from the roots of the problem. A lot of people will argue that what happen to the Native American community happened long time ago, but according to this article, Healing the American Indian Soul Wound, actually is something that kept on happening not so long ago, for example, “it was only in 1994 that native peoples were allowed to practice some forms of religion without fear of reprisal by state and federal government policies” (p. 345). It is surprising that this was still happening in 1994, which is so recent, and it shows a lot of immaturity from the government on the topic of respecting others as human beings. I actually argue with people that cultural genocide over Native Americans is something that I will not doubt is still happening now. I have a strong belief that
The Spaniards murdered millions of Indians including children and raped women to get what they wanted. The mass murder committed by the Spanish was usually not quick. They tended to torture their victims to be able to acquire every worth resource they had, for instance a man’s, “body was extended, hands bound to a post, and his feet put into a pair of stocks, they all the while applying burning coals to his feet at a tormenting distance, where a boy attended, who by little and little sprinkled them with oyl, that his flesh might roast the better: before him there stood a wicked fellow, presenting a bow to his breast charged with a mortal arrow, (if let fly) behind him, another with dogs held in with chains, which he threatened to let loose at him, which if done, he had been torn to pieces in a moment” (20). The Spaniards were very eager to acquire their riches and would stop at nothing until they got them. However, the fate of the Indians that survived was not any better, since they were enslaved to work hard labor often without food until starvation. This new slaves were sent to Hispaniola and Peru, because these where the places that they would get the best prices. These Natives used as slaves were used in a variety of tasks. These tasks include: building, working mines and even making “War with
