Natural Calamities in Bangladesh Or, Natural Disasters in Bangladesh
Introduction: Bangladesh is one of developing countries of south-east Asia. It is visited by different natural calamities almost every year. Our fate is that we have to survive by fighting against reoccurring natural calamities. Ours is a life of great challenge indeed.
Causes of natural calamities: the world climate is undergoing a rapid and major change day by bay with a negative effect for human habitation on earth. This change in climate is giving rise to a dreadful effect called green house effect. This green house effect is increasing the heat in the atmosphere and releasing poisonous gas all around. It is most dreadful for human as well as other living beings. This gas is largely being emitted by the industrially developed countries of the world. They are emitting this gas more than 70-80 times of the developing countries like ours. The result is that we, the people of developing countries, are getting victims year after year and suffering deadly with the loss of heavy tools of lives and properties. In this way, out lives and properties are now quite at a stake for the unwise and whimsical activities of the advanced countries. We are now just left to the mercy of these countries for our survival on earth. This helpless condition was exposed on October 17, 2009 before the world people by the cabinet ministry of maldip through holding conference under the sea-water. Besides members of the parliament
This global crisis is known as Global Warming. According to Baranski, global warming “is the current and projected increase in average temperature near the earth’s surface due to increased greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere” in “Climate Change”. Many scientists have preformed studies, and have computer models that project the warming of the earth. These studies how that not only is the earth warming up, but man is causing this trend. Man’s use of fossil fuel in combustion engines in automobiles, heating and cooling of houses, converting coal into energy have all contributed the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This is known as greenhouse gas. The build up of greenhouse gases causes the global warming (Baranski).
Every day when looking out a window, people see a beautiful earth. The earth is intriguing, but hinges on a delicate balance. Many natural resources keep the grass green and the sky blue. Man has made quite an impression on our world, and has transformed the earth's resources into tools to make life easy. However, mans' manipulation on earth has become detrimental to the health of our planet and the safety of mankind. Through the use and production of resources such as oil and energy, man is gradually poisoning the earth. Pollution has become such a dilemma in society; there is no real control or a feasible solution to society's recklessness. Without complete change, our system will collapse. The earth will eventually retaliate with disaster, or corporate control of our economy will cause hysteria and depression. Evaluation of the consequences and repercussion of worldwide pollution, may give people a better idea of what the future holds.
The impact of this global crisis is unprecedented. Vehicular pollution, burning of fossil fuels and human caused hazards like this are depleting our resources. Myths and misconceptions about the earth were unveiled through this section studied. For instance, the bitter truth of animals losing their habitat and forest fires are not just
Climate change is a major problem worldwide, the actions of one country inevitably have an impact on the rest of the world, some places more than others. Consequently, it is vital for the entire world to be on board with efforts to resolve the issues. The main cause of “climate change” is an increase in the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, both naturally occurring and man made, cause the earth’s average temperature to slowly rise. Especially in the past 50 years, the rate of deforestation and the burning of fossil fuels such as gas, oil and coal have significantly increased the amount of greenhouse gases in the earth’s atmosphere (Climate Change and Health). Efforts from a few countries, although beneficial can not fix the problem
Recently, the idea of global warming has been under fire by people who claim it to be a hoax. Even “President-elect Donald Trump said Sunday that “nobody really knows” whether climate change is real” (Eilperin). Even with skepticism, the largest problem facing the world in coming years will undoubtedly be environmental issues. All across the globe, millions of people and thousands of communities feel the effects of global warming and deforestation daily. Whether through a loss of water, rising sea levels, or even a decrease in agriculture, the world is changing and suffering as a result.
As we know, for something to be sustainable it should continue to be so, forever. But, our bubble is burst in worst way possible. Who knew air pollution from factories, building industry, cheap plastics, and energy resources like coal was so bad? The Industrial revolution brought a new hope for people. Humans started thinking they are invincible. But, the scenario is different now. According to Biggers, “Many of the planet’s cities lie along the coasts and are threatened by slowly rising seas. Seventy percent of those cities are already dealing with extreme weather like drought and flooding”(n.d.) We have started to discover many symptoms that earth is really facing all these dangers. Prigg, (2015) says that, scientists have warned that the 6th mass extinction has already begun.” But, some people still feel that there is nothing to fear. Referring to some political leaders who do not feel earth’s weather change reports have any worthy
Due to diverse geo-climatic conditions prevalent in different parts of the globe, different types of natural disasters like floods, droughts, earthquakes, cyclones, landslides, and volcanoes etc may strike according to the vulnerability of the area.
Global Warming is the number one concern threatening the very existence of humans and everything within the environment today. The human race is to blame for the destruction of the natural world. The environmental issues that are threatening all human and non-human life today, started in the industrial revolution and the discovery of oil The need to improve the quality of life resulted in the construction of factories to mass produce products for consumers. These factories were powered by fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas. The combustion of these fossil fuels emitted great quantities of pollutants that remain in the Earths atmosphere to this day and is the number one cause of global warming. However, in ethics one cannot evaluate just one thing. In ethics, as in nature, everything is connected to everything else (Partridge, 1998).
The number of natural disaster is increasing over the years and its impact to the economy and environment has increased remarkably. Flood disaster is a major threat to the environment and is responsible for the economic loss worldwide. Flood frequency, magnitude, extent and cost is accelerating quickly all over the world (Adjei-darko, 2017). A single major flood event can affect several countries simultaneously and can pressure on risk reduction and transfer (Jongman et al., 2014). According to the outcome of Aqueduct Global Flood Risk Analyzer launched by the US-based World Resource Institute (WRI), flooding affects 21 million people annually and it could rise to 54 million by 2030 and the GDP loss is 96 billion $ in each year and it could be 521 billion $ by 2030 (Dutch water sector, 2005). Different sectors of Bangladesh also suffer a huge amount of loss due to regular flood inundation that impacts on countries’ budget through the disruption of economic activity (Hussain & Shan, 2010; Jüssi, 2015). In Bangladesh, about 3.5 million people are annually affected by the flood and it can rise to 9.8 million per year by 2030. Annual GDP loss is 5.5 billion $ and by 2030 it can rise 45.8 billion $ (WRI, 2017). Economic disruption may rise more than 1 trillion $ annually and flood frequency may be double because of adverse climate and socio-economic development by 2050 (Jongman et al., 2014). More than 8 million people affected by flood in 2017 which caused death
We as a society have reached one of the most crucial time periods in the history of our world. Due to the way we have used the resources on this earth we have created a situation in which our climate is drastically changing. The burning of fossil fuels such as coal and oil has caused gases like carbon dioxide to become trapped in the atmosphere causing a natural greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect has caused the earth’s average temperature to rise and has resulted in arctic glaciers melting. These glaciers had gases trapped inside them that are now being released into the atmosphere further raising the earth's temperature. Due to the way we are polluting our air we have caused global warming. This global warming has caused stronger natural disasters such as hurricanes and wildfires putting our society in more danger than ever before.
Nowadays the climate of the Earth is changing rapidly due to the increase of greenhouse gases. 90% of this gases released in environment is due to the human activity by burning of fossil fuels. Due to the climate change the health sector is affected mainly children, adults and whole population. The climate change is danger to the health system, the increase in temperature is causing in heat waves that leads to less rainfall, rise in sea level and flood. Due to this the health of population is affecting by various diseases like respiratory problems, heart diseases, cancer and many more. The world health Organization states that the increase in global warming is due to human activities that changes in climate
There is a serious situation is occurring on planet Earth that is causing a significant and harmful effect on communities, health, and the climate. It is Global Warming which can be defined as the constant heating of Earth 's surface, oceans and atmosphere. In order to understand global warming, the most important basic is to figure out how the of greenhouse effect plays an important part in its development. The greenhouse effect is caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) that trap heat in the atmosphere that keeps the Earth warm. The information this text will discuss is the meaning of global warming, the causes, and most importantly how citizens can help to rectify the situation. Humanity must tickle this problem immediately before the consequences increase and affect the entire planet.
Bangladesh stands among the frontline countries confronted by the impacts of climate change. For several decades we have been experiencing the gradual increase, frequency and erratic pattern of floods, river erosion, cyclones, earthquake murmurs, tidal bores, encroachment of salinity in the low lying coastal
“Human population rise, industrilisation and the increased requirement for natural resources has led to many environmental problems, beside global warming. With reference to specific examples, discuss those environmental problems and their possible solutions.”
Bangladesh is one of the largest deltas in the world which is highly Penetrable to Natural Disasters because of its Geographical location, Flat and low-lying landscape, Poverty, Population density, Illiteracy, Lack of Institutional setup etc. Similarly the Physical, Social as well as Economic states of Bangladesh are very typical to any of the most Penetrable countries to Natural Disasters in the world . The total land area is 147,570 sq. km. consists mostly of Floodplains (almost 80%) leaving major part of the country (with the exception of the north-western highlands) prone to flooding in the rainy season. Moreover, the adverse affects of Climate Change – especially High Temperature, Cyclones and Sea-level Rise, Storm Surges, Salinity Intrusion, Heavy Monsoon Downpours etc. has aggravated the overall Economic Development scenario of the country to a great extent.
